Hispaliterario 7: Nuestro Amigo El Elefante

— ¡Pliss! ¡Hey!

— ¡Perdona, no quise asustarte!

Hispaliterario 7: Our Friend The Elephant

— Pliss! Hey! Hello! — he hears Leonardo speaking to him, but at first, he ignores from where. While walking somewhat distractedly beside a large field covered with tall weeds, plants, and vegetation that has grown without much control, he stops when he hears again and insistently, that they are asking for some attention from inside this large thicket. Carefully, he approaches a group of plants that seem to form a natural wall, and with his hands, he opens a small space to observe. Suddenly, a large eye observes him as he peeks out and falls backward onto the sidewalk.

— I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you, please don't go,— he is urged from the bushes. Somewhat nervous, he sits up and observes where the voice is coming from, which he finds a bit curious.

— Who's there?— Leonardo asks from the sidewalk, still a little afraid, while observing the bushes that remain calm.

— My name is Dionisio, but everyone calls me Dioni. Can you help me?— they answer from inside the bush.

— How can I do it if I don't even know who you are?— Leonardo asks with curiosity, but, at the same time, with some fear.

Then, he notices how all the plants and weeds begin to move and sees a kind of protrusion similar to a large snake emerge. Instinctively, Leonardo moves away a little, only to discover that it is the trunk of a large elephant, which opens its way and shows its wide face in the undergrowth. The huge animal observes him with its big eyes and greets him:

— Hello, what's your name? — Leonardo hears the elephant ask him without any hesitation. Between frightened, nervous, and surprised, he answers:

— Hello, Leonardo, But how is it that you can talk? — still unable to believe that he is talking to an elephant in the middle of his way from work to home.

Among surprises, curiosity, laughter, and a lot of cordiality, the elephant tells him his story and how he was trapped in the jungle as a child, separated from his parents, taken to live far from his environment, first in a circus, where thanks to his great memory and the trust he gained with his keeper, he learned to read and speak. While there, he began to devise a way to return to his homeland. He told him how, when the circus discovered that he could talk, he was thrown out of the circus, since elephants in the circus do not talk, and he was taken to live in a zoo. There, he managed not to talk to anyone and at night, when the zoo was closed to the public, he escaped from his cage and went into the offices, where he managed to investigate how he could return to freedom. He knew that this was further south than where they were, but he had to go through the big city and he had been hiding in this big bush for a week, trying to figure out how to get through the city and get to the jungle without being seen, where he would finally be free. They talked for a long time and it was already night when Leonardo and Dionisio sealed a pact of friendship with an elephant trunk and handshake and decided that they would find a way to cross the city.

Already at home, very worried and without stopping to think about how he could help his friend the elephant, Leonardo approached his two little daughters and without thinking too much, he asked them:

— How would you do if you had to carry a big elephant all over the city without anyone knowing about it so that it would get to the other side where the jungle begins?— The girls looked at him, surprised by the question, looked at each other, and laughed. Then, with a big smile, the youngest one, Laura, 8 years old, tells him. Laura, 8 years old, tells him:

— That's very easy daddy, you just make him a costume and walk him little by little to the other side.— Her sister Lucia, a year older, adds:

— You just have to make sure that the disguise covers it completely, from the ears, the trunk, and even the legs, and then no one will notice that it is an elephant.

Their mother also listened and joined the conversation, and while they were having dinner, they came up with a great plan to hide an elephant and take it all over the city to the border where the jungle begins. You can imagine the look on their faces when, having completed the plan, Leonardo confessed to them that they had to put it into action immediately, since Dionisio, his friend, the elephant, trusted him to help him. After much laughter, not believing that what they were doing was real and that perhaps Leonardo had gone mad, the family was even more committed when, the next day, Leonardo took them to the big bush to introduce them to his friend the elephant. They got down to work and after completing many tasks, they built a large costume in the shape of vans.

A few days later, in the middle of the big city, there was a family composed of a father, a mother, and their two small daughters, "pushing" what looked like an old van. It was moving very slowly. Of course, it was a very heavy and old "van" and, at times, had to be pushed carefully. Many people came over to try to help. Leonardo thanked them for the gesture and, in many ways, managed to persuade those who tried. Occasionally, someone would succeed and join in helping to push, at which point Dionisio, hidden under the daring disguise of a pickup truck, would have to walk a little faster so as not to draw more attention to himself.

Somewhere along the road, very close to the border between the jungle and the city, a police officer stopped to observe something strange. What looked like the front hatch of an old pickup truck was open and a man with a large bucket was emptying what appeared to be food into it. As they approached, Leonardo and his family became alert. The curious officer asks:

— What are you putting in the engine?— Leonardo, while closing the hatch, puts a big smile on his face and answers:

— Oh This? It's fuel. It happens that this is a very special and unique engine, which works with water and biological waste and produces energy from the decomposition of natural elements — The officer looks at him with an astonished face and does not believe what he has just heard. He looks very curious and says:

— Wow, I have to see that engine! It's incredible!— Leonardo widens his smile and answers him:

— You don't want to do that officer, this engine is very fetid and gives off an unbearable smell— At that, what seems to be the sound of a big burp is heard, and then, something similar to a running engine, — Bruaaack! Ruuummm! Rum! Rum! Rum! Rum! Rum!— which is accompanied by an unpleasant smell. The officer catches the smell and immediately wrinkles his face.
— Ugh! It's horrible! You'd better keep moving, — and he leaves immediately. Watching him walk away, the whole family and Dionisio, hidden in his disguise, can't stop laughing.

After several hours of walking through it, Leonardo and his family arrive with the elephant Dionisio at the limits of the city and the jungle. After sharing, laughing, talking, and enjoying the great journey, Dionisio says goodbye to his great friends who have helped him to achieve his freedom. There is no lack of promises to visit him since it is logical that the elephant could not return to the city. Hoping that no elephant will ever again be subjected to slavery and separated from his natural environment, the family sees him leave and go into the jungle, where he can finally live in freedom and have a great adventure to tell his friends about.

Greetings, my dear and enthusiastic writers, readers, and friends of Hive Blockchain. A very special call for this month of August, @hispaliterario has presented to us. On the occasion of the celebration of World Elephant Day on August 12, I could not help but think that when we refer to elephants, we always think of those in captivity, whether in a zoo or circus. Well, at least that is my particular case. So I am very pleased to present this story, totally fictitious and perhaps very fanciful. I have always known that elephants are characterized by being very intelligent, noble, familiar, and with a very good memory. And I think I have condensed some of those characteristics in my humble entry. I hope it is to everyone's liking and especially to @charliefix and @gislandpoetic to whom I extend the invitation to participate. For full details, visit this post.

Lo he disfrutado mucho.

I was scared that they'll br caught. My heart almost dropped at the scene of the police officer, but the man and the elephant were quite brave to pull such a stunt.

I enjoyed your story.
