My Curly Hair Story πŸ’…

(Edited)

Since my curls came back (as a toddler I used to have the hair type 3a or 3b, but it changed into type 1 or 2a when I started to go to school) in my pre-teens (type 2c) I didn't know how to manage them or take care of them, until a few years ago. I either had dry frizzy hair or way too oily hair from the products that I used to put on my head, which made my locks too heavy. And then my hair journey changed a few years ago, when I started watching some videos of some fellow curly queens.

These women educated me into all the types of hair and explained what hair porosity meant and what to look for in products for your specific hair composition. That's how I got to know my curls way better and understood why it "acted" the way it did and why my hair kept being dry even though I had put a lot of product in my hair that same morning. I wanted to know why I had to put styling products in my tresses every few hours, while other women only had to style it once a day. I've also learned how much maintenance curly- and kinky hair needed and how fortunate I was to be able to have access to the information and the products needed for my type.

Ingredients which were contributing to my dull frizzy and dry hair were sulphates, silicones, mineral oil, waxes, parabens and drying alcohols, so I've made it into a habit of reading the ingredients list when buying leave-in conditioners, shampoos, conditioners and other hair styling products and I've been happier with my hair ever since. What also helped was the change in my hair routine; I started to follow the LOC-method, which stands for liquids, oil and conditioner. So I wet my hair (or after a wash) and put coconut oil in it and after that my leave-in conditioner. I also don't use regular shampoos anymore and rather use a co-wash instead. The brands that have worked for me so far are Aunt Jackie's and Cantu. Not sponsored πŸ˜….

Anyway, does any of this seem familiar to you in your own hair journey or someone close to you who also faces some hair challenges? Would like to read about it below. Disclaimer: Please do your own research, because every hair composition has specific needs and care. What works for one person doesn't necessarily have to work for another.

A little black soap is all I need, but then again I keep my hair hidden in a turban. This post has me all kinds of curious now because I didn't there were number/letter codes for hair types. !wine

Does that black soap have sulphates in it or is it completely natural? hihi
I also didn't know anything until a view years ago when I stumbled upon YouTube videos explaining it all to me.

Below picture is easy for me to distinguish the types:

Oh yeah, just like with skin types hair on every head is very personal, as some women (especially mixed women) could have different types on their head. Just like with a cousin of mine: the upper hair is type 3, while the "kitchen" part is type 2, so both sections actually need a different approach. Also treated hair could have an impact.

Whahahaaaa yeah it's Curacao. Those were the last pictures of me on a vacation outside of Suriname, so it may be that people will see a lot of those vacation pictures. Those were the only pictures I liked where I had a "good hair day" hahahaa.

My kids using this product from Brazil, can't even remember the name but works nice. Not greasy and heavy. They were using some the nut oilγ€€stuff at first that could be used on the skin but wouldn't really bring out the curls.

I like that these new oil products can be used on the skin and the hair. The coconut oil is the bomb. haven't used it in a while though. I wish they ( well they probably do) had slightly different scents like coconut berry, coconut citrus.

Yeah, I've also tried using Brazilian products and they did work well, but still reverted back to Cantu. Someone I know with type 3 uses the Brazilian products more and found Cantu to dry her hair out, so that's how we should all try out until we find the perfect match.

Coconut oil is really a lifesaver. As a kid I only used it on the skin and didn't like the smell so didn't even think of putting it in my hair, but now we use a type that we find in the kitchen section of the supermarket, which is actually for cooking. The smell of that is not so pungent. But coconut oil mixed with other ingredients to counter the smell is an idea hmmm...

Quite interesting. I’m learning a lot about my hair too. I stopped perming my hair 2 years ago. I didn’t want to do a big chop so little by little I trimmed the straight ends. I have 4c hair and my curls are tight. I have great shrinkage. I use Cantu as well and now enjoy trying out different oils. I recently learned how to do braids so I’m enjoying trying different protective styles.

I would really like to try out other oils, like Argan for example, but I'm afraid that we could only find knock offs, while natural coconut oil could easily be found here.

My cousin with type 3 also found shea butter, but with the economy now it became a bit too expensive for us, otherwise I would use that also.

Thank you for sharing your story 😊.

I hear coconut oil is one of the best oils for hair care. πŸ˜†Yes, somehow there are many knock offs for argan oil.
Thanks for sharing your hair photo and products. Love your hair. πŸ˜ƒ

For hair and body πŸ˜‰. Some people also say that it's good for cooking some dishes, but don't know if I've tried that.

Thank you... 😊. We as women should love all of our features, even those we don't like and believe me there was a time I didn't like my hair (it wasn't like this then though hihi) πŸ˜….

Haha. Yes. Self-love is good. You made a great point.
Coconut oil makes food really tasty. I love the flavor but haven’t had it often. Oh yeah, it’s good for the skin as well eh. πŸ˜€I should try to get some.

I love curly hair & your first pic (full of attitude)!πŸ˜‰
Amazing how much we can use coconut oil, i use it also as a lotion
for my skin and also pure shea butter...

Hahaha thank you, thank you 😊.

Yeah, when there's residue left on my hands I also put it on my skin. It's a waste to wash it off. We had a discussion about all of the beneficial properties of coconut oil one time with a then medical student and he pointed out how little research was done in the medical field, because it wasn't profitable to those companies and how he found it a shame of good resources.

...because it wasn't profitable to those companies..
And it would probably replace 70-80% of their "artificial"/chemical products πŸ˜‰

I think that's also about right, because coconut oil's so versatile...
Big corp working against everything that might be a possible threat πŸ€¦β€β™€
