Short and Sweet - 80 Years and still going strong

Hi Folks

I was in a thrift shop the other day, one of my favourites because it has a section of old books.

One caught my eye, it is a textbook from the Alexander Howard Institute of Modern Business
The book was published in 1941, so not really that old, but old enough.

The book is part of a series of Texts for the Modern Business course and is on Advertising Principles.

Written by Hugh E Agnew and George Burton Hotchkiss.

This book was written in an exciting time for Advertising when the notion of customer manipulation was really taking off in Advertising , all stemming from the major forms of propaganda borne during the 2nd world war. A lot of Advertising Principles were learnt from political propaganda of the time and are still applied in today’s world.

This book is absolutely fascinating, in terms of writing style but also to see how some of the very basic principles are what we here being spouted every day in our current contemporary approaches.

For instance:
“ If it is an action advertisement of the conventional form the copy writer will probably arrange the material in the order of the Sales Process

  1. Getting Attention and Interest
  2. Arousing Desire
  3. Convincing
  4. Stimulating Action
    (Direct Quote- Page 199)

Sound familiar?? Well it should 😊

A good Lead capture page does exactly that as written above.

This is not news to me, (I had my first taste of the Advertising industry 45 years ago) that we have been using basic principles of Advertising for the last 80 years. But it may be news to some.

The information, hints tips and tricks that we write about to aid and assist Affiliate marketers today, are not new fangled ways of doing things, they are steeped in traditional processes and the fact that they are still around today demonstrates how effective they are and why we still use these methodologies when promoting business and products in this contemporary Internet based world.

So, we are using WWII tactics in creating LCP?

The advertising tools are changing through time, but the principles are still the same... ;)

Lol, we ceratinly are - :) and yes we have quicker ways of doing things through technology and now everyone can do it, back then only the copy writer wrote the ads for companies. a highly specialised job that not everyone wanted to do.
copy writers are still important but now we are all encouraged to give it a go
