From under the sign in front of his office window, Supervisor Humphrey peered sternly.

Suddenly his large frame loomed over the worker's open area.

Simultaneously, all work stopped.

Surveying his superb handiwork, Humphrey was proud that upper management chose him to oversee the specifications of how the worker cubicles would be placed in relation to his office.

He loved the open concept cubicle style office arrangement suggested to him by an ambitious subordinate.

Humphrey could now see how all the case workers utilized their time.

Thinking he was highly respected by his subordinates and deserving of a higher position, he decided to help the selection along.

Quickly responding to his boss' hand motion, Dylan rushed to retrieve the recommendation ballots to distribute to fellow case workers.

Remembering the second reason for leaving his sanctuary, Humphrey shouted, “half of the day is behind us good people,” motioning towards the clock.

He was yesterday tired of micromanaging these workers.

Only God knows!

"I want every case cleared from your desks before leaving,” Humphrey ordered.

He turned as he finished, looking directly at Jaylene.

From his stance, Humphrey's case count confirmed his suspicion she'd miss her quota again today.

He shook his head in disgust.

Before he could finish uttering the words "lunch time", Jaylene grabbed her handbag, caught the elevator, and was the first in line at the cafeteria.

Sitting alone in the corner, her handbag covering the small table, she ate half the sandwich, stuffing the remainder in her bag.

A quick cursory glance made sure other co-workers didn’t want to interrupt her quiet time with petty office gossip, almost always about one toxic topic.

Heartless Humphrey.

Deep in thought while moving her head from side to side, Jaylene was startled by the alarm she’d set on her phone signaling lunch was over and time to quickly return.

Dylan stared at Jaylene's desk and wished she'd confide in him why she couldn't complete the quota.

He'd hate to include her name in the list he had compiled, but the promise of a trainee supervisor position included being able to gauge the competence of his staff.

Dylan suspected why completing the quota was a struggle for her each day, and it wasn't about accuracy.

So he refused to add her name.

As Dylan finalized his 1st quarter staff reduction list, he noticed Jaylene glance quickly on each side of her cubicle before sliding some papers back on her desk.

Unnecessary.

Dylan looked up just as Humphrey jerked the paper from his hand so he could scan the unsuspecting candidates' names before forwarding the list to Human Resources.

Satisfied, Dylan smiled as Humphrey’s mouth dropped, then closed as if for the first time he was utterly speechless.

His browbeating days were over.

All demoralizing reminders removed, Dylan smiled at Jaylene’s new 50” monitor.

Dylan's staff settled into their new routine, chatting while inputting cases as he shut the door to his office and lowered the blinds.

I sure hope Humphrey's name was on that list and Dylan got a promotion! Awesome story!

The reason for his mouth dropping was that his name was the top one. Dylan took over his office.

Oooh, I got that - yay, me! :) (I'm often a blockhead about "getting it.") But here's a line I don't get, or it's slang I hadn't heard before: He was yesterday tired of micromanaging these workers. I've heard "That's so yesterday," but not "yesterday tired." Clever story! And clever use of adverbs to achieve the exact word count. (Writing workshops have pounded adverbs out of us, but don't get me started on those brow-beating critiquers, aka "critters"....)

Lol. Thanks for your insight. I wanted the turnover, takeover to be unwritten, just action. Yesterday tired used as an adjective. Then I said also the day before that. So counting days backwards.

What have you been up to lately? Have a good day.

I like the sound of "yesterday tired," and it makes me start thinking "last-year exhausted." Or "A Monday-tired man on the street...." and wondering if a hyphen is in order here. The bigger question is how to spread the word that -ly words don't need a hyphen; it's "happily married," not "happily-married" or "severely-dehydrated." But grammar is a hopeless cause.... and that's all I've been up to, basically, thanks!

Yes happily married is a good. Sometimes you have to break rules to get your point across. It makes for a different read because all have heard the norm. But why be normal, when you can be purple in a box of yellow pencils!

Great to have you back!

Did Dylan get the 50" monitor for Jaylene? Did Dylan take the position because he knew that he could do a better job or was it something else?

A quick cursory glance made sure other co-workers didn’t want to interrupt her quiet time with petty office gossip, almost always about one toxic topic.
Heartless Humphrey.

This line was cool. I'm not much for small talk either. I would be in the same corner as Jaylene and most likely just as late with the reports. lol

Thanks for stopping by. And appreciate the warm welcome back.

Apologies if I wasn't clear. I wanted the actions to portray what happened. Humphreys look at the list then mouth dropped, and saw his days of bullying were over.

He thought Dillon was a suck up and betray his co-workers, but he turned the tables.

Yes Dylan purchased the monitor because Jaylene was afraid to tell of her disability and lose her job. Remember, Heartless Humphrey. That's why she took her work to lunch to catch up.

Then Dylan did the opposite of him in the end after he took over the office by closing the blinds and removing the time clock and let them work in peace.

I could have done much better at writing this story. I could kick myself now.

No need to apologize. We can't be a genius every day. 8-)

The story makes more since now that you explained it here. Hind-sight often helps us see mistakes if we care to look at them.

Was Heartless Humphrey's heart melted upon finding out about Jaylene's disability? This is a very poignant story; thank you for sharing it!

@justclickindiva, This picture reminded me of my Office Days and in a way most of the Office Stories matches no matter which Point Of Region we are talking here. Stay blessed.
