The Best Blog Topic

If you are reading this, there is a good possibility that you are on the blockchain trying to monetize your content creation. For many folks, especially those that are just starting out, that tends to be harder than you originally thought. In order to generate a following, and in the process an ongoing income, you have to be consistently posting new stuff. Due to time constraints, interest, or a host of other reasons, some people want to post more frequently that others. The challenge comes in when you have to find a new topic to write about each time. For each person, the path to new content will start and proceed in different directions (possibly more than one). The purpose of this post is the share my experience in the area of content creation and do my best to answer the question, "What is the best topic to blog about?" Personally, when I sit down to write a blog post, I have two topics that I generally turn to. I will cover each one here and then share what I think is the best topic for blog posting.

The first topic I go to in order to create a new post is talking about something I want to teach others. Whether this means telling about what I have learned (like this post) or teaching how to complete a specific task (step-by-step instructions), when I pass along what I have learned, I find I receive a certain satisfaction of accomplishment. This becomes particularly beneficial when you receive feedback in the form of questions. These questions can help you learn more about your followers and their interests, broaden the scope of your teaching, and create opportunities for you to increase your understanding of the topic by requiring you to do some research in order to answer the questions. I also think this is an excellent avenue of providing value (one of the cornerstones of building a following). By teaching others what you know, you are building their confidence in your expertise and your willingness to share information. Finally, teaching others without compensation leads directly into the Reciprocity Principle (people tend to pay back what they receive from others).

The other topic I generally utilize in order to create a post is something that I am passionate about. When you talk about something you love, it is seldom difficult to come up with dialogue. I know when I talk about family history, I can go on for days about different aspects and tactics I use to capture information I find important that I want to share with my loved ones. I am also interested in hearing other people tell about their experiences and share what they have learned about their ancestors. That is why I created the Family History Community. I have other passions, as well, but this is the one that I am looking to monetize and see if I can build a business around, so this is the one I blog about (using my @familyhistory account).

So, I have given you the two topics I mostly choose to focus on when I create a blog post. But that wasn't the main point of this post. If you have read this far, you are wanting to know the BEST topic for you to use when you create a new post. Well, actually, it's a trick question. I think the best topic to use when you create a new post is the one that uses both of these techniques...teach something you are passionate about. Not only do you get to share your knowledge on a topic in which you feel you have something to share, but it is a topic you love (which makes it not a chore, but a joy).

So, what topics do you know enough about to teach others? {NOTE: If you would like a bit more information about teaching others in your posts, you can check out THIS VIDEO.} What topics are you passionate about? Most importantly, what can you teach others about in the topic you love?

Thank you for your response. Do you have a topic (or two) that you like to fall back on when you are putting together a post?

I agree that choosing a topic for a blog post can be a tough thing... If I look back a year ago, I had a really hard time finding topics for my blog posts... I thought that I have nothing valuable to say to contribute to others...

As you said, to teach someone something... But, I was probably wrong... It was just a normal insecure feeling that everyone has when comes to "unknown" surroundings... As time was passing by, I have found it much easier to pick a topic... Especially when I started to "consume" others' content and making my personal opinion, or "twist" about some topic...

I found that that kind of content can be valuable for me (as I have learned something new), but also for my reader/viewer as they got a different view to their topic... So, in that way, both parties got value, which is the whole point...

Your both ways of finding a blog topic are great, as teaching someone about the things that you are passionate about is probably the most valued content... as it comes directly from your heart and soul, and you are putting out "real yourself"... and that can be very powerful!

Thanks for an awesome post!

Excellent point about providing your own viewpoint on a topic you heard from someone else. I do find myself thinking about the content I consume and formulating how I could present it to others. As a matter of fact, a good bit of this post originated from a reply I made to someone else's post last week. While I was teaching in my original response, I felt more people would see it and benefit if I created a post of my own. Thank you for your feedback.

I felt more people would see it and benefit if I created a post of my own.

that is a valid point, as not so many people are reading "past" comments... It's always a good move to create a post and elaborate more your comment...

This is so true, I remember when I got started here and they were telling me to create content daily. I was like, what do I use for the subjects of all this content? It took me a while and I still need to work on it for sure but I see things so much different now then back then. Teaching or helping people with good content is the prefect way to focus your content so your readers don't feel like they are being pitched to and are more likely to buy from you.

I think your story rings true with most. With consistency comes not only improved visibility, but also confidence, experience, and improved engagement. Keep on keeping on.

I really like this post because it applies to both blogs & vlogs alike. As you may know, creating video content is my niche & the same things happen with deciding what to talk about. Sometimes, the creativity flows & I know exactly what I want to talk about. Other times, it is more of a challenge.

As you mentioned, talking about something you're passionate about while giving the viewer VALUE is a winning combination. I know when I am doing this, I am more of in a flow state & really feel good about helping the people watching my content. I always want them to be able to walk away from feeling they gained something, whether it's more knowledge, comfort or even a laugh.

Now that I have been doing videos for a few years, I noticed that when I think of an idea that I feel might not be trivial often is not. I will allow myself to vlog about it & surprisingly, that's when my audience seem to relate the most. It's an interesting paradigm.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge & I look forward to more awesome content! :)

I like your perspective on relating an idea that might not be trivial to you. I guess if it is something you feel strongly about, it is more than likely to be relatable for others, as well. I sometimes have ideas come to me like that, but occasionally I am not is a position to act upon it right away (and it escapes before I can capture it in words). I guess I need to be more diligent about making notes when ideas bubble to the surface so I can go back and address the issue when I do have the time.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and provide valuable feedback.

I have been doing a lot of genealogy, searching for my ancestors. So I guess we have similar interests there.
Congrats on the feature by @russellstockley.

My Ancestors is mostly from Norway & Finland, but I have a few that went to US and settled.
We will see I might post some there over time.

My observation is that posting about something you experienced or observed makes great post, Experience sharing is also a good start .

That is why I created the Family History Community.

That nice that you created a community for this so that all content get a branding on that community and great way to unite with like mindd.

I agree finding a topic to write about can be difficult. Like my passion is in my gardening and phytotherapy. Phytotherapy is the study of herbs and extracts for medicinal and wellness. But I am also a techy and love the fact I have my online work, just haven't found a way to merge the two.

Also I love to teach what I know to people and help them out.

So yeah I could come up with a well of information but I am so holding back until I find the right community. So though I am thinking about making my own.

Be brave, Bonnie. Blaze a new trail by creating your own community (like I did with the Family History Community).

This is very good advice you have here. I have no strategy when it comes to making a post, maybe that's why it's still a little difficult for me. However, most recently things are coming to me from many aspects of my life and that is where my thoughts mostly lie right now. I do hope that my post will interest others as well as be of some value to them.

Thanks for reading this post. I have noticed that as I have begin reading posts from various other people, I have become more sensitive to topics that might lead to beneficial content. The more you post, the easier it will become and the better you will be at selecting content that others will find useful. Keep on keeping on.

Ahh you've touched on a very important aspect of content creation -- topic. I do find it challenging to come up with it on a daily basis. Thankfully, each day brings a new beginning and a new inspiration. Have a great week ahead! 😉👍🏼
