We're Going Underground 🥡 Can We Sell Black Market Takeaway Fried Rice From Home?

thumbhive.png

Determined not to withdraw any HIVE and also get out from under Western Union's deathgrip, @Sreypov and I decided to market our stellar vegetable fried rice here in Suriname.

You Don't Know If You Don't Try

We are going to be selling this fried rice from home without proper licensing, but many things I wouldn't have dared do before the pandemic hit Suriname are now being overlooked by the government. I have specifically noticed many Suriname locals doing a lot of WhatsApp underground business, especially food and haircutting. Biodegradable takeaway containers are readily available and cheap, so we bought a stack and rolled the dice.

rice.JPG

We have a tiny kitchen and limited refrigeration, so these are the factors limiting how many different things we could make fresh and fast. I think for now, especially in this experimental stage, doing one thing really well is the best choice. We're selling this container at 75 SRD ($4.16 USD), which is twice the cost of what a normal fried rice here costs.

Facebook Flyer I Made

addfacebok.png

Time is always limited, but this is what I put together today for marketing on the Facebook Suriname Vegan Community. We don't have high hopes for this, but I'm curious to see how this venture will go. The local fried rice barely has any vegetables, is void of seasoning, uninspired, and @Sreypov and I still haven't had a fried rice we would call "delicious" anywhere in the country.

It's a shame people aren't socially available here, because we would much rather walk around the neighborhood and pass out flyers to build a local customer base. But based on the rudeness we've experienced foraging mangoes and coconuts in the neighborhood, we'd much rather have customers who are seeking deliciousness.

Time will tell if this is a good idea or not, but it would be really nice to cover our living costs from locally made money. Selling 10 to 15 fried rice containers per day would ensure the future growth of our Hive accounts, and I would love to not stand in line for hours at a distant Western Union every few weeks.

I hope it doesn't sound like everyone behaves this way, but it's a high enough percentage that it's the first country I've ever lived where I've lost interest in learning the language, culture, and getting to know the locals more. So far no hits on the rice yet, but we don't have the social network here that locals do, and since there is no way to socialize with strangers in this country, making friends comes only with massive efforts. !ENGAGE 10

That looks utterly delicious - I'd buy it if I were near by. Here's hoping you get a few customers to try it then spread the word! @Sreypov is such a good cook - would love to have her cooking be available! I think that's a good idea to keep it simple starting with rise dishes then if all goes well expand from there - here's hoping it takes off for you!

Thanks for the kind words. @Sreypov is an amazing cook, and she's come a long way since we met. I have to admit the fried rice is all mine though, at least Indian-style fried rice like in this photo. She does make a mean Southeast Asian-style fried rice that is outstanding. !ENGAGE 35

So far it's unsuccessful, but we have no social network here because we are foreigners and local people are very hard to socialize with. In Cambodian we once had a very successful cafe. !ENGAGE 10

Looks good. I for one personally know the quality of your food. Without you all I'd surely have starved in Kampot haha. So do you offer delivery as well? Here they have all kinds of food delivery services which are just growing and growing. Best of luck. Without trying we never know the result!

We don't offer any delivery unless it's nearby where I could do it on the bike, but we haven't even had a hit yet. Surinamers keep tight social circles, trying to support the businesses of friends and families during this crisis. We don't fit anywhere into this economic model as migrants without friends. !ENGAGE 25

Hmm that does make it a bit tough. Maybe do one day of free food and that'll get the word out. I know the quality of your cooking!

Biodegradable takeaway containers...
I like! 👍
Offer an whole catering, where people with cars could pick up
big pots for a private party etc.😉
Good luck!

We have done some catering before through friends, but we've never taken the leap of trying to sell directly, lesson learned. You need to have a vast network of friends to have a successful business at this time. Well, we only lost $6 during this experiment, so it wasn't a big gamble. !ENGAGE 15

I think it’s a good idea ! add the dragon fly jelly as desert at a little more money 💴 and put the price of the jelly dragon fruit by it self too so they see the value.

