Be Mindful of the Company You Keep

I would like to start this post with a few questions:

  • Is there anybody in the CTP community who you consider to be successful?
  • Is there anybody in the bigger HIVE community who you consider to be successful?
  • During the time that you have been active on this platform, have you seen anybody who you would say is making progress in terms of growth, development, or any other area?
  • If your answer to one or more of these questions were yes, would you regard such a person as a role model?

Life is About Choices.

Every day of our lives, we have to make choices. And the company we keep is one of the most important choices we can ever make.

I recall attending a public meeting some time ago. The speaker told us about an incident where a mother received the horrifying news that her teenage son was a passenger in a vehicle that was involved in a serious collision. They were five youngsters in the car. The driver was under the influence of alcohol and some drugs were found in the vehicle too.

The mother was beyond herself with shock and didn't want to accept that her son was in that vehicle. She didn't want to believe that he would ever be involved with any drug-and-alcohol abuse.

Then the speaker followed up by telling us that he could actually predict your future. What? He had us all thinking for a few moments...and then followed up by saying "show me your friends...the people you hang out with...and I'll tell you where you will end up five years from now."

What he wanted to get across to us, is that the people you keep company with, have a major impact on your life. You eventually become like them. That is exactly why you hear it often when successful people would give the advice that "if you want to become successful, surround yourself with successful people".

So, look at those questions again at the beginning of this post and I'm sure you will start seeing how that exact same principle is playing out right in front of your eyes, right here on this platform.

Having a Role Model and Being a Role Model

In your journey towards success, it is good to have a role model. But, be determined to remain yourself and don't sacrifice your own personality in the process.

Study that person and duplicate/copy what he or she does as good as you can. That is good. But don't become a second Robert Kiyosaki or Arnold Schwarzenegger. That is being a fake.

On the other hand, remember that all of us are role models, whether we know it or not. You might think you are still a mister or miss nobody, but somewhere...when and where you least expect it...someone is watching you.

It might be your little three-year-old at home, it might be a little sister or brother, but believe me, someone is watching you. And to that person, you're a hero.

So, take pride in what you do and in who you are, you never know who is watching.

And being part of the CTP tribe, we are in a good place. If you want to predict how I will turn out 5 years from now, based on the company I keep here, I have a very positive feeling!

Awesome post, @jacoalberts! As you said it's a great thing to have role models to follow and to be surrounded by awesome people... The great ideas tend to spill over from them to others, and if you are closer, you can catch some... :)

On the other side, I have never thought to be someone's role model... But, you are right, someone is watching us, as we are watching some other people...

I have a couple of people here that create awesome stuff, trying to push them up as they are serving great ideas, and they are not even aware of that...

Hi @ph1102, thank you for your valuable input. It is much appreciated.

You are indeed a role model on this platform, my friend. I can tell you this without any doubt just by looking at many of the comments below the posts. People often refer to what you have said. And, in my opinion, that means only one thing...people are watching you. So do I.

Keep up the good work, we appreciate you.

Thank you for your kind words! As I said, you are doing great and keep on creating... I know that it is hard on the beginning when you aren't receiving as many upvotes as your content is worth... but, it will come...

I like to read your stuff, and I'm sure that you will have more and more readers through time... ;)

This is very well written and I totally agree with you. I believe that the CTP tribe is amazing in this respect. I started on Steem/Hive well before I discovered CTP. Since I'm closer to CTP now, I really appreciate the atmosphere here. People help each other to progress on their journey, we rejoice when somebody succeeds and it encourages us to follow them. There are nice role models who show their way with their dedication and enthusiams and their human qualities. I'm quite sure that in 5 years you will develop well in this environment ;-)
