“Every day is a good day. There is something to learn, care and celebrate." - Amit Ray

Hello everyone, my beautiful hive naija people, it's another beautiful weekend and we are so happy to have you here once again to make the engagement fun as always. And as announced the last time, our winner for every weekend engagement will be in charge of choosing the topic of discussion and also in charge of selecting the winners of his or her choice based on the engagement and response of participant. So for this weekend, our topic of discussion was chosen by our last two weeks winner @princessbusayo, so stay tuned, hehe.

untitled.gif

OBJECTIVE

As we all know, the Hive Naija Weekend Engagement is focused on promoting the togetherness of the Nigeria brethren together through engagement and it's also now concerned of the well being of each and everyone who is part of the engagement. This account was opened to make the engagement more personal and official you can find the INTRODUCTION POST to read more about the purpose and aim of this new account and also do well to follow the account so as to know when a post is made.

Last week, the topic was "A BETTER Hangout"

untitled.gif

We had over 200+ comments last weekend, it was so nice seeing a lot of people who engaged and sharing their thoughts and ideas with us, I want to appreciate you all for the consistency, quality engagement and your efforts, let's keep them coming ya all. Special thanks to everyone who makes this hang out possible.

A long time ago, I thought, I shared and I asked "Why don't we Chat on hive every Weekend?"
And you all said... YES

"Well, we won't be the first as there are some weekend engagement trends already on Hive! But this would be THE NIGERIAN VERSION!"

untitled.gif

I will drop a topic every Friday (Today's topic is below), share your thoughts on the matter, reply to someone else opinion, and interrogate the opinion if you like. Keep the discussion on. If you don't have anything to say about the topic. Just reply to someone else's comment.

Do all these in the comment section, as that is where it all goes down.

untitled.gif

There are no further rules, please banter as you like, speak any Nigerian language (Igbo, Yoruba, pidgin, Efik), anything, as long as someone else can understand.

Pls note : However, please don't take it to the extreme.

This week's engagement starts Immediately after you see this post and ends on Sunday at 11:59 pm.

Prizes for this week

Prizes are distributed to the winners after considering their interactions and also their contributions to the topic. And we have made some little changes and improvements in the prizes too. This week's prizes;

SPENDER/SAVER

untitled.gif

This weekend, we will be discussing about our incomes/allowances, are you a spender or a saver? Well, that's just the top of the iceberg, what we really want to know are below...

  • Do you think a student who collects allowances at home should also save? How many percent do you think it's okay for a beginner?

OR

  • Do you save? Why do you think it's important for you to save?

Remember, the aim of the hangout is to bring Nigerians together so make sure you have this in mind when responding to the questions. And feel free to add even more to it if you have any. And also, we all should do well to share our responses on Leothreads also and share the links here on the hangout so others can go and engage on it. Also don't forget to use the #samhangout and #leothreads (it will be a determinant for choosing our winners).

In the spirit of implementing some suggestions, we have chosen our last week's winner @balikis95 to be the one to suggest a topic for next weekend's hangout and she will also be in charge of choosing the winner (any one that participates), all you have to do is suggest the topic during the week and then the winners. To our topic choosers, they will receive 5% of the hangout post they suggested the topics.

Okay Let's Gist!!!!

Be as simple and sincere with the discussion, hehehe.

untitled.gif

Don't you think we are forgetting somebody?... Well, I'm sure we are...

Oh yes before I forget, there are also prizes for those that did well to invite someone new to the party and also you that has done well to invite someone you are also not left behind because you didn't leave anyone behind. But wait... Not so fast, this time you have to be more intentional about your invite, yes that's right...you know what you benefit when you engage so why not let others know about it. In fact I will advise you to look beyond the prize and look more to doing something different even for your Naija brethren by showing them the way here.

untitled.gif

With all that said, let the discussion begin....

I don't think this is a question anyone should say no to, yes we should try our possible best to save a lot if you are capable, and if one one is not capable to save so much, there should be a particular amount you have to save daily.
Saving is a good habit cause it prepares you for future arising matters. One would be able to sort out impromptu happenings

0

Yes, saving is important because of emergencies that may arise later when we do not expect.

0

Exactly like now my laptop is bad, but I don't have the amount the repair it , hopefully after I sort out some other thing with the savings have, I can then save to repair the laptop later on.

If I had enough savings I should have fixed it up immediately

Saving is a sure deal just that sometimes, too much bills will limit many people to do the needful

Yea, sometimes I feel reluctant to take out of the money that is not even enough but then I realize money is never enough, responsibilities keeps setting in somehow

You are absolutely right but then not everyone earns daily, some are in a weekly basis and some are monthly but the most important thing is to save and be prudent in spending.