We might do that, but moving forward we've learned a valuable lesson. I think we should try and sell stuff to local restaurants to resell at a price of their choice. We had zero engagement on this offer, and I think locals prefer the 30SRD fried rice made from white rice, but it lacks seasoning and more than a few pieces of vegetables. !ENGAGE 15

Yeah that makes sense as there might be some prejudice involved as well. Also, I doubt vegans buying fried rice most of them probably cooking their own things. I think that dragon fruit jelly would do wonders if sold on consignment or upfront to restaurants. People love a cake and pastry ...sugar. !ENGAGE 30

This sounds like it could work. Here in Mexico many eateries switched to 100% delivery during the pandemic. Instead of selling from a window or street corners, many food places have focused completely on delivery by apps like Rappi or Uber Eats. You wouldn't even know they exist if it weren't for the bike / motorcycle deliveries, carrying flyers with them. Wishing you great success with your food business!

Thanks, we are not thinking it will work, just wanted to try, so far no luck. The social scene here is very hard to penetrate, and there is nowhere to meet people in public spaces anyways. We now have weekend lockdowns and a 6pm curfew, so no deliveries or anything are happening after 6pm.

I think HIVE is still our best bet right now, even though it's the still the lowest paying job I've ever had in my life. I can no longer teach Khmer online because my former students can't afford $10 per hr for private classes. I have been thinking of doing a Patreon channel for learning Khmer, as it could be a cheaper option. We only need a few hundred extra dollars a month to feel like we're doing more than just surviving day-to-day. However, I can see light at the end of tunnel. !ENGAGE 40

Well, you never know if you don't try. In any case, even it may not become an instant success, it may just supplement your finances with a few additional dollars. Too bad hearing about the complete lack of social opportunities. That 6 pm curfew sounds insane! Aren't food deliveries exempt from that, being essential and such? Oh of course, forgot you were underground! Sorry. Hoping the situation will improve soon.

I think there are a few delivery services that have recently been granted post-lockdown delivery status, but they are too "official," so we wouldn't feel comfortable using them. We did see a new propane tank exchange service that can operate during lockdown hours, and that will be a lifesaver, especially when we run out of propane of Friday evening during a full-weekend lockdown.

Friend, from here I will be praying for that business to prosper. I know you are very realistic, but at least consider that you are good at what you do, especially in the preparation of a good dish. I bet that rice must be very delicious and that many people will buy it. The best phrases ''if you don't try it, you won't know if it works'' or something like that. You're trying, you've got the will and you're happy, if the rice doesn't sell, try something else. But so far, it's good to know that you have a lot to undertake and together with your wonderful family you have a good team.

Blessings to you and your family, especially little Monkey B, the best member of the team! :D

Well....it looks like HIVE is still the best gig in town, but we still need extra income because the food prices increase every few days and the Suriname dollar also drops each day. Locals are starting to look more and more stressed, and are now behaving more selfishly in public. I fear for the future here, and doubt we are far behind Venezuela, especially with recent major oil discoveries off the coast. Much love from the family and I brother. !ENGAGE 60

Good luck! Looks delicious, like the chinese-venezuelan fried rice. Here in my country, due crisis, everybody is selling something through WhatsApp or other social network and with any license hehehe

I think these underground businesses are the way of the future, but as migrants we lack the social network to develop a customer base. There are some immigrant communities here that we feel we'd have more success in, but Brazilians, Guyanese, Haitians, and Cubans live in tightly knit communities, and we'd likely still face the same problems.

The Haitians have been the most open and friendly group of people here in Suriname, perhaps because they understand our situation here. !ENGAGE 20

I also think it's the future... Yes, it shouldn't be easy to get a customer base but I think that what you offer is quality, exotic, and little by little you can grow and reach the goal of a new income of money while you are in Suriname :)

Finally :) Congrats ya'll! 🕺
I should work on testimonials fast no?
Just by looking at this picture I can assure future clients that it would be wise to buy two containers to prevent potential disputes between meat eating family members fighting to get a taste of the vegan life.

