Splinterlands: End of Season for Me!

avatar

Any plan needs to be flexible enough to allow changes when the situation is different from expected.

At the beginning of the season, I expected to be playing every day of the season and optimize my ECR every day. For the most part, I did that.

But now, I saw an opportunity to play the end differently.

I already depleted my ECR to about 70% and CL2 was within reach.

So, I thought... OK, I'll push it to CL2 and take the last day of the season off.

Which went... almost as planned. I eventually reached CL2, but not until my ECR dropped within the 40-50% range.

That was a very high price to pay to reach CL2. With the new ranked rewards system, the difference between CL2 and CL3 is not as important as it was in the previous system, where it made the difference between 80 or 120 reward chests and starting from D2 instead of D3.

Now, the main benefit is that I will start next season from D2, with a very low chance of dropping to G1.

That and my ego being pumped, because I haven't reached CL2 for a long time.

image.png

Otherwise, next season I would have played for champ chests from CL3 too, and most likely my rewards would have been better for this EOS if I had continued to play minding my ECR level.

So, why did I choose to push it to CL2 after all, because it was a decision I took when ECR was still around 70%?

For two reasons:

  • because I don't want to play in gold, and this almost guarantees I won't drop back to gold
  • because I calculated that I'll only lose 24h of focus mission play on the last day of the season (tomorrow); on the 1st day of next season I'll continue to take my break to replenish ECR, but not the full 24h, so I'll still play the focus mission

At the beginning of this season, I thought the most important will be the season rewards. Turns out I was wrong.

I wasn't inspired enough to keep a record of my daily focus mission rewards, but without precise calculations, I believe I won more chests on the focus missions in total than I will for the season.

And that without depleting my ECR more than for 24h on any day other than today.

However, the numbers alone are not so relevant. I earned 12 champ chests on my focus mission yesterday (my record), but haven't won anything worth mentioning.

Here's where I think the new rewards system could be improved. We have the new 12 reward cards introduced together with the new system.

Isn't it worth playing for bronze or silver chests with a deck that can rank up much higher, to farm these new reward cards and upgrade them sooner than a diamond/champ account could? You'd be earning A LOT more bronze/silver chests if you play in higher leagues, regardless of how the reward structure is squeezed towards the higher chests.

I've seen enough people testing these waters, and I assume they wouldn't do it if it wasn't profitable.

Overall, the jury is still out after the first season post-new rewards, where I'm concerned. I haven't seen the season rewards yet, but generally, I am relatively disappointed by the rewards I received for the focus missions for champ chests. If we couple this with the drop in renting income, oh well...

What I find great about the new reward system is that starter cards don't win rewards anymore. And that was a huge milking venue.

But under the general crypto market conditions, maybe this is not the best time to judge performance within Splinterlands. Plus this was the first new-rewards season, so I believe many tested a lot during this season, bots are probably on stand-by, which probably affected the rental market.

I have been tracking. More focus chests than season chests.

But I am in silver (for Bronze)

So I wasn't wrong. I wonder if this was the intention.

But I am in silver (for Bronze)

Yeah, maybe that matters. But I played most of the season in Diamond for champ chests, and still have this impression. Too bad I wasn't tracking the daily focus chests.

I think so. It costs more points for each subsequent chest. Focus resets daily, while season chest costs more and more.

Check out my posts, I play in Diamond and Champion and I have documented the progress daily this season. (And accumulative chest counts)

Thanks! I will.

EDIT: Ah, not comparable. You played for diamond chests. I played for champion chests.

Congrats on CL2!

Good strategy to have a cushion in diamond. I think CL2 is a sweet spot, potentially avoided going against top CL1 players when the new season begins.

I may end the season in CL3.

Thanks! Yeah, that's one other reason why I take most of the 1st day off next season. Give some time to CL1 players to move up. Maybe almost 24h won't be enough. We'll see...

Everyone is waiting for the season awards to compare with the lower leagues, as it has become apparent that players can earn more chests on silver and bronze. I, too, wonder how the players in the higher leagues will be rewarded. Otherwise everyone will leave for the lower leagues...

Otherwise everyone will leave for the lower leagues...

That would be very disappointing. And exactly the opposite of what the declared intentions for this new system were.

I agree, well, we'll see tomorrow...

I am satisfied so far with the changes in the rewards system as far as playing both in Silver III and Bronze 1. I find the increase in the number of EOS and DF chests impressive. Just wondering why it's easier to increase the number of DF chests in the Bronze I league than in Silver III.

Yep, the new system seems very rewarding with lower leagues.

Just wondering why it's easier to increase the number of DF chests in the Bronze I league than in Silver III.

If you play for different types of chests, that's the reason.

So you mean as the player climbs higher, the more difficult it is to add more DF chests? I wonder then how difficult would it be in gold leagues and up?

It depends on what type of chests you play for and on what level you currently are.

Say you are playing for silver chests but you play in bronze now. It's more difficult to get chests than if you were in the silver league.

In reverse, if you play for bronze chests and you are in silver, you get chests much easier.

The "normal" is to play for silver chests when you are in the silver league.

I actually play four accounts, one in Silver III and three in Bronze I. So far in Silver 3, the highest number of DF chests I can get is six and I have now 30 chests to claim this EOS. In the case of Bronze I, 15 DF chests appear easy to get and so far I have 44 chests to claim in one account. That 150 EOS chests and 30 DF chests seem to require extraordinary hard work.

