Taken Hostage

She heard a noise across the room only to look up in time to see three masked men bursting through the door armed with bats and machetes. After shoving a young girl to the floor that impeded their entry, they grabbed the other adult woman and made death threats if they encountered any resistance. The robbers held the two adults and seven children at bay for more than two hours while they ransacked the house and took everything they thought had any value. Thankfully, after collecting their booty, they left without seriously hurting any of the inhabitants of the house. This happened to my daughter in Honduras during the Summer of 2019.

While they may not be as grisly as this, we all have our own hostage type situations that have pushed us to be who we are today. It could be a divorce. It could be a sick loved one. It could be a lost job or any number of other traumatic circumstances. While initially these situations can be quite dramatic, they can actually be a gift.

These situations can be a trigger for us and push us to consider that there is more to life. These life altering occurrences don't necessarily happen to redirect us. Rather, they may have happened to ensure we stay on track for what we are meant to be doing. These hostage crises enable us to gain perspective. Whether due to a story like the one you read at the beginning of this post or based on our own experience, we need to learn that life is too short to just be living in a way that doesn't bring us joy.

What is most important to you? What brings you joy? What do you want to do with your life? Do it NOW! You never know what could happen. There is no promise of tomorrow. We only have this moment. Don't remain hostage to the things that have been holding you back.

That's awful what happened to your daughter... :( I hope that she is doing fine and living her life without thinking of that accident... I can't even imagine how emotional scars has made that to her and her family...

Living in a present is one of the most important things that we should practice... Living in a past, overwhelmed by bad (or good) things can be just a weight, and waiting for something in the future is even worse...

Thanks for sharing your story!

There are still some things that bring her back to that moment (like seeing people in masks for COVID for the first time), but for the most part she has been able to deal with it and move on. At the time, she was helping out a family there acting as a house mom (generally helping to care for all the children while most of the other adults in the group home were out of the country). She returned to the States shortly thereafter and has been living at home since then. She is strong in her faith and actually interns with a counseling ministry, so she has been able to talk with some of her counterparts about her ordeal to help her deal with it. Thank you for your concern.
