Genius and Inspiration... vs. Perseverance and Determination

I'm not even sure why I am making this comparison, except for the fact that I overheard someone talking how "inspired" a friend of theirs was... leading to the conclusion that success tends to be the result of genius and inspiration.

I'll be the first to admit that I possess very little "genius" and only occasional "inspiration," but beyond that, I'm not convinced that either genius or inspiration is what causes something to be successful or popular.

Not that I really case very much about this thing called "success."

I bring it up, though, because as often as not it's actually perseverance and determination that leads to success. Or, at least, that leads to the completion of whatever you've been working on.

So what does this have to do with anything? Am I just making a shitpost here?

Not exactly...

If you look around, most of the things that "the world" ends up using aren't revolutionary and groundbreaking changes, but rather small incremental changes to things we are already familiar with. In fact entirely new inventions generally take quite a while to gain manistream adoption... and even then it only tends to happen because it occurs to someone to build a "bridge" of sorts between what we already know, and what is new.

Let's consider mobile phones. They really aren't that new. "Mobile Field Telephones" were used by various armed forces as long ago as 1910, maybe even earlier. Besides, mobile phones built on something we already had... telephones.

Similarly, smartphones are basically existing technology, combining aspects of laptop computers with portable telephones. Nothing there is new from scratch.

Cryptocurrencies also aren't all that new. Before there was Bitcoin, there were many other versions of alternate currencies, like "Linden Dollars" used in the internal economy of the "Second Life" system and community. Before that, there were barter exchanges with their own currencies. Maybe we can call blockchains new, but they are still just an improved way of keeping track of something we already had: Money.

On the whole, we humans tend to be fascinated by change... but at the same time we don't really like things to be too new nor to require too much effort to adapt to.

Personally, I believe it's one of the reasons why humanity always seems to be quite a few steps BEHIND the concepts and worlds science fiction writers seem to cook up. Most sci-fi writers are inspired geniuses and visionaries and their visions are usually decades ahead of where actual human development finds itself.

So — to get "selfish" about it — I'm really not too worried about not being an inspired genius... because chances are that anything I could event would face an uphill struggle to gain broad-based adoption.

And such is the way of the world, sadly.

Thanks for reading, and have a great remainder of your weekend!

Maybe we can call blockchains new, but they are still just an improved way of keeping track of something we already had: Money.

Tally sticks : The first blockchain...!
circa: 12th century - utpo 19th century
The split tally was a technique which became common in medieval Europe, which was constantly short of money (coins) and predominantly illiterate, in order to record bilateral exchange and debts.

The genius in that was it's sheer simplicity.

Tally sticks! Great example... I remember reading about those a long time ago, but had to go refresh my memory.

I've mostly been a "late adopter" of new trends... I like to make sure something isn't just a passing fad before I throw down my hard-earned cash...