Please include warning not to eat the packaging by accident...or if using hands watch finger tops ;)

Ha-ha, it was kind of a flop, but we hit the social media hard for a few days. Surinamers is the hardest country to build social networks that I have ever lived in. I think we just focus more on internet work, but you're welcome to come take a fried rice to go anytime you need, I'll give you a major discount and let you pay in sh*tcoins if you like. !ENGAGE 35

Flop? Don't give up yet brother. There are enough strategies to try out...soon :)

  1. : Videorecord taste sessions and let the taster(s)describe the experience.
  2. : Videorecord taste sessions and let the taster(s)describe the experience.
  3. : Repeat 1 & 2
  4. : After 12 taste sessions you have enough material to edit a 1 minute drool

We're already reminded of how quickly the world is changing. In the last week it's become to hard to secure even the most basic of foods like brown rice and tomatoes on a daily basis. A car is needed here to have any success in this country. I spend so many hours on the seat of a bicycle to do the simplest of things, it's so inefficient.

It's more profitable to cook dishes for all of you Hivers to enjoy. I have been drumming up some NFT ideas lately where I could feature a PDF cookbook as the unlockable file. !ENGAGE 15

There are definitely great people with good ideas for the growth and livelihood of your family, the reality is that you must take risks to see if you can win or lose. That rice is observed from here very rich and its presentation is fantastic. and if it doesn't work for you you'll be glad I tried it ... lots of applause super chefs @justinparke success

Thanks for the kind words, at least the only invest are the cheap containers, and this post actually covers those costs. I still think we are better to stay active on HIVE, especially as the economy here slips more and more into desperation. If things get a little worse, it may actually be better for us because locals might start accepting crypto as payment for apartment rent. !ENGAGE 35

Sorry if this is a ditsy question, do you withdraw your crypto via western union somehow?

Btw, good luck with your venture, I hope it works.

No problem, I wish that were possible, but the problem is I can't open a bank account here because I don't have a notarized and apostilled labor contract to prover where my money comes from. There are a few ATMs here that dispense US dollars, but you have to have an account with that bank first.

What I'm left with is withdrawing the local currency from an ATM at unrealistic exchange rate, although better than it was a year ago. Western Union is still the cheapest way for me drain my life savings to use as rent and survival money here. I am almost able to keep up with the losses via my Hive account, but now we're almost broke, so I'm gonna to start transferring funds off of HIVE eventually, unless I can get my landlord to accept HBD. !ENGAGE 15

Give thanks, time will tell, but I can't say we are optimistic due to the economic crisis. Much like Venezuela, the locals here are in survival mode, only helping close friends and family in this time. We are outside these social circles, and we find it really hard to make friends with or trust many of the locals. !ENGAGE 10

That rice looks great and I wish you best of luck! I went trough similar venture in Montreal in 2012 doing vegan catering slash meals on wheels with my friend from a tiny kitchen. Unfortunately, it didn't workout because was also, going for vegan demonstrations, and rescuing cats. Eventually I decided to go back to Toronto, because I felt like I am wasting my time because the business was not progressing fast enough do to her many interests. Anyway, you don't have to worry about anything like that, so you should be okay, lol.

We certainly have no feline rescue distractions in our way, only the economic crisis and a really tough population to penetrate. One thing we've learned is folks here aren't culinary adventurous, even the overwhelming majority of ethnic Indians here say they can't stand traditional Indian food. !ENGAGE 50

We are careful to stick to Facebook only for now because we know the government will take advantage of any "illegal" activity if they can make a quick buck. Locals here don't even use Facebook as it's a bit of a risk, but they have WhatsApp, a private place where they can communicate with a secret customer base. Our biggest problem is penetrating the closed social circles of this country. We've made less than 10 friends here in 2 years, and we walk the streets every day.

In Cambodia, my first day in the country landed me with more friends than I had time to socialize with. Everything here is the opposite of Cambodia, and I think that's the hardest part for my family. Thanks for the kind words my friend. !ENGAGE 20
