Seedlings, Weeding, Cutting Grass, Moving Rocks, Tunnel Work, Moving Lumber, Butcher Setup, Fire, Trailer - Tuesday

Woke up to another .05" of rain in the gauge, thankfully the last that is forecast for at least a week. We might even get to 80F today for I think the first time this year.

I have summer squash that have sprouted after the reseeding. Hopefully the warm temps get them to catch up fast since this year I am going to be way behind on the normal beginning of harvests. Normally I am harvesting by the first week of July but likely not this year.

IMG_20220621_110229_HDR.jpg

I pulled the weeds in the fenced row and found a few of the table dainty had sprouted. None of the gerkins did though so I will seed something else in those spots.

IMG_20220621_111037_HDR.jpg

Then it took me almost an hour to get through 2 rows of the beans since the weeds were so insanely thick. I had to search for little bean plants and found that most had been eaten by slugs. That is why we weed regularly, so the seedlings have a chance at growing without getting eaten.

IMG_20220621_120057_HDR.jpg

The sheep were happy to have the mass of greenery though.

IMG_20220621_120640_HDR.jpg

After noon I got suited up in my weedeating gear and headed out to deal with more waist high grass. I worked my way up the hillside and cleared our trail across to the sheep pen. The tree they dropped a few days ago is just down the hill.

IMG_20220621_132713_HDR.jpg

The trail down the hill got widened as I cut the brush back. It has gotten overgrown like the rest of the farm.

IMG_20220621_132855_HDR.jpg

Cut all around the studio and down to the fence line and around all the rocks.

IMG_20220621_132919_HDR.jpg
IMG_20220621_132929_HDR.jpg

The trail out by the gate had overgrown almost completely and I had to do a lot of vertical swings with the weedeater to cut back the bushes.

IMG_20220621_133839_HDR.jpg

All the grass cutting was so I could access the pile of rocks that I excavated from the garden this year. I had intended originally to just pile them all off to the side but found a really good use for them. The pile all got loaded and I drove it out to the road and backed right up to the wires.

IMG_20220621_141836_HDR.jpg

The tunnel for the creek has had a rough go of it over the years and is in a bit of disrepair. The one directional wall on the left has broken free and when we moved in was lying back against the hillside allowing water under and around it. I got it set upright years ago and a couple years back was able to get it locked back into the vertical position. This year the high water was again behind it but it left a good amount of soil and sand which is holding it nicely. The load of rocks got lobbed down from the bed of the truck above and filled in the area behind the directional wall.

IMG_20220621_142253_HDR.jpg
IMG_20220621_142859_HDR.jpg

The load of rock filled in almost fully the area and I managed to not knock the wall over with the rocks that I was throwing from about 20 feet up.

IMG_20220621_143607_HDR.jpg

This is the eroding area above the tunnel that I have to fill in with more of the rocks that are in the piles.

IMG_20220621_143616_HDR.jpg

I hope to have a wall of rock on the entire side of the tunnel in hopes of keeping it from ever washing out.

IMG_20220621_143622_HDR.jpg

The whole point of moving the rocks was to give me access to drive the deck materials to the studio. I loaded it all up and strapped it down for the 400 foot trip up the hill.

IMG_20220621_144524_HDR.jpg

I unloaded all the wood out of the way of where the deck will be built then made one more trip to bring up the pier blocks. I have to haul a bunch of hardware and tools up before I can get started on the deck build.

IMG_20220621_145515_HDR.jpg
IMG_20220621_145846_HDR.jpg

In the wood I pulled from the studio when renovating the roof I found a nice long board that I removed all the nails from before mounting it under the lean-to on the coop. To the board I fixed the 3 restraining cones that I got while we were in Montana in preparation for butchering soon. I am ordering another 4 to fill in to the left which will make life a lot easier for butchering. I am needing to find a pair of glass scissors that have the diamond shaped cutting edge so I can lop heads with it easier and more precisely than the machete.

IMG_20220621_162449_HDR.jpg

The irrigation got turned on finally for the gardens now that the rains have passed. They only need half the normal time right now but soon will be up to the full hour per zone.

Decided to get a fire going for the evening to try and burn through more of the garbage wood rounds. The boys kept at the splitting and they both managed to get the wedge through for splits.

IMG_20220621_171750_HDR.jpg

After dinner and right before soaking I got the trailer hooked up to the truck and everything loaded and ready for my trip to town this morning. It was mainly to drop empties for the brews this week but I had one barrel to pickup.

I also put in an order at Home Depot for our small a/c units and a half pallet of softener salt which I will go pickup today once they have the order ready. One a/c is for the studio and the other is for the pantry so we can run the freeze dryer this summer.

IMG_20220621_194527_HDR.jpg

The longest day of the year proved itself by staying light till well past 9pm. I had to wait a while for it to be dark enough for the birds to be ready for bed but ended up carrying all the turkeys to the huts from the trailer and the pallets where they had all perched.

IMG_20220621_201309_HDR.jpg

I have been to town already this morning and am waiting for the email that my order is ready so I can go pick it up. I will get gas on the way home then need to work on the studio a/c install first I think. I want to get the deck started,

I've not yet upgraded my Listnerds yet so only he one email a week right now. I'm figuring I'll give one of the tiers a try.

My weedeating is mostly done for now, as long as the rains stay way. I am about to order my DR Trimmer which I have been wanting for many years. It will allow me to clear out all along our creek and make it a usable space. Looks like you got a good bit done today and could do with a good !BEER

Hah! Love the little one working an axe bigger than him. Best kind of childhood ever.

@stryeyz isn't too pleased with it but I am fine. He has a handle on swinging it now and I doubt him doing much damage to himself. It really is how memories are made though. Hopefully he will remember learning to split wood as a kid like I do and have it be a good memory.

No doubt he'll remember! I was talking just today with someone about some of today's kids that don't know how to use tools. That will open huge job opportunities for anyone into home repair and other stuff say 20 years from now -- today's kids will have to hire someone to change a light bulb (through some fancy app of course).

Most everyone of my days is filled. One of the joys/curses of having a need to be doing, but also the farm requires a lot of upkeep.

(Edited)

I think most people would love farm life if they had a chance to live it for a while. It is a lot of work but super satisfying.

I've envisioned the deck so much that I am hoping it kind of falls together. The other decks sort of did so hopefully this one will follow suit.

Exactly. I have been trying to come up with a use for the piles of rocks and this is the perfect thing.
