Tales of the Urban Explorer: Hill View

Hill View was one of those, 'STOP!!, Broken Windows' opportunities spotted by the ever eagle-eyed @dizzydiscovery.

This is to say that it was not on our schedule and was spotted driving through a very rural area of a non-disclosed location.

20_IMG_4370_20.jpg

I don’t believe it’s ever been posted on the internet’s Urban Exploration forums far and wide, but that doesn’t make it necessarily exciting.

What’s inside is what makes it interesting... or not.

As there were a couple of large detached and occupied houses almost facing 'Hill View', we parked up around 200 yards away and walked nonchalantly up to the property, which was not boarded up or difficult to access.

17_IMG_4367_17.jpg

First impressions were, 'what the fuck has happened here?'. Have some dickheads come along and thrown a few bricks through the front window?

19_IMG_4369_19.jpg

The tire hanging from a nearby tree told me that kids used to live here.

Getting in was as easy as walking through the door on the side that was wide open.

1_IMG_4350_1.jpg

What a mess inside. Is this due to it being empty for too long or have the vandals hit?

I figure they have as it wouldn’t be in this state otherwise.

6_IMG_4355_6.jpg

…'someone seems to have tugged at this fireplace until it was forcibly pulled away'…

This is what we called a dormer bungalow in the UK. That is a single room upstairs but most of the living quarters are based on the ground floor.

2_IMG_4351_2.jpg

In one room I spotted a bunch of mail, but it was not stacked at the back of the door. Someone has moved it at some point in time.

5_IMG_4354_5.jpg

12_IMG_4362_12.jpg

I did get a name from the correspondence but other than that, it was mostly junk mail or unpaid bill demands.

7_IMG_4356_7.jpg

The front window was missing many panes. Someone has been having a ‘smashing time’ here. Why didn’t those neighbours hear all the noise?

4_IMG_4353_4.jpg

8_IMG_4357_8.jpg

We made our way to the upper storey avoiding quite a large puddle of water on the way.

11_IMG_4361_11.jpg

Is that the old handrail for the stairs?

9_IMG_4358_9.jpg

A nice large bedroom awaited us, with little damage. Across the hall was a different story.

3_IMG_4352_3.jpg

10_IMG_4359_10.jpg

Was this ever used as a room or just loft space with the boiler in one corner? If this isn’t dealt with quickly the house won’t last long which is a real shame.

13_IMG_4363_13.jpg

I guess the vandals missed this light fitting.

Not so exciting inside. I guess the house was up for sale and not sold for several years.

16_IMG_4366_16.jpg

We exited and had a look around the exterior. No doubt now that the last residents had kids.

15_IMG_4365_15.jpg

They had their gas supplied by a tank; that is unusual.

I took some time to look up this house and found some information. It was sold for £340,000 in 2007 and from what I can gather has been empty since 2015.

The location is so rural that it's surrounded by fields but only 15 minutes to a mid-sized city.

14_IMG_4364_14.jpg

How much would it be valued at now,? Nothing like the selling price of 13 years ago I would bet.

£340k back then! Seems expensive for what it is. Did it come with much land? Not as trashed as some you have visited. At least nobody has set it on fire yet.

It has a decent sized garden all around, but the location is fantastic. Barely any houses about besides a couple across the road and they are not directly in view.

The property is very small for that amount, and that was before the global recession hit. It may be listed for a similar amount now... that is if it wasn't trashed.

Wow, that is quite the chandelier! It is funny how much more I notice these places now when I am out and about. I was driving by something the other day and I thought to myself ooh, that would be a good UrbEx place. If it was over there of course. We have already discussed at length why it would be a bad idea to do it over here.

It is truly a shame you can't do them over there without getting shot or knifed. I would feel the same, it's not like I am braver than you.

(Edited)

I bet that was a real pretty place at one time. Such a shame for all those stained glass windows to go to waste.

Yes, it would make a great home for a small family. I guess it was overvalued and this is the reason it has stood so long... unloved.

WOW! Nearly 350K. That sounds like one of those schemes used before the bottom fell out in 2007-08.

It's expensive for the north, but the location is exquisite. You pay a lot here for no or very few neighbours.

Nice house in so good place, it's sad to see it so desolate.

You can find farmhouses around E Washington all the time. The farmer moves to town and sells (tries to sell) a few acres and the house.

Like I said there are a lot eligible for RUEX :)

That looks like the kind of place that I'd love to live. Thanks for sharing it.

It is very sad to see empty houses. Only a few years without a roof, and the house is easier to tear down and build anew than to repair.
