Two Years of Community Building: Happy 2nd Forkday, Hive!

avatar

I noticed people starting to post celebratory 2nd Anniversary posts for Hive, earlier today... and somehow it seems like we have come such a long way that it feels like more than two years!

But here we are!

hive-blog-Logo.png

Being the "Pagan-ish" types that we are, we were rather busy, down inside celebrating the Spring Equinox, which was also first thing, this morning.

Seems somehow "symmetrical" and appropriate that a community that's all about growth would happen to have its anniversary on the day we celebrate the arrival of spring!

I Remember Day One...

Such chaos and stress as an entire community engaged in frantic self-defense and came together to create a new home.

I remember being part of the — at the time — tireless "Power House Creatives" community, coming off 3 weeks of endlessly pounding on people's virtual "doors" to get them to cast votes for the "legitimate" witnesses on the old chain... ultimately, all in vain. But at least we bought a little time.

I remember Day One here on Hive because I wrote a Introduce Yourself 2.0 post to mark my own move to Hive... and it played to pretty much an empty house because I guess it hit before most people had even had a chance to check out their new accounts...

Diverging Paths...

The rather divergent paths taken by Hive and it's original "birthplace" over the past couple of years seem to offer an interesting study in "motivated decentralization" vs. "unmotivated centralization."

I always thought there was something rather ironic about it... "J.S." jumped around like a fish on try land to have things HIS WAY, but once the bag was finally his, he proceeded to do practically nothing with his ostensible "prize."

Meanwhile, a lot of people on New Hive got down to the business of taking on all the gaping holes that always plagued the old chain.

As a result, we have a pretty vibrant and swift moving community today, with LOTS of "moving parts."

Hive is not "Perfect," but...

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy to be part of the World of Hive... but like all communities, we have our issues, and we're definitely not perfect, by any figment of the imagination.

But this place does have a lot of promise, and above all the community is very active and dynamic, something that was sorely lacking on the original chain, long before Mr. Sunshine came along to rock the boat. There are days when I wonder whether there would eventually have been a fork, regardless, just because enough people would have grown frustrated enough at the seemingly endless ineptitude of the original STINC organization.

Of course, we'll never know... it's just speculation.

Personally Speaking...

I'm pretty thrilled to see Hive doing as well as it is!

Unlike many (I am guessing), I'm not just measuring "doing well" as a product of token price, but as a product of activity and new development.

With all the "Second Layer" development here, I think Hive is gradually becoming more and more of a "utility chain," perhaps a bit in the style of Ethereum... which is far more about what you can build ON Ethereum, than Ethereum, itself.

I just have a feeling that it's unlikely we'll suddenly see the Hive token go 10x, but we might well see something built on Hive go 10x, or even 100x. Particularly... if we end up being home to 20, 30 or more dApps with similar success to Splinterlands, and 20 more communities like LeoFinance... gradually, I think the Hive base token will be pulled along by the success of of our dApps, but we have to be patient.

But enough waxing philosophical! Happy Second Forkday, Hive! Glad to be here!

Thanks for reading, and have a great week ahead!

How about YOU? What do YOU remember most about the fork and starting over at our new "home?" Were you part of any of the community efforts that went into the initial "defense" and then the subsequent move? How do you feel Hive has done, compared to your hopes/expectations? Two years has flown by, much developments and further forks making Hive vibrant in working together.

Yes the original transition some never fully realized immediately what had happened, majority of daily users noticed immediately and worked hard at letting people know.

Best thing that happened at the time, now proud to be part of a truly decentralized blockchain still supporting witnesses who made this move happen at the speed it did.

It remains slightly baffling to me that it has already been two years. At the same time, it also feels a little like this was always our home... even the three years before when it was the old chain.

Which, I suppose, goes to show the importance of community, in this equation!

Time stood still yet moved quickly with everything happening at the same time both online and offline, this has become strong community driven project which is most appealing.

We need good software and video game developers, including graphics designers. Real video games on the Hive blockchain could be huge successes. Just imagine MOBA, racing, strategy, shooter and other kinds of video games.