Okay,,, this is something I am interested in talking about and I believe my fellow Naija will agree with me on this and share theirs too. I am waiting for your beautiful ideas people.....

So, let me start sharing and offloading those ideas on my mind 😋🥰

Do you think a student who collects allowances at home should also save? How many per cent do you think it's okay for a beginner?

Okay, well I believe saving is good and important. Just as the saying that one should not eat with both hands, which means that you should always save and not spend everything as it comes in because we don´t know what emergency may arise next, and then we wouldn´t be able to have something drop into the pocket, especially when as a student, you call home and they tell you to manage what you have for now until who knows when.. This is because your parents may not be buoyant at that period and might just manage to send little that you know cannot sustain you. So it is better to always save for rainy days just like the way the ants do. They save to enjoy later and have something to hold onto while waiting for more later.

In a nutshell, a student who is wise enough to understand how important saving is and knows there are lots of needs to be met which of course, you cannot keep calling them at home to send money for this, money for that every time. Let them enjoy their lives too and concentrate on other aspects of responsibilities. When you get your allowances, it is good to spare some per cent and keep them aside while you make do with the ones left... So, being a student doesn´t exempt you from saving. At least for a start, you can begin with 5% then keep increasing to 10...20... as you decide.

Do you save? Why do you think it's important for you to save?

Yes, I save and the per cent I spare depends on factors surrounding me and the goals I need to achieve. I believe every human being have their decision on how much should be set aside for savings so that you will have something to go to when the need arises or an emergency shows up.

It is important to save if you are wanting to live a financially stable life. Saving will save you later in the future and also, will help you achieve your goals when you are committed to saving. For me, I save 20% per month of what I earn and do spend in a reasonable way through budgeting and not spending impulsively. I believe if one has missed saving and thinks it´s late, once you have got a source of income, you can decide to increase the per cent to save more than what you could have gathered if you had started early.

Thank you for reading and sharing your ideas too. Here is my threads too.

@merit.ahama @nkemanakonam89 @emreal @kingsleyy @mercysugar @abdul-qudus @glorydee @funshee @iskafan @edystrings etc please come over.

Good evening friends. It's a good feeling coming back to thus hang out again. And this weekend topic is quite an interesting one.
My experience in this matter of saving started when I turned sixteen. I can remember vividly how my late father took me to a mortgaged house (kind of commercial bank) where I could start saving. I opened an account and was given a passbook. The sight of the passbook along with my meager savings was so encouraging. That has been my lifestyle all along. There is something about savings I want to show you.......just come along.

Go To The Ants

The little animals, or rather should I say insects are known for resilience and hard work. They labor throughout the dry season, gathering seeds deep down under the earth. They do this so that when the rainy season comes, a season that can not withstand. They prepare so much for rainy days.

Simply put, there is wisdom in saving. No one expects or looks forward to a period of need to spend money to save life or bail out oneself from a dangerous situation, but one has to prepare. And the only way to do that is to save.
I once had a younger neighbor who wanted to drive his car after secondary school he started saving half of his pocket money in the hands of his mother at that tender age.

How Much Can You Save?

From my little knowledge of personal economics, an individual could escape poverty when they have up to 25% of their net income.
This has to be by individual discipline. Without which one may not be able to account for what his or her money was spent.
The need to only get what would satisfy your need and not want. Remember that human wants are insatiable and no matter how you satisfy your present desire, you will always want more like Oliver Twist.

Some Friends

There are funny friends who I can call a negative influence. They will tell you It doesn't matter. This phrase is common such that until have finished the money you have, they won't allow you rest. This is why thr issue of financial discipline comes to play.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Wow,, you talk true sir. If one needs to have the knowledge of saving, go to the ants and learn from them. Also, one would escape poverty if one is disciplined to save up to 25% consistently. Of course, this has to come with dealing with budgeting and spending. In the future, one will come to appreciate the fact of saving at the right time. Thanks for sharing your idea on this topic.

Thank you so very much.
The power to save is a propensity to break the chords of poverty.

They day I read very well about the ant I learned more about saving and industriousness, I also learned the importance of making wise use of any moment which includes the time we should start saving, is not good to keep procrastinating on what we want to do.

0

avatar

Thank you so much. The message is understood.
Ants could be small but their reasoning is worth emulating. Time is a precious gift that we ought to use wisely.

I think we should teach people to save. A piggy bank for the kids could be a starter.

Then that your experience is the deal because you have actually spoken well.

I salute you wisdom and sense of illustration.

