Frederic Remington
honorable mention: John J Audubon

I stumbled into a Monet exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and was hooked completely. Picasso's 'Mother and Child' almost brought me to my knees the first time I saw it. Frederic Remington painted the part of the world that I call home and Audubon's birds inspired a life long love for me. I'm going on a 'bird hike' in the Laguna Mountains tomorrow, matter of fact.

Thanks Russell. Glad you are alive!

Top of my list comes Caravaggio. Years ago I taught English in Rome and many a time would pop into one or other of the churches there to spend a few minutes in front of his paintings.

Anselm Kiefer reminds me of my time as a teacher in Berlin although I think I've seen more of his stuff in Japan than in Germany. I admire his thickly layered bleak landscapes with something of the Russian Front after things had gone pear-shaped about them.

I shall end with our English J.M.W. Turner.

By the way, Russell, have you heard of an English artist who lives in Australia called Clifford Bayly? He is the father of a friend of mine from my secondary school days. A fine landscape painter born in 1927 and still actively painting I believe.
