Did you ever want to get push notifications on your mobile:

  • whenever there was some transaction in your wallet?
  • when your collateralized asset were about to get liquidated?
  • when your ENS domain was reaching its expiry date?
  • When ETH GAs prices were goes off the roof or slides down?

There are several similar instances of which we would like to get a timely alert. We can't trust our own memory for several trivial tasks but yet these trivial looking events get very significant if we were to miss them.

A couple of months back when I was mining KOIN on Koinos project, I wanted to know when my mining reward was being credited and how much ETH balance is in the wallet so that it can support future transactions. I was not able to keep an eye on the mining software all the time. Well, my Zerion wallet came to my rescue at that time. It would always send me push notifications for all inward and outward transactions for my Ethereum wallets.

But how about receiving such notifications for all Web 3 services?
In 2009, Apple made our life easier by inventing the push notifications for mobile. But Web 3 services were missing such a service.

Ethereum Push Notification Service (EPNS)

An India based venture is working on such a protocol which is going to make our life a lot easier. EPNS is a decentralized and platform agnostic push notification service. Any Web 3 service, dApps, smart contracts, DeFi project, wallet providers etc. can integrate EPNS protocol and create their own notification channel. EPNS is a decentralized and content-independent middleware. Users always get the option to subscribe and unsubscribe any channel.

Notification service can make our crypto communities engage more often. In fact, EPNS has designed incentivized notifications. A service provider may need to stake some LEND to earn interest from AAVE DeFi platform and that interest amount then could be distributed to all opt-in subscribers. Aave partnership makes this possible.

They also have very talented advisors on board like COO of Zapper, CEO of WazirX and Co-founder of Gitcoin.

I went through the list of existing channel and found the popular Indian crypto news media Coin Crunch India News channel for receiving alert about the latest happenings in the crypto industry. Other channels include BTC & ETH price tracker, ETH Gas price movement alerts and ENS expiry alert etc.

Although I connected on Ropsten Test Network, I get the idea that I'd need to pay GAS for transactions of subscribing and unsubscribing. If I need to do that once, it's okay. But it may get a little expensive for hit & trial attempts to find the right channel for one. But there is no doubt that this service will be very valuable for most of us.

Hope more and more services would like to integrate it soon!
Both Android & iOS apps and Web app for EPNS are already released.
