Hive mask

I was wondering why I'm not seeing people raving about how many new users are joining Hive while also plastering the same style of graph in their posts. It's probably because the number of new accounts created have dropped significantly since the glory days of summer when people were making accounts just to play Splinterlands. Checking out the latest post from penguinpablo was a bit unsettling to see just how much the new account creation has slowed down. A small little rant about finding stuff on hive, it was a bit annoying not being able to find penguinpablo's account using the usual Hive front ends and having to resort to duck duck go ( only using google if absolutely necessary ), instead the search kept sending me to some ghost accounts with similar names. People that compare Hive to Reddit clearly haven't tried to find something specific on Hive, at least on Reddit you are able to find stuff, even if I don't like the platform. Good luck finding some random post a few years old on Hive, either there is some super obvious method to do it and I'm retarded ( always a possibility ) or it's a freaking challenge in of itself. Ok, little rant over.

I'm happy to see new faces in the comment sections trying to hang out, but these are not the numbers I expected in a bull market, or at least when prices are decent. Yes the numbers of comments have been consistently growing since the summer but I think it's to be expected the trend to go down in the bear market because shitty prices. And we're not talking insane numbers just a few thousands plus comments per day since the summer. The thing is social media lives and dies by the number and activity of their users. Sure it's nice to have games and stuff on the blockchain but they also have a life cycle and it seems like the Splinterlands hype has run it's course when it comes to drawing in new users and we can't expect a game to still be popular in 5 or 10 years time. Sure there are examples of good games still having a decent fanbase for longer than that but those are not the rule. People get bored, and move on I guess.

The age old question of user retention and getting new people onboard remain, Hive is still a hard place to get a foothold even if you're determined to make it, and that's not a commitment many are willing to make nowadays. The good thing is that most of the OGs will still be around no matter what happens so at least I'll have somebody to share my shitposts with :P

I think the best way to promote HIVE is to sell the platform to groups of people. Imagine this set up: an established user gets a group of people to join. The experienced user helps the newbies, in a round robin style, to take pictures and set up their first post.

The newbies all vote on each other's posts; so that they get rewards for their first post.

After a few weeks, the new user goes on to the next location.

I've actually thought about playing the game where I hold classes on using HIVE and then help people set up their accounts.

I used to teach introduction to computer classes where we trained people to get those stupid Microsoft Certifications. It was a lot of fun.

I stopped because Microsoft was ripping off the students. It would be a hoot to teach classes on HIVE. HIVE doesn't rip people off.

Unfortunately, while I do a good job teaching. I am completely incapable of selling things. I am so bad at sales that I couldn't even sell free money. But it would be a hoot to hold HIVE classes.

I also try to promote hive on noise cash for example but success has been limited

the only reason i'm here is noise.cash shilling, lol, but it was kind of painful getting used to the flow of things here. Hive is not intuitive, unfortunately.

Lol. Its as if Hive doesnt have a uniform sign up process, none of the frontends have ever attempted to develop a content placement algo, not a single front end focuses on new user experience over the experience 4-5 whales have.
Not a single front end developed a way to simplify initial user experience.
Not a single front end looks to tackle a niche, not a single front end attempts to solve a problem beyond what the base chain does. Not a single frontend has any ambition beyond the basic of satisfying the current Hive community.
And 2 out 3 biggest front ends right now DONT EVEN HAVE ANY DAMN ACCOUNTS AVAILABLE FOR NEW USERS!

Youre not seeing people raving? Lol. Using Hive was stupidly complex for new users. Now most cant even sign up to Hive.

just saying I'm not seeing the mass of newbies that are to be expected when prices are good and finding stuff on chain is a pain, simple as that :) no need for knickers twisting :P

You need effective ways for new users to try out Hive. We dont have that which is why youre not seeing many new people here.

Ive been begging frontend devs for years to work on it, develop a guest account system, trial accounts, custodial accounts, anything.
Now you dont even have free accounts available on 50% of the frontends. If you want to make a free account it takes you on a link click journey through hive.io, hiveonboard, back to hive.io, then forward till you find one option that works.
On that journey you lose 99% of potential users. Ive been explaining that to everyone and no one gives a shit.
No one understands or wants to understand how fragile "potential user interest" is.

If more people made that clear in posts it would really help change the development direction.

You mean: Look at all development we have on hive + the community. So many people just don't get it and we are better off with everybody who has left staying away from the platform!

It would be nice to be able to transfer account creation tokens to frontend apps to help.

