Tales of the Urban Explorer: Thornseat Lodge

Almost TWO years later I found myself back at Thornseat Lodge, one of the first explores I ever did.

That time I got spooked by some camera’s and loudspeakers and ran away screaming like a big girl with my hands waving in the air.

24_IMG_5613_24.jpg

Knowing the same security system was still in place (and to blatantly ignore it this time), we parked in the same spot as last time which categorically says ‘someone’s in there’.

I don’t generally do this but I also don’t want to walk the best part of a mile, as Thornseat Lodge is situated in the back of beyond on a very narrow road.

1_IMG_5590_1.jpg

...'it was going to be a long day, the less walking the better'...

The gate looked a little easier than last time, though it was hardly a challenge then. Just be careful the barbed wire does not remove your manhood.

2_IMG_5591_2.jpg

Like last time I knew the cameras were stuck up near the trees so we made our way through all the brush and ferns, which were much deeper than last time. It was hard walking.

23_IMG_5612_23.jpg

…'talk about deep ferns, these things come up to your bloody knees and you think you're sinking into the earth'…

The Lodge loomed and like last time I figured the brickwork looked far too modern for a 19th-century building. Surely they are not sandblasting a building that is falling to bits?

Built around 1852 and closed since the 1980’s it was previously used as a children’s home for the more 'difficult types'.

3_IMG_5592_3.jpg

I can only guess what went on in here, seeing all the reports of these types of buildings in the last few years and all the scandals.

As soon as we got reached close proximity the stupid loudspeakers predictably parped up, 'you are trespassing, you are being recorded, evidence is now being collected and we will pursue you….

Oh fuck off! I knew it was all bullshit and maybe the security dudes would turn up but unless they live next door then we would be long gone. Sheffield is a good 20-minute drive away.

11_IMG_5600_11.jpg

There is in fact, a house nearby and it is occupied but they didn't seem to give a shit and nobody stirred. Good with us, I thought.

Still, it got my pulse racing, and I felt we needed to get it done and get out quick.

Some other explorers have not dared walk inside due to collapsing floors, and a cellar hidden under all that crap underfoot. I just walked in and bollocks to the consequences.

4_IMG_5593_4.jpg

Just like Birkdale, you don't walk under crumbling masonry as a badly timed cough may result in a serious squashing.

5_IMG_5594_5.jpg

Those resting beams were not there before, are they going to renovate it?

7_IMG_5596_7.jpg

9_IMG_5598_9.jpg

10_IMG_5599_10.jpg

The scaffolding was there last time, encrusted in rust. One day in the past someone had an idea to fix things up.

6_IMG_5595_6.jpg

…’if it wasn’t full of broken windows and decay, I could mistake Thornseat Lodge for a new Barrett Home or equivalent’…

When they built it, it must have looked like something from the future, compared to the grim blackened, or red-bricked style of early Victorian architecture.

12_IMG_5601_12.jpg

13_IMG_5602_13.jpg

I did have to watch my footing inside, although with little roofing left, inside was more like outside.

14_IMG_5603_14.jpg

Look at the size of that room, with an open fire and those bay windows. It must have been grand once.

15_IMG_5604_15.jpg

Balancing along here was a little tricky; there was a sizable drop into the old cellar.

16_IMG_5605_16.jpg

It must have been a bathroom once, a shame there are no toilets for the LooLoo community to fawn over.

17_IMG_5606_17.jpg

Don’t you love dangling radiators?

18_IMG_5607_18.jpg

19_IMG_5608_19.jpg

@dizzydiscovery takes some pictures of the sky and ignores what is all around him.

20_IMG_5609_20.jpg

Besides many radiators, it was hard to find anything resembling evidence of past habitation.

21_IMG_5610_21.jpg

I did see some drawers and cupboards up there, however, they were a little hard for me to reach. There could even have been some ancient HP Sauce bottles lingering around.

22_IMG_5611_22.jpg

The second floor was out of the question and we couldn't even find any collapsing stairs.

