Unemployment benefits a solution? - Luke is Alive #51 May 09, 2021

Some economists suggest that benefits should end as people prefer to receive money from the government rather than return to the job market.

The debate among experts on what to do with unemployment benefits took hold on social media after the disappointing report from the United States Department of Labor, which revealed that in April only 266,000 private payrolls were added when economists expected at least one million.

"While it is true that there are people who needed access to higher unemployment benefits during the heart of this pandemic, we should not create a lucrative government agency that makes it more beneficial to remain unemployed rather than return to work."

An additional $ 300 a week according to the Chamber of Commerce, "results in approximately one in four beneficiaries taking home more unemployed than they earned working."

“We need to phase out those things because even though the economy is improving, we will still have a lot of unemployed workers right now. More importantly, we will not have enough vacancies for all unemployed workers."
