A Gift Of Japanese Poetry-Themed Rice Crackers!

This morning the postman delivered this beautifully designed gift box of karuta-themed Japanese rice crackers. The rice crackers were sent to me as a "thank-you" for writing a couple of reviews of two "Ogoola Karuta" English Poetry card decks.

Inside the box you can see the rice crackers packaged to look like Japanese poetry cards, or "Karuta."

Karuta is a popular game during the New Year holidays. Players listen to a reader reciting classic Japanese "tanka" poems and they try to be the first person to grab the correct poem.

Here's a video in English about two types of Karuta game:

Aya Hasegawa Feurst, the lady who sent me the rice crackers, created English poetry "karuta" decks inspired by Japanese karuta. Some time ago she sent me sample decks to review. You can check out my reviews on my blog at:

Thanks a lot for this nice post. I will share it with my daughter. She is a Japan fan. She is doing Karate at a high level and she started to take Japanese courses ;-)
