The Journey, Part 2

...two kids became three.....and finally, six. Homeschooling was a big part of the journey during those years, with some classical Christian private school as well. Engineering school skills? Given that my field of study, industrial engineering, was invented largely by the Gilbreths of Cheaper by the Dozen fame, I was a pro at cooking mass quantities, laundering mass quantities, transporting mass quantities.

The homeschooling magazines of those years often had a family pictured on the cover with more children than we had and included an article about how this mom schooled all 13 children with a curriculum she designed from scratch, while grinding her own wheat to bake bread, running a home business, and heading a women's ministry at her church. I never measured up. At this point, enter nervous breakdown. Not being dramatic--being real. Those of you who have had clinical depression understand what I mean; those who haven't, be thankful. I refer to that season of my life as "the abyss" and it is a topic in itself (maybe another time.) For now, just know I had wonderful friends who dragged me to the doctor and helped me through.

Post depression came the liberation of doing what I could, leaving the rest. Success was defined as doing whatever God had for me to do at the moment, no matter if someone else was doing more or doing it better. Each child presented different joys and challenges. As they grew, I took on grad school (online) and some part-time jobs until settling, for now, on tutoring math and science for other homeschool families.

The math was not wasted. The degree was not wasted. No experience was wasted--it just became part of an experiential database I could draw from for the rest of my life.

So go risk something. Do something you've been meaning to do. Say something you've been meaning to say.

It's so easy to judge yourself against others and find yourself wanting. How often would a homeschool magazine actually display the family who is struggling just a bit on the front, even if we all do now and again?
