The One Thing You Cannot Afford To Neglect

I got inspired to write this post after reading a post about 44 years of bad decisions by @jongolson.

As I read his post and some of the comments as well, it served as a great wake-up call to me. Not only a wake-up call but also confirmation of the decision I took recently. I am getting frustrated with physically being passive and decided it's time to get active again, working my way back into a healthy training routine. And reading that post makes me even more determined to get back on track and get active again.

As a general rule, I kind of avoid talking about myself too much...but I have heard many times here that people actually want to know more about you, who you are, and what makes you "tick". So, here goes...

As already mentioned, reading Jon's post about the shocking news he received and the way he handles it, I thought maybe I can share how that serves as a wake-up call for me.

After leaving school I started my career in the police force. Shortly after completing my basic training, I joined the Reaction Unit in the South African Police, which specializes in combating urban terrorism. In total, I spent about 4-years in the police force. I then started a full-time career as a martial arts instructor until the age of 40. I enjoyed many highlights through those years.

But, I started having some problems with old injuries and my wife insisted on me getting a "normal job"...lol. It was a very difficult adjustment to make and a bit of a roller-coaster ride for me. However, I made it work but down the line, the economy had other ideas and I got laid off.

So, about 12 years ago I also started working from home, doing anything I could lay my hands on. But, especially the last 3 to 4 years became very passive mainly working in a sitting position in front of the computer. I found it very frustrating but I felt desperate to put everything into my work and make it work. I was almost as if I felt "guilty" if I took time off for a good workout...while I should be "working".

But now, after only 4 years of being passive, I am already starting to pay the price. While training all those years, my core remained strong enough to support my lower back. But now, due to an old sports injury in my back and being passive (mainly in a sitting position), I am starting to experience sciatic nerve problems.

It became painful and a mission to get up. Walking was getting more and more difficult and painful too.

I am 60 now and way too young to give in to this kind of problem. I am definitely not ready to hang up the gloves where it concerns my health and living a good quality life.

I went to see a biokineticist and it was found that the muscles in my lower back, my right hip, and upper leg contracted into a spasm, pinching the nerve without releasing it.

I had to go for physiotherapy to get the muscles to release.

I still have discomfort in my back, but I am seeing the biokineticist again tomorrow. We will work out a light rehabilitation training program to start strengthening the core again.

I wouldn't say I have a serious weight problem yet, but I am definitely also not comfortable with my current weight.

As soon as my back is sorted out, I will start working my way back to a nice healthy workout routine again. As the physiotherapist said, "just be patient and we'll get you fit for life again".

So, after reading Jon's post about the health complications after 20 years, I think that is a good wake-up call for me to get back in shape and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
