Luke is Alive - February 19
Iwo Jima Day
The Battle of Iwo Jima, codenamed Operation Detachment, is the name given to one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, fought on the island of Iwo Jima between United States Marines and Army forces. of the Empire of Japan from February to March 1945, during the War of the Pacific.
At the end of the fighting, the Americans managed to conquer the island and control its important airfields. However, during the bloody battle they encountered extreme resistance from the Japanese, resistance that led to the death of most of their fighters.
At the top of the island's Mount Suribachi, a few days after the fighting began, journalist Joe Rosenthal took one of the most widely circulated images of World War II, titled Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, awarded the Pulitzer Prize , in which several marines are observed pushing the mast with which they erected the American flag in that place. The subsequent use of advertising by the US government sparked a controversy over the protagonists of the episode.
