CTP Silence: When Work & (Ahem) "Other Stuff" Gets in the Way...

February marks the end of the academic year in Japan and college lecturers such as myself can look forward to eight to ten weeks free of classes. Woohoo!

Actually, I am a self-employed teacher with several private and community centre classes on my books as well as my college contracts, and those classes continue all the year round.

Even so, I have a nice light teaching schedule from the beginning of February until mid-April. It will give me more time to focus on my online business. At least, that is what I tell myself...

Exam Prep, Syllabus Creation, Grades, and Tax Returns

HOWEVER, before I can look forward to days on end that I can dedicate to my online business, several annoying jobs pop up on the agenda such as exam preparation, syllabus creation, exam grading, and when that is all over it's time to get my tax returns into the local tax office...

Strangely enough, I find doing the tax returns the least tiresome of those tasks. There is quite a big window of time in which you can get them done, and they show me how things went as far as both my teaching business and my online business went the previous year.

All this "stuff" seems to conspire against my pushing forward with my online business. Well, there's almost certainly some self-sabotage in the mix as well...

Take this weekend for example...

This weekend I was knocked out by a triple whammy: Teaching... partying... and grading exams!

Okay, I guess I could've been stricter with myself and come straight back home after my private classes finished on Saturday and worked on my online business...

But heck, I wanted to buy a course book for one of my upcoming college classes, and since that took me into the middle of town, well it was a nice excuse to meet a private student for dinner and a drink or two...

Here's the book I chose for my students! TOEIC is an English exam used to test business-related English skills. One of my classes has a TOEIC exam at the end of the year and their score in that exam will affect their grades.

I met my student in the bookshop. I helped her find a book for her next reading project. Since she's just finished reading a Japanese translation of Dante's Divine Comedy with no prior knowledge or academic background, I suggested she should try Ovid's Metamorphoses (変身物語 in Japanese) to get an insight into classical mythology.

After a shop assistant tracked down the book for us we went out for a celebratory dinner and a few drinks...

The thing is, the Japanese - or the ones I hang out with, anyway, - know how to party...

And no photo is ever left undoctored...

I got back home somewhat the worse for wear at 3:30am.

When I got in, an ominous parcel was waiting for me...

It was from the vocational college where I teach three days a week during term time. Inside the parcel was a bundle of exam papers for me to grade and return on Monday!

So I spent Sunday delicately working my way through a never-ending pile of test papers, fortified by coffee, until I conked out early in the evening. Finished the job this morning... sent the lot back to the college in a pre-paid envelope this afternoon...

Hurrah!

And now, after almost three days, I'm free to start putting the scattered bits of my online business back together again!

The tax returns can wait for a couple of days, so CTP Talk, here I come again!

Okay, enough of the excuses!

Let's see if I can get a chain of blog posts going, one-a-day from now until Easter!

Cheers.
