Gardening Report April - Part Two - Transplanting Seedlings

avatar

Yesterday I did the first part of the report and I thought it will be the last past as well as it seemed like there will be no possibility for more. Seedlings still need some growing and the weather was so - so. The rain has stopped but May is tricky, usually there's a frost that can destroy everything. This is a huge risk and a gamble, but there's no way out. You just hope for the best.

Today the weather was nice and we thought it worth to transplant the biggest seedlings we have, which are the different types of peppers, that we started to grow in my apartment in February. I did a post about it. Back then it seemed too early as we still had snow outside but now I think it was a good idea.

These are the pepper seedlings, as you can see, pretty big already. For the last month or three weeks we've been getting them used to direct sunlight, putting them outside in the morning and taking them inside in the evening, to protect them from cold weather and frost.

This is a necessary step as inside they don't have direct sunlight and when placed outside, the leaves get burned if the sun is too strong. With the good weather during the day the temperature can rise to +20C or above and that is already dangerous for plants that have never seen the sunlight.

There was a shower in the morning and the sheets were holding the water bit not for long as it can dry up or filter through the sheets.

This is the tool we're using to make holes where the seedlings are placed. It's a little bit conic, with the bottom part missing of course. It may look old school but it's perfect. You push it down, pull it out, take the soil out and there you go, there you have the hole for the seedlings.

Here you can see the hole and the seedlings. Look at those roots, just perfect as it gives a good start to the seedlings already. Once transplanted, these can accommodate more easily and have more chance to do well.

And the job is done! The seedlings are where they should be, happy to have more space to grow and now they have weeds protection as well.

Important Note!

Transplanting seedlings outside is recommended to be done late in the evening as strong sunlight can hurt the seedlings pretty badly, even if they have been outside getting used to sunlight. Transplanting seedlings is a stress for the seedlings already, too much sun is an extra risk.

We did it today before midday because the weather was overcast and it wasn't hot at all. There was no sunshine today, so it was perfect, but otherwise we always do it in the evening.

After transplanting, you have to water them well, so the have plenty of moisture to start growing. We didn't have to do that step today, because the soul has already plenty of moisture. The shower we had in the morning was a good thing. Besides, too much water is never good, can cause a lot of problems.

The next step will be taking care of the weeds that sometimes can grow next to the seedlings. It happens, but it's not a big problem as it's easy to eliminate. Less work compared to when you don't have these sheets. These are a huge blessing.

We don't use herbicide, so I'd rather eliminate the weeds myself and keep the garden organic. Health is wealth and it starts with the surroundings.

Can't wait to have some nice looking, healthy peppers. There's nothing better than going out in the morning and collect some healthy veggies for your breakfast.
