Harvests, Finished Clearing Trail, Stained Posts, Fire, Grilling, Exhausted - Sunday
The squash plants are really filling in the garden now and the late ones are now starting to produce. 14 pounds picked yesterday morning and I had to do some sorting once I got them to the cooler.
My tools were still on the hillside for the trail and I headed up to haul them down and finish cutting the trail in. I was raking down the hill when I found this huge bolt just below a large rock. I presume it is a railroad bolt from the once upon a time the railroad ran above.
It was in the middle of the hillside well own from the top.
I cut the last section into the hill and raked the trail clear of debris.
I gathered all the tools and hauled them back to the garden shed. The trail is now fully made and I will make steps later. For now it is easily hikeable and gives us easy access to the upper sheep pen.
I was soaked in sweat and headed inside to cool off.
At noon I headed out to the garden and rolled my way down the bean rows. The first 2 rows had given me 18.5 pounds and the 6 rows I picked through yesterday gave me only 9 pounds.
After some work on my cart design I decided to give the brown stain a try on the treated posts. They are green treated but the stain turned out pretty good on the test I did.
I stained the one post of the second gate and it turned out quite dark. It looks good with the lighter tones of the gate.
I didn't take the hardware off so did not stain the other post yet.
I went to the gate by the tool shed and removed it and the latch. I used the brown stain on the bottom of both gates as it is not seen anyway. Then I used up the rest of the one partial can of stain on both posts. The right post turned out way darker than the left.
I got a fire going in the pit for the afternoon. The boys had Doctor Who on so I sat and watched some of them in the heat of the day.
The cucumbers in the main garden had a few that were big enough to pick. I wanted them off the plants to hopefully let the plants spread quickly.
The turkeys have been panting a lot with the heat and as I headed for the pole garden I saw this one being extra smart and standing in the water. It wasn't panting or breathing hard and seemed good and happy.
I found a couple more cucumbers in the pole garden and did a little supporting of some of the vines.
I grilled steak for dinner and we had baked summer squash and green beans from our garden along with cucumber slices. This time of year is great for the most local food possible. The steak came from 5 miles north of our farm.
I'm pretty worn out after the long week of hard work. I made it a short while before getting out to go put the birds to bed then myself to bed.
The heat is here so I have to try and be a bit more mindful of what I am doing around the farm when. Today I have to get harvests done, head up to check on the melon garden, stain the other post, get the studio railing started, should probably wash my laundry, and I need to try and rest some to recuperate as I am feeling super worn down.