You are absolutely right, saving is very important and one needs to stay out of negative influence because those kind of friends are taking their savings and investments serious in the closet.

I was once a spender, I never thought I will be able to save because then I only buy buy buy buy at some point in my life I learned to save in a hard way, I had an emergency that requires money and I had no kobo I had to borrow from people who saved and I paid back with interest after that I started saving no matter how little.

I save with insurance company and I also have a piggy bank under my bed were I save little amount on daily basis.

It's very important to save for the rainy days, even ants saves food during dry season so that they can survive in the rainy season.

For me that would be when you are unproductive as a lady. I can tolerate anything else. But you see that word called unproductiveness I can't.

I love it when my partner can think and solve problems for herself. And when I have an issue I talk to you and you give me possible suggestions for a solution. Not that you will just sympathize or become sentimental without a solution.

If I notice my partner is that kinda person and I talk for like three times without changes or a move to want to make effort to change. I'm calling it off.

On the question of Whether I am a saver /spender, I am a 100% saver. But wait who wouldn't want to save knowing that unexpected things happen and conditions change too.
Saving has been a habit I developed right from childhood days. No one thought me that, I just found myself doing it.
I remember in my primary school days, my old math set then was my bank. Each coin gift I get goes in there, sometimes I take out some to buy stuffs like sweet, puf puf, eko (agidi) and the rest.
Till date despite having a savings bank account, I have a piggy bank where I save too.

One Surprising thing about habits is that people who know that you have such habits will always need your help in such areas.
In senior secondary school then, I and my friends decided to be saving money and I was the one selected to be keeping the money. Hahaha,

It's a pity then, because I wonder how they will handle the unexpected, maybe they will go borrowing.

avatar

Hahahaha.... you made me remember the math set.... I kept my money there too and would always carry it wherever I go because I was always happy seeing that I save and had lots of money even though I spent it on goodies in the end. Lol

When one cultivates the habit of saving, trust me, it would be hard to back out of it because it is what you have trained yourself with. It is always good to save.

Jeezzz, so I wasn't the only one who hides money in math sets, hahaha😂

On the issue of saving for students. Despite the opinion of the majority, I feel one must earn before you save.

To be realistic, do you expect a student collecting an allowance of less than 10k a week to save

A Student receiving less than 10,000 naira as allowance will have to consider the following.

Buy foodstuffs Pay utilities School dues Some vital personal care.

At the end of the day, there's nothing left to save.

Instead of saving, one would rather think about the best way to spend judiciously, and how to get a side hustle to earn more before one can think about saving.

Not that I'm against saving, as a matter of fact, I support it with my full chest. But then saving entirely depends on what a person earns per time after removing vital expenses.

It's easy to save when your sponsors give you an average income and your school/environment doesn't suck Down expenses.

You can check out my thread here

Wow
I love Ur view on this

Some students get enough allowance to really save well while some have insufficient funds...

In this case, the savings stuff differs from one student to another

0
0
0.000
avatar

I love your perspective on this..
Me, I feel say saving takes discipline and even if a student collects 10k weekly, if he wants to save, he will and still manage to spend the rest with the remaining one. It´s all about being disciplined. Even if one removes #200 to save weekly, it will be something in months to come, that is if such a student is looking at it for the long term, even having to spare something in case an emergency shows up and there is no money elsewhere. So, it all amount to discipline and focus.

0
0
0.000
avatar

To be realistic, that level of discipline often comes when there's a goal to achieve. Or you have a piggy box you use.

0

avatar

Talking like this doesn't mean I don't like saving or I don't save. As a matter of fact, I strive had to spend on my self because I love to always plan and set my priorities right. It's as though I'm already use to saving so much that when money comes into my hand, it already finished in my head after I sort out bills as I also count the money I save as spent.

Just like one must earn before they spend. One must earn before they save too. Except your allowance is much, and you don't have real life priorities and goals, saving ain't for the weak

0
0

It is definitely not for the weak because it takes determination and focus

Happy election day my kontri people

Una don vote? Are you a patriotic Nigerian? Okay oo, make we look into today's topic

Do you think a student who collects allowances at home should also save? How many percent do you think it's okay for a beginner?

I think it depends on how much the student collect from home
Take for instance myself as an example, my pocket money while I was in school never passed #3,000 . I experienced so much hardship in school, I never had enough for my basic expenses not to talk of savings. Whereas some students get enough allowance from their parents, those set of students should make savings a must instead lavishing the money...at least 15% savings from the allowance is nice

Do you save? Why do you think it's important for you to save?

Yes, I save now that I can make my own money even though I didn't have the opportunity to save while I was a student.

