A kind Hiver recently gifted Srey-Yuu with some HBD earmarked for fresh apples, so @sreypov and I set off in search of apples, an exotic fruit for us here in tropical Suriname.

🍎 An Apple Quest In Suriname 🍎

Β  Β  Β Legendary Hiver @carolynstahl generously gifted the @KidSisters with 20 HBD after learning Srey-Yuu had a hankering for apples, a rare treat here for the @KidSisters, but something they miss very much from our time in Ecuador.

Β  Β  Β Looking for a reason to leave the house, Pov and I set off on one bike, a way we have traveled for many years. Traveling like this allows us to maintain a conversation while cycling, something not possible when riding two separate bikes.

6.JPG

Β  Β  Β We are bored to death here in Suriname, and at least a bicycle ride can be turned into an adventure with a little can-do attitude and a goal, in this case, apples.

10.JPG

Β  Β  Β Shortly after leaving the house, we realized 4 days of rain had left most streets underwater, but that wasn't going to deter us from adventure.

11.JPG

12.JPG

20.JPG

Β  Β  Β We eventually got out to some higher ground to finish the commute, all along the way engaging in witty banter and regretting all the unpicked fruit we saw.

21.JPG

444.JPG

Β  Β  Β We passed the US Embassy, a building I now see several times a week, and an ironic reminder that the reason we are stranded is political and not a lack of skill or desire to succeed on our part.

66.JPG

Β  Β  Β And finally we arrived at a massive Chinese supermarket and construction supply store, a very weird combo, but I won't refuse better prices wherever they may be. We purchased 10 apples for the @KidSisters, as well as some other odds and ends, and we were back on the road homeward bound.

Β  Β  Β After arriving home somewhat dry, we are reminded what we struggle for in the eyes of our daughters. Some kids want the latest fashion trends or violent video games, but our daughters love the simple things of life, and I am thankful they keep me grounded and focused on what matters in this time.

Β  Β  Β Big thanks to @carolynstahl for sponsoring these smiles!!

You do such a good job of raising those kids, they are a credit to you. I love the pic of them and the apples. Just absolutely sweethearts. And thanks for the tune too, exactly what I needed this arvo.

Awww, shucks (blushes)!! Keep the flattery coming won't ya. They are precious souls indeed, and any mission that ends with them smiling is a worthwhile one, even if it means an aquatic bicycle journey. !ENGAGE 20

That is pretty good, I've definitely got a few mouth-breathing shots of my family sleeping. I liked the part where voice began vibrating on the brick road. !ENGAGE 15

Turns out it your footage was useable after all, just had to mute a few occurrences of extreme wind noise. Thanks for being a stellar camerawoman. Don't be ashamed, we actually have some really good witty banter. !ENGAGE 15

We do our best, but of course not every effort ends in smiles. Sometimes Dad blows it too, perhaps more often than not. I save major wins for Hive content though, haha! !ENGAGE 10

The more we examine our parenting techniques using both the heart and mind, then weigh it against desired outcome, the better able we are to tweak approach and methods for the betterment of our children. In my opinion, Mr. @justinparke.

I was not able to play the video so I will try again later. The faces at the end are priceless.

Thank you for the mention. It was an applesolute pleasure haha. Sorry that was silly.

Bummer, hope it will play for you. 3Speak had some technical snafus recently, but all is in order again for now. Your small gift led to a day full of activities for all. The world is as small as we make it. Give thanks for the smiles you created. !ENGAGE 20

I finally saw it before bed and didn't take the time to tell you because I was interrupted.

I know you need to leave that place, but oh wow I would give anything to be there for a while. It looks like paradise but I know you are trapped in many ways. I would also like to go to Cambodia which I had considered last year, but all this nonsense happened in the world.

In the meantime I admire your whole family's ability to see the beauty that surrounds you and how you keep on keeping on.

Thanks for taking us on your excursion.

What a fun trip. If more people were concerned with apples, life would be much better. Keep the posts coming!

Seems we have been living out a scene from the movie "Groundhog Day" for almost two years now, and any change from the norm is considered a form adventure in this family, even if it's just some apples. Give thanks! !ENGAGE 10

This reminds me of the Pushbike Song, in particular this verse:

Well, we're ridin' along on a bicycle, honey
That's a bicycle built for two
Lookin' at my honey in the rear-view mirror
Now I got a better of view

Gosh, they use a lot of packaging on those apples! I know they can bruise easily, but that's a bit excessive.

Now you got me lost in nostalgia, forgot all about that tune. Shame I used to have a 1950s tandem bike in the USA, but I sold when I left for Cambodia 2010. If we ever make it to the USA one day, it would've been cool to have that waiting for us.

The roads here are pretty bad, so I imagine even the most rugged of apples shipped from the USA would turn into applesauce once transported within Suriname. We did save the apple jackets, and the @KidSisters have some doll fashion designs they've constructed from them. Suriname lacks an economy of scale, so almost everything we interact with on a daily basis is imported except for 20 or so varieties of fruits and vegetables unfortunately. !ENGAGE 25

I hope they'll be sharing those doll fashions! Glad they got some extra use from them.

I guess the climate there isn't great for apple growing anyway. It's funny how we crave what we don't normally have. Coming from the UK, I've always craved tropical fruits. Apples are everywhere there, so they're the boring fruit! πŸ˜† In Australia we can get the tropical fruits from the north and they're so much sweeter and juicer than we used to get in England. Same with the kiwis. I didn't realise kiwis could be sweet until we cane here.

Nice adventure and pics.

This morning I went down to the cellar to collect apples to juice. They've been stored there for about 5 months. To preserve them better they were packed in straw, sprinkled with wood ash. I have about eight apple trees in the garden. There were so many apples and despite slicing and dehydrating lots and storing lots, many went to compost.

My juicer doesn't seem to like apples very much though so i ended up with a runny pulp. Saved some in fridge and blended the rest with a banana and some green powder mix.

Well I've got a cold-pressed juicer that loves apples, so we just need to get your cellar and my juicer together, simple solution.
