A day like today but in 1919 United Artists was founded.
United Artists Corporation is an american film company. It was founded on February 5, 1919 by four greats: Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and David Wark Griffith with the intention of controlling their own interests rather than relying on commercial studios. The studio was repeatedly bought, sold and restructured. during the next century.
They were spurred on by established Hollywood producers and distributors who were tightening their grip on actors' salaries and creative decisions.
The first UA film (His Majesty, the American) was a success.
United Artists went public in 1957 with a $ 17 million stock and bond offering. The company was making an average of 50 movies a year.
Most of the post-1952 UA library is now owned by MGM, while films prior to 1952 (with few exceptions) are now owned by other companies (such as Turner Entertainment) or in the public domain.
