My first day on Splinterlands - Bought the Spellbook and Unearthed a Rare Card

As a crypto newbie, I am fascinated by all facets of the world of blockchain technology. In the quest to learn more about everything crypto and blockchain, I started playing games that are powered by blockchain. My first venture was Alien Worlds, which right now is quite far from being a playable game (in fact it's more like a faucet with token and NFT rewards). My second, is Splinterlands.

Now a bit of warning before delving into it: I am not really a big gamer at heart. But because of the blockchain nature of this game, and many people raving about it, I've decided to give it a go.

Getting into the game

Splinterlands is powered by the Hive blockchain. If you have a Hive account, you can log in and play this game pretty easily. If not, you can make a free account to play. It is best to use a Referral Link as you will receive a random card upon sign up.

From the get go, I have to say Splinterlands has a huge learning curve compared to Alien Worlds. I mean it's an actual game with game play, strategy and a lot of things to do, which can be a deterrent for new players such as myself. The main page already looks complicated to me but it does get better as you play a bit.

Not exactly free to play

Maybe I missed the memo, but the game is not exactly free to play. I mean if you want to earn rewards you must purchase the official $10 Summoner’s Spellbook, but you can always play for free (but what's the fun if you can't earn any rewards right?)! The Spellbook allows you to complete Daily Quests, earn Season Rewards, compete in tournaments etc.

I feel that in order for me to have the motivation to keep playing the game, I have to buy the Spellbook. Especially since I feel like I will be able to get that $10 initial investment back through rewards or writing about my experience on Splinterlands.

A few clicks later, transaction approved through Paypal and my account was officially upgraded! Woohoo!

Quest Time

Now that my account is upgraded, the Quest section on the Battle page is also unlocked. There will be a new quest daily which looks something like this:

Now because you have to win 5 ranked battles, it is a bit of a daily grind and forces you to actually play and learn more about the game. For example, I learnt a lot about the Water Splinter by completing this quest.

Completing a quest will unlock the Loot Chest which contains rewards that might come in different forms:

I feel that at the start, when I'm in the lower leagues i.e. Bronze, it is a bit easier to win battles since everyone is pretty much new and still learning the game. Some people end up forfeiting which is still a win, and some people seem like they have really good cards for Bronze league as well. So all in all it takes me about 30 minutes to an hour to actually complete the daily quest.

1 x Loot Chest Rewards

After winning 5 ranked battles, I was so excited to open the loot chest. I didn't have much expectation given I'm at such a low level, and the probability is against me. I clicked...and behold. I got a rare card! Efreet Elder who is at level 2.

Now I have no idea what this means or what I can even do with this card (if someone knows can you please comment below haha). But now I'm really pumped to do the daily quests. They got me.

What's next

There's so much I need to learn about Splinterlands because right now I'm basically doing a trial and error and seeing what works. I'll be doing the daily quest to try my luck and earn some cards. It seems like a fun enough game for me to actually stick around for the long run (I'm looking at you Alien Worlds XD). If anyone has any suggestions or tips/tricks for a newbie, please share in the comments below!

Nice catch on your first Loot Chest, don't take that card as a reference what to expect going forward though. Have fun learning the game while building your own card collection. If you keep up blogging like this, it will for sure help you advance much quicker. For as far as more info on the game goes...

Good Luck!

What luck! Gold cards are difficult to get from rewards. Gold AND blue rarity makes it even harder.

I actually had no idea! I just thought getting any card is rare but now I know gold foils are even more rare! 🥳