Savings is very vital for emergency
My savings have saved the day for my sick son sometimes when he had serious sudden ailments and was rushed from the school to the emergency unit in the hospital

So Savings should be encouraged no matter how little.

Yes, I think it depends on how much a student receives from home because all fingers are not equal and many students are going through hardship even in school that they need to attend to food first before anything. Besides, with the little they collect, after feeding and paying for handouts, how much will be left? But for those whose parents are able and buoyant, these people should save no matter how little because the inability to do that will make them regret it later.

Thank God you took to savings which have been helping you sort out your child´s emergency sickness.
Thank you for your contribution. We keep learning from each other.

Good evening naija pikins,na my first time for this group be dis,as nobody bin see me invite, na so I take my two legs Waka come here,I hope say I'm welcome here
I don see the question and here is my answer.

"Do you think a student who collects allowances at home should also save, how much percent do you think it's okay for a beginner?"

Yes, I believe say students wey dey collect allowance for house suppose save some of their money. Saving go fit help dem to build good money habits wey go benefit dem for long run.
As for how much percent, e go depend on how much money the student dey collect and how much e dey spend. But generally, experts talk say person suppose save at least 10% to 20% of their income. If the student fit save up to 20% of their allowance, e go be better for dem. But if e no fit save that much, make e try save something small wey e fit manage. The important thing na to start dey save and build the habit of saving.

"Do you save?why do you think it's important for you to save"
Yes I d save,
I sabi say e dey important make we save money. E good make we save money so that we fit use am for rainy days or for times when we need am pass. E fit help us plan for the future and dey prepare us for any unexpected situations wey fit happen for our life. Na good thing to get savings as e go help us avoid debt and e go give us peace of mind knowing say we get something wey we fit fall back on.
Thank you for reading and sharing your ideas.

Wow! you are absolutely correct. Saving is important and it also depends on how much a student receives from home and a worker collects as income. The higher the income, one should increase the percentage too which is always the best. Saving today will give one peace of mind knowing that they have money aside which they could use for any emergency issues unexpectedly.

Saving money is one of the most important financial habits that everyone should cultivate. Regardless of how much you earn, it is crucial to develop the habit of saving money regularly. The reason is that unexpected events can happen at any time, such as losing your job, unexpected bills or even worse, your business could be robbed. This is exactly what happened to me when my newly stocked up shop was robbed and I lost everything. Fortunately, I had some savings, which has been helping me to take care of my mum's health and some essential needs, pending the time I will have a means to start afresh.

Saving is essential for several reasons. First, it helps you to create a financial cushion that you can rely on in times of need. Emergencies can happen at any time and you need to be prepared for them. Having some savings can help you to cover unexpected bills or expenses, such as medical bills, car repairs or home maintenance.

Second, saving money can help you to achieve your financial goals. Whether you want to buy a new car, go on vacation or save for your retirement, having some money set aside can help you to achieve these goals faster. It is much easier to save when you have a specific goal in mind, as it gives you a sense of purpose and motivation.

Third, saving money can help you to reduce financial stress. Financial stress is a common problem that affects many people. When you have debts to pay off, bills to cover and no savings, it can be very stressful. Having some savings can help you to feel more secure and less worried about your finances.

Finally, saving money can help you to build wealth over time. The more money you save, the more you can invest and the more your wealth will grow. Investing your savings wisely can help you to achieve financial freedom and live the life you want.

In my case, my little savings has been helping me to take care of some unavoidable needs after my shop was robbed. They left with everything in the shop and I was left with nothing. However, thanks to the little savings I had, which has been covering some gaps. My savings provided me with the necessary financial cushion that is helping me to weather the storm in a way.

In conclusion, saving money is a vital financial habit that everyone should cultivate. Whether you are saving for emergencies, financial goals or wealth-building, having some money set aside can help you to achieve your objectives faster and reduce financial stress. So, start saving today and you will be glad you did.

Savings helps to provide financial support and security. Sorry about the goods that were stolen and thank God you have been saving, not knowing something like this would happen. No one ever prepares for unexpected events but preparing something ahead like saving will save one because at that moment, you might not see help from people and even if you do, it might not be enough to do things you want to do, but when you have money set aside in your savings, it gives you that assurance and control over your money.

I hope God help you recover all that was stolen. Thanks for your opinion and your story too.

You are right though, who would have helped with everything one is passing through in this country.

People are really struggling and it's been all man to himself, sometimes last week when I needed to get my mum food stuff and drugs then I wondered, if I had not been saving, who would I had run to for help.

It's always good to save, it gives you some sense of entitlement as you don't need begging and explaining yourself to people before they can borrow or gift you cash.
