Day 800: 5 Minute Freewrite: Sunday - Prompt: Black-eyed peas

Black-eyed peas. How appropriate for the upcoming new year. But I remember a different time and place. I remember the playful jostling and shoving like we always did, especially when we knew we were about to eat our favorite food. All we had to do was make sure we were the first one to wash our hands and face.

Trying to maneuver into the restroom was where the activity took place. I can still see it now, five siblings trying to get through a door meant for only one at a time.

However, the first one to finish washing up and run to the table was greeted with "now you know you have to wait for the others" from our mom. So it didn't matter that I was always 4th or 5th to reach the table, my mom looked out for me.

I could eat Black eyed peas every day of the week. Sometimes, that's all we had. So you either learned to like them or face the alternative.

And, the alternative wasn't an option for me because I love food too much. And that's how I learned to like Black eyed peas.

Of course, no decent-loving mom would let her kids eat Black-eyed peas without Hot Water Cornbread. We'd stare at her as though she'd commited a crime if she didn' cook any. The smell of Hot Water Cornbread on top of the stove and the site of it sizzling was music to our ears. I know my siblings felt the same because we discussed it hundreds of times.

Even further proof was that there was never any left over. And you couldn't bargain for any because by the time everyone finished dipping it in the Black-eyed peas, it was soaking wet. Don't frown. It was near-the-top the most delicious meal of our childhood.

Now, we celebrate Black-eyed peas as a tradition in our family by eating them on special occasions, such New Years Day. They're meant to bring you good luck in the new year. Having come from Louisiana, the Southern traditions we observed there are still with us today.

I plan to cook some later this week.

We had our black-eyed peas yesterday, too. Got to start the new year right.

Found this one from #pypt! I've never been a big fan of black-eyed-peas vegetables. Now, the band Black Eyed Peas, are great. ;)

HaHa. Yes, I know the band. Old group. Never really listened to them though.

Thanks for visiting. Have a great day.

I love this! I can see you all tumbling out of that bathroom, eager for your black eye peas and hot water cornbread. I was an adult the first time I had black eye peas and loved them, but I could never get my kids to eat them. Maybe if I'd had your mother's recipes...

Me too, lol. Mine doesn't taste anything like hers did. Everything she and my oldest sister touched was heavenly. I've had to try to recreate it many ways, but it'll never taste the same.

I've simplified my life, not like hers staying in the kitchen all the time when she was home. 7 children were a huge task to tend to in terms of cooking. I don't even own pots and pans that huge, and don't intend to. LoL

Have a great day.

I can relate. One of my sisters shadowed Granny in the kitchen while I would sew with Mom. To this day I sew like Mom and Lori cooks like Granny--when I eat her green beans I get tears in my eyes because it tastes like Granny is right there. Our nephew has grown up cooking with his Aunt Lori, so Granny's legacy lives on.

How awesome is that. It's usually one that catches on. Since I was so busy running my mouth all the time, I didn't take time to listen or catch on to too much. Too busy outside playing tomboy.

I have some canned black-eyed peas in the cupboard. Meant to make some for New Years, but did not get around to it. Just had a sandwich instead. 🤣

Thanks for sharing your childhood memories with us on PYPT.

You're welcome. And the canned works just as good. I just prefer frozen.

But you have to spruce it up. Stil add the veggies combo I mention. they're pretty plain right out of the can.