Now I imagined something like Steam built on blockchain technology. CS:GO and other skins as NFTs.

And the transactions on the Hive blockchain are free and fast. The gaming industry combined with the blockchain technology has so much potential. Hopefully the developers will also discover/realize and utilize this.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

Hive offers a lot of potential for independent game developers... perhaps not so much for the "big company" developers because we are fast and cheap... so "where's the profit?"

But, for sure, there are lots of independents with excellent ideas, and they could totally build their base here and do very very well.

Hive offers a lot of potential for independent game developers... perhaps not so much for the "big company" developers because we are fast and cheap... so "where's the profit?"

I (and many other people) bought the Steem Monsters (nowadays Splinterlands) beta starter set on 2018.12.30 for $10 USD worth of cryptocurrency. Steem or Steem Dollars (SBD). Currently I do not remember. But the spellbook is still sold for $10 USD. And there are entry fees for certain tournaments. And there is a withdrawal fee of 0.75% (1% on certain tokens) on the Hive Engine.

Just imagine 10 000 people buying something virtual for $10 USD. That is a clear $100 000 USD profit for the game developers. And actually a lot more people bought it, and still buying it.

Another example: Hive Punks. Currently they have a 5% market fee.

So the Hive blockchain have potential for the "big companies" too. Seeing the examples above, it is obvious that it is possible to sell a game (and theoretically everything) on the Hive blockchain.

I remember discovering communities after the fork and Leo Finance in special. I simply couldn't believe how I could live before without them. Once I discovered different communities I wanted to be everywhere as Hive offers so many opportunities. A great place to be, a home, a cozy environment to grow and make even "friends".

Yes, Hive does offer a lot of possibilities, and that's one of its strengths.

After all, how do most people use the Internet? They tend to go after their interests. And when there is so much to choose from, then it definitely helps attract — and retain — the people who come here.

I'm glad you're here and part of the community now!

The energy here during the first couple of months was pretty amazing! It almost felt like we had evacuated the population of a small planet and suddenly had the freedom of our own planet!

Never say never

I have written a post on this subject so I won't go over it again (for the hundredth time). However, I enjoy reading everyone's story and reliving our shared experience on hive. It has been an amazing journey and I am looking forward to many more years here.

I'm not discounting the possibility, by any means... I'm just not sure it's likely, while I feel that is a substantial chance that some hot layer-two game, Defi or other dApp may suddenly catch on fire and go to the moon.

I think of how LeoFinance's LEO token went from a few cents to over $1.00 at one point, and I think we'll definitely see something like that happen again, with a different project.

Of course, I have seen people occasionally talk about "$100 Hive" and I think that's also entirely possible... but it seems more likely to be something that would happen slowly and gradually over maybe 5-6 years.

Regardless, I'm here for the long haul!

HIVE just feels like an amazing way to connect with people - the blogging aspect is so much fun and brings me a lot of joy after a difficult day! Of course, the other measures of success are important, but that's what I like the most personally.

I'm a "veteran" of the earliest days of so-called "social blogging," dating back to the late 1990's, and Hive embodies much of the spirit and community sense of those early days... which is why I got involved, in the first place.

As a testament to the community here, Hive is part of almost all my days that I get online... while Facebook has quietly slipped almost completely out of my social web day.

Thanks for the "goodies!"

Two years old, and already so much have been achieved. The growth of this community is dependent on the contribution and sacrifices of its members. This speaks volumes for the members of Hive.

I think a big plus was the fact that the bulk of the the people who "made the move" to the new chain were also the most active and dedicated... and so, everyone drove the community and development forward.

Sure, some people have disappeared along the way, but we have also gained many more...

Thank you for sharing your profound thoughts. I think Hive is doing great and I wish i'd curate more. To be honest, it all took me by surprise and I became very sceptical. When although the thought went through my head how important community was to us here, I began to understand that hive made history. No other community would bond us more into this hivemind that we are. I am curious about what's next. To me it's become use cases in the physical world. make HBD circulate.