I have to agree with most of what you said except for the part of splinterland. The hype did die down but I think it will return when they finally drop lands and start making a bigger effort on marketing, especially if we see SPS on Binance. As an added benefit seeing the token higher on Coinmarketcap will also help a lot.

Unfortunately for Hive it is indeed very difficult to retain the masses. People expect to get rich in a week and when they see it takes a lot of effort to make a decent profit with it they bounce.

I think Splinterlands has already helped Hive a lot as it is, I just pointed out games don't remain popular forever, people simply move on

Hive is one of the few platforms where the insiders are driving real accounts away and replacing them with contractors and AI accounts.

Dont respond to this, all my friends on hive are now being put on the spaminator downvote list...

So much potential with hive concept, shame the way the make things hard when it could be easy for it to grow.

Geez, I thought I lived dangerously.
In the longest run, decreasing adoption works out better for the rich, they share less of the inflation with the unwashed.

Have you tried peakd's search?
It does pretty well, just be sure to scroll down to see all the results.

LoL "controversial"

I think grumbling about how things are "going wrong" has been the most common post on the platform since 2016.

lol nah. If you want a lot of engagement, complain.

We've all had our moments.

Probably does nothing to boost morale or keep people around but it's easier to blame the platform since it can't really defend itself.

Hooray

You're around. Hello. Happy to see you and ...

Well. I'm busy making new content so no time for bitchin' right now.

I'd say though:

  1. On sign up it says "support creators" under post comments if you're not logged in / signed up

Let's face it... Most humans aren't Iike the clearly actually decent humans who developed PeakD. Fact. Most humans will run a fuckin' mile if they're asked to support anyone but themselves. The nature of the beast.

And the shirty programming of capitalism. Competitivess. See?

The developers may wanna change the call to action to something that still lives with shit head Capitalist selfishness and greed.

Use it to get them on board. Make them hungry for it. Sell them the money. 🤑 But still ... ya gotta give them what they want.

Get them signed up and they will Defrag and reboot in a couple of months. And start being decent again when they're recovered from mainstream a bit. Because it is actually so bad out there it's traumatizing people.

And a lack of trust is a primary symptom of trauma btw. So they're not gonna trust this off the bat. Especially with the way crypto has been presented to them because... well let's face it... the powers that be have done a sterling smear campaign right there.

But they may only stick around if whoever signed them up gives them a bit of HP to get going. Suggested in the referral info. Which is smart. And fair. 👍👍👍

But humans and greed. Again.

The sign up process could be made less intimidating as well. It scares the shit out of folks who aren't au fait with tech.

Who cares. I'm sticking around. Have fun. Thrive. Be happy and people will follow. Always.

That's how ya start a party.

You're my first chat on PeakD amd I still think about you every week.

Glad you're still around 🌻🦊

As my granny would say, "Every day in every way I'm getting better and better."

Finding Hive has rally shifted my whole world and given me a great deal of joy back. So I'm really good, even if things are still pretty unsettled out here. 👍

I think just finding more people with a similar perspective has given me some hope again :)

You'll catch up for sure. Glad you're well and around again for sure. You have a sound energy about you. It feels good 👍

I feel at home when I'm here. Just have to make damn sure I avoid drama. Can't bite my tongue and often bad attitudes set me off. It already happened LOL! Then I feel shitty... Was dealing with some shit here before I left for the summer as well that really burned me out. Gotta keep that energy and those vibes on the positive side. Hopefully get into entertainment mode again, leave all the nonsense behind where it belongs.

Hmmmmm... I was gonna add you still feel a bit "worn" btw.

I think it's people and politics that wears a person down.

Thing is... sometimes we have to fight. Or the "bad guys" (not so great motivation) "wins". And yeah - it sucks and some of us aren't born fighters and it makes us ill.

I've learned to choose my battles more carefully and to pace myself these days.

It helps to know you're not alone and others are fighting the good fight too. Maybe just hang with those folks for a while and reboot in full?

As for drama... I'm living next door to Drama Street right this minute and it made me grin when I moved here. That used to be my street! Now I choose to not react anymore if possible... the end.

One can still step up for what we believe is right, but not allow things to affect us. But this is why I liked you immediately btw... I asked some awkward questions and you took the time to respond calmly and helpfully. It could have gone the other way but you didn't.

You're mature. and reasonable. And actually very patient believe it or not. And we all react badly sometimes when we're fucking tired of things. And we're all allowed to feel that too at times.

Take it easy on yourself please :)

You're worth it.

I can tell

Also... more unsolicited advice (because I care) - don't return unless you're ready to. Take your time. The internet isn't going anywhere. And neither will the folks who really are "your people".
