Our first (kids') birthday party in Mexico

avatar

A few weeks ago, we visited old neighbours and friends for my son's best friend's birthday party at the old neighbourhood where we used to live.

It's really the first Mexican party we've attended since we've moved to Mexico so it was extra special. Of course, there were a lot of kids and their parents.

The party was supposed to start at 12.30 pm, but we got there fashionably late - Mexican style - at 1 pm. We weren't the first ones there but neither the last haha.

There's really no better setting for a kids' birthday party than the pool in front of the house!

The Day

My daughter and I had been due a haircut for months, so we dropped the little one and walked to our favourite hair salon. The place has one barber salon and a nail- and hair salon next door. With 120 pesos (about US $6.00) you really can't go wrong there. I've always had issues trying to get hairdressers in the Netherlands or Ireland to cut my hair the way I wanted it, even when speaking the same language. Here, I just let them do their thing and it always turns out great. These ladies are true masters at their art!

We were done and on our way back to the party in no time.
Meanwhile more guests and kids had arrived, and pretty much all the kiddos were in the pool. Except for my son, who thought that the pool was too 'pink' for his liking with only girls haha so he chilled in the hammock.

But it wasn't long till Mr. mini-me felt a bit peckish and needed a snack...

My friend and another old neighbour had spotted me at the pool so she came to say hello. She and her partner Miguel were swiftly invited (Mexican hospitality is really like no other) to the party as well. It wasn't long before the mezcal-like liquor from Central Mexico came out.

I was offered it but thought that 3 pm was not the right time to start that kind of lunch hehe.
Later in the day, I had about a quarter of a shot glass of it, and trust me, for a lightweight like me: it was enough. Some people that know me from the past Steemfests would disagree but I am not telling any lies when I say that I drink once a year, so only during the fests, and that means it's almost 3 years ago...with the exception of Anarchapulco but that was in February, so too long ago to be 'used' to it haha.
Here's a picture of the bottle because I know you want to see it :) Note the 70% on the label...So you probably understand why 1/4 of a shot was more than enough for me...

After the kids were done playing in and around the pool, and they'd filled their bellies with snacks and mini sandwiches, the piñata came out and the kids were first twirled around for a few seconds before they could hit the piñata.
As you can see, my son was quite determined.
It is a serious job after all!

And last but not least...of course we all sang for the birthday girl. Well, not all because us dumb English/Dutch speakers don't know the Mexican Spanish birthday song...
We'll have to learn it now.

You saw the cake. This is my son and his bestie Renata. She's like the female version of him. Really. When they first met, her English consisted of only a few words, which she'd use with my son often: "Hey, come!" and "Let's Go!"
My son was the same, and still babbled away in English. Now both their vocabularies have improved a bit but Renata's the most. SO CUTE!

The End

Nope. It's not the end. Haha. Well, around 6-7 pm it was the official end of the kids' party. But that was when the adult party started. I ended up hanging out with Renata's dad, some of his friends, and Connie & Miguel, while the kiddos were still running around for a bit.
Around 11 pm, the security guard felt that the party should truly come to an end but I believe they bribed him into letting us stay at the pool a bit longer as long as we were quiet. We all started to feel a bit hungry, so we ordered some of the best tacos in Playa, according to Kiki (Renata's dad). He wasn't lying. They were. Or maybe it was the fact that anything tastes great if you're hungry enough. But I really think they were. I'd have to test it again to be sure...
Miguel ordered a taxi for us and we finally went home after a great day out.

Mexican hospitality is amazing, it's like you're family even if they've never even met you. Cool theme party, my youngest loves Turning Red. I've never seen that 70% booze before, but damn, that'll get ya goin' in a hurry! Late night tacos are the best! Looks like everyone had a great time.

Yes, Mexican hospitality is the best! I love everything about it here. Yeah, I liked the theme. The dad made the cake himself, aside from the cookies on top. He's got talent because it tasted amazing. Maybe a bit too much colouring for my liking but it was a hit with the kiddos.

And those tacos! Everyone tells me that the food in Playa del Carmen isn't the greatest and most other parts of Mexico have much better food. I believe it because here, it's adapted to tourists. But every once in a while you'll find this local gem. We're lucky in that regard, because we live among nothing but locals so we enjoy local prices, and food made for locals. Completely different from the more touristy places.

Everyone had an amazing time, and what I love the most about it is that it wasn't about how many presents the birthday girl got, but about who was there. As it should be.

Thanks for stopping by!

That looks like fun! And the cake looks amazing. I am sure the rest of the food and stuff was great too. That's a long day for a kids' birthday party.

That's so cool. I've yet to be invited to a Mexican birthday party, but I've heard all about Mexican hospitality! 😍