Heading out, the loudspeakers continued to threaten us with court, fines, jail, surgical castration, and all things terrible if we didn't leave NOW.

25_IMG_5614_25.jpg

The back of Thornseat Lodge was much like the front, a wreck that probably cannot be rescued.

26_IMG_5615_26.jpg

We did find the swimming pool which is outdoors, quite small, and very overgrown.

Another section lay further up which looked like some other outhouses, but I felt we were pushing our luck. They had installed all the security crap up there as well.

27_IMG_5616_27.jpg

It was time to leave, but first, we needed to wave into the cameras. If we were going to be arrested, it would have happened by now, seeing as this visit was early October 2020.

28_IMG_5617_28.jpg

We left feeling good. This was the first of many in the Sheffield area that would be visited on that day.

30_IMG_5619_30.jpg

Thornseat Lodge was conquered, and bollocks to the security system. We were here for the photography and not to vandalise it more.

That must have been quite a grand place in its day. I still find it crazy that such places can fall into such condition.

BTW - I gave you a 100% vote as for so many years we have spoken about feeling the difference in vote value when price rises. We are only at 70 cents -How is yours feeling? ;)

Too expensive to renovate I would guess, though it looks like they started and gave up.

I was just chatting to @meesterboom about this. The HIVE feed suddenly jumped and now I have pending posts of $100. It makes me nervous to be honest which is ridiculous.

The perception is real. 45 mins ago, my posts were $70, now they are over $100. Yet there have been no extra votes.

You know I have not witnessed these times before, but the jealousy can also be real. I made more HIVE when it was 11c per token. My payouts where then $20 or so. I hope the zealots can contain themselves.

I did say :)

I think I should write something about this. A lot of people look at the dollar value alone, even if the HIVE earned is less.

I think I should write something about this.

I figured you would! It needs putting into perspective. Things are not always as they seem.

Did you know I have not had a >$100 post before today. Writing and editing for more than what McDonalds pays is a new experience for me.

Congrats!! It is a milestone accomplishment for sure.

All of those slave labor post earnings are now starting to add up.

Thanks, I do intend to grab a domain and place all these on there at some point, the 'Tales' that is. They take around each 90 mins to write, proof-read, edit and polish up before I post them.

Thats half the trouble the prices make new zealots and them be the ones that sometimes go a little stir crazy! :OD

Thanks, I hope you are right. I am back out exploring this weekend again, so have last years backlog to clear first! I hope I can still climb up walls. I'm a little fatter and less fit than last October time. !WINE.

That bloody lockdown has a lot to answer for. I'm currently shedding my winter/lockdown coat so to speak, is a bit worse than normal!!

I need to do some press-ups or something. I have been told a 7'foot wall awaits climbing on Sunday by my partner. Am I looking forward to that?! Body weight is hard to lift when you're getting older.

I know that. When I am in the play park with the kids occasionally I hang from the monkey bars and boy do I feel it!!

A sunny day makes a great photo. Love that one where you can see through the window holes across the fields.

That tannoy nonsense. Surely they can't believe it works on anyone?

I was a nice day, always a bonus for exploring. Those ferns wet would have soaked us and placed a damper on the rest of it. The tannoy.. I believe does not work anymore, I did not sabotage it heh...

It was asking for it! The tramps not the nice day. Can't have you sabotaging the weather, it's only just getting better!

Are those speakers a common thing? I guess they will scare some people away and I bet any security bods don't really want to go out there anyway. Nice pics as usual.

They are not normal. I rarely encounter any type of security, even these robotic ones. It's in a very rural spot, we would be long gone before they arrived. I think they know this.

Seems a waste of money all that faux security for a building where even the scaffolding is abandoned!

Total waste, and is it even monitored anymore? I have my doubts. !WINE.

Wow, that is pretty cool. I think I kind of remember this one from when you tried last time. At least the picture of the path leading up to it seems familiar. That photo of the back of the structure is really awesome.

Yes, it was a must do again, but is not very close to where I live. We were heading to Sheffield and it was en-route.