That 150 EOS chests and 30 DF chests seem to require extraordinary hard work.

If you are in a higher league than the league your chests are for your earn them much easier. Say you play in gold for bronze chests and do well. I'm pretty sure 30 DF and 150 SF are reached without problems. Not sure if they are worth it though. I thought there was no limit to DF, that would make it worth it. But with a limit, it's probably not worth it. It's better to play for higher league chests.

I am actually excited to see the difference in chest rewards this EOS compared to the previous one.

I'm glad for you!

I'm earning more than last season too. My expectations were probably a little bit unrealistic. But we'll see where the rewards and the rental market will find an equilibrium once the bots start playing again.

I thought the current change has already addressed that bot problem.

If you are talking about bots, they can't play only with the starter cards, but once they rent or buy cards and define the best strategy for them going forward, they will continue to play.

And I'm ok with them being around, as long as they don't have unfair advantages. Without bots playing the rental market crashed at the beginning of the season.

Curious about the pros and cons of bots. Still puzzled about it for I read a lot of complaints about bots causing problems in Splinterlands' economy.

The problem with bots and their owners is that when they find loopholes in a crypto/gaming economy, they exploit to the max.

Their value is they provide opponents all the time throughout the day in ranked play, and that they rent and, now, probably buy assets.

Yeah, I agree with that bot utility providing a ready opponent for the players. That's one good thing I heard about bots.

That exploitation to the max tells a lot about basic human nature.

I am all for letting new players earn some cards. There will be some farming but the max daily chest is 30. With 1/3 being cards the most cards someone will get is 10. 10 cards at .01 each is only $.10. Also packs are very rare at Bronze chest. I think it is best to be the top of any league. My breakeven calculations show I would need Gold 2 to earn equivalent dollar value to Silver 1. It all still revolves around having enough collection power to pick which league you play in. SPS staking on players will change all the dynamics again in a few seasons when it is implemented.

I didn't know there is a 30 cap on the number of chests you can earn daily. That's VERY good to disincentivize farming at lower levels.

I agree. That will probably change the gameplay again. But do we have an ETA for when it will come out?

The roadmap is showing Q2 2022.

image.png

So nothing specific and not announced yet.
I speculated a little in an article this week. https://peakd.com/hive-13323/@ijat/sps-player-staking

I expect it to be announced before the SPS airdrop ends next month.

I hope these dates remain valid because it's not mentioned in this broad-picture roadmap:

Good point I don't see it mentioned in the timeline you shared. There were hinting at something new in the AMA but left it vague enough to be anything. I'll still stack SPS to prep for Player staking.

Firstly, congratulations on reaching the Champion 2 league! That's awesome!

Secondly, I know that there is much speculation, strategies, and tactics regarding these new rules, but I'm kind of lazy to play around with them... lol... I will rather lose 1-2 seasons playing "regularly" at these moments than speculate for higher rewards... :)

So, I'm doing my focus mission, collecting season chests, and so far so good... I got into Diamond 1, which was my goal, and I will get more season rewards than I had with the old rules... I'm happy with that... :)

Thanks! Let's see how this reflects in my next season's results.

You played for Diamond chests, which given we spend the majority of time in diamond might be better. That's because I wasn't impressed by champ chests so far, except for the DEC rewards, that's where the multiplier shows its power.

For CL2, I would have gotten 120 chests in the old-style season rewards. Hard to beat that, but let's say these champ chests are better. Not much better from what I've seen from the focus chests, except for the DEC rewards.

But let's see if the chances bring out a better distribution with the season chests.

I don't know. It seemed a rather long one to me. Perhaps because before I used to take about a third of it off during EOS.

Great result on c2.

It should also help you to earn more focus points as you win matches based on your level.

I would usually have stopped when i crept over the line too but it's fun to keep going and see how high we can actually go.

Playing in Bronze and although the season started really bad for me it’s ending in a better note. I ended up having the same number of chests as with the old system !BEER

Congrats! Try to level up as much as possible. If you start higher at the beginning of the season, you should earn more chests.

Congrats on reaching CL2 and I believe that's the way to go. But you don't actually have to stay at CL2 for EOS, you just need to reach it once and then you can drop down and play in CL3 if you want. The snapshot now is higher league obtain and not league position at EOS.

I just restarted playing the game after a while and grinding for Novice chests in the Silver league can be very satisfying. I use satisfying vs rewarding as it's great fun opening 15+ chests daily, like a scratchie. But the chances of getting anything rewarding is almost nil, which is fine as that's expected. I believe I opened around 100+ daily chests and the best card I got was a rare and one triple digit DEC.

How much DEC do you get in one chest, on average? I expect that all the DEC you are getting would be more than sufficient to buy the common cards and potions that I am getting. So I think for players who own lots of cards, it would be better to push for a higher league position then to grind it out in the lower leagues and rent their cards out.

I thought about that too. But not sure about that. My biggest DEC chest was 7k, and I had one of 3k. Other than that I think all of them were below 1k.

And by the way. I only had one GF (common or rare) and one legendary, so nothing spectacular. And a pack. And we are talking about over 70 champ chests (not sure about the exact number because I didn't track them)

Guess it wasn't fantastic as compared to the old system, less cards it seems. But what was the DEC rewards like pre-revamp? Surely you guys weren't getting 100+ DEC in a chest regularly!

No! The DEC rewards are definitely improved. Even though outrageous returns like 5k+ per chest are rare (in my case).
