Short and Sweet - Psychology of Colour Series - Orange

newshead.png
Hi Folks

When we use Orange in our promotions it can often generate a Freshness, an energy that signifies morning, a new start, and freedom

There is some research that shows we react to orange with a positive stimulus, it actually increases oxygen supply to the brain.

It also speeds things up, eg Mcdonalds have chosen their particular shade of Orange because it stimulates but also speeds up and that not only makes people want to sit in their restaurants but also moves them in and out very quickly.

Maccas spent millions researching their colour schemes to have just that effect. They want high turnover and they have chosen a colour that will create that.

However, Orange also has a concept of warning and hesitance, think of the Orange light on a traffic signal. It is the no man’s land of shall I or shan’t I.

Will I or Wont I. There is a cultural ingrained notion in this context that one must stop at Orange unless safe to do so. This does not necessarily breed positive moving forwards.

Orange is a colour used for Prisoners in certain countries, this in itself implies a fear and caution in people

As with all colours there are many factors to take into account such as cultural learned conditions. And Demographic conditions
EG; I grew up in the era when the Orange People with Rashneesh was a thing, and although this depicted a spiritual awareness it also depicted cult.

The Theravada Buddhists of South East Asia wear orange, again, recognised as a symbol of spirituality, however they wear orange because it was the only dye available at the time and has now become a symbol of detachment of materialism.

There are many different implied meanings against a colour, however many of them are post thought meanings and representations. That does not however diminish the impact that a colour may have based on the constructed implied meanings.

Colour is a very powerful representation and can conjure all types of feeling and emotions in people.

When colour is combined then you can create very powerful messages.

I will always urge people to experiment with colour and allow themselves to react with emotion, feeling, memory and what ever other senses get triggered.

These personal reflections will help you when it comes time to use colour n your promotions. It will inform you as to the type of journey that you can takes other on.

Be Bold and Be Brave above all else be innovative, creative and experimental.
