I Think I Hate It, I Think I Love It!
It's no secret that I'm a big fan of @Splinterlands
It's been one of the sneaky good moves I've made in my crypto journey and while there has been plenty of ups and downs over the past few years, I'm as bullish as ever about the game.
Side note: Did you see the cool new plush toys they created for 2 of their most famous characters?

I'm telling my wife it's for the kids, but let's be serious...I plan on snuggling up to Yodin for the years to come LOL
Anyways, the game made a massive change over the past week when it comes to the rewards distribution.
Before the changes, it was pretty straight forward...Do your daily quests, get a bunch of rewards chests. Of course, we can never have good things in crypto, and the bots and abusers showed up to game the system for their benefit. The Splinterlands team knew this was an issue and have been trying to find a solution that would...
Keep players engaged
Reward those that invest in both assets and time
Limit the 'gaming' of the system
And with these new changes they made, they hope to have accomplished it.
Here's where I stood less than a week ago when it came to the new rewards system...
I really didn't like it.
I am not what you call, a big time Splinterlands player. I got attracted to the game from a collectors point of view and didn't really start playing it until about a year ago. What I did like about the experience is that I would spend about 10-15 minutes (maybe a few minutes more) each day...Do my daily quests and get rewarded for it.
Simple. Easy.
I wasn't trying to become a Champion in the game, I just enjoyed the experience and was in the habit of collecting those reward chests every day.
It all changed with the new rewards system because now...The way to win is to play more. Gone are 'daily rewards' and now we're introduced to 'Focus Points'. Every 24 hours, you get one splinter to focus on and get as many wins as you can, which translates into rewards chests.
And I get it, they want to keep their players engaged, reward those that put in the time but I couldn't help but feel that the casual gamer would be left out in the cold.
Here's what I got in Gold 2 league, after about 20-30 matches...
Not exactly worth about an hour or so of my time...
But the way it's explained, your account level will ultimately determine how many rewards you receive. So the more you win, the more chests you can unlock each day. Which again, is fine for the dedicated gamer...But for casual folks...The jury was out!
I'm still a raving fan boy of this game, so I decided to keep playing this week...
Each day, I got more and more rewards chests and finally today, I got myself a brand spanking new Legendary pull from my gaming...
Now that's worth the time invested!
Of course I'm not going to pull a Legendary rewards card each time I do my daily focus, however I 'get' what they are doing now...
It's SUPER addicting to be a match or two away from jumping up to the next number of chests you win. I found my Energy Capture Rate go the lowest it's ever been because over the past few days, I haven't been able to stop playing LOL and it'll be very interesting to see what their metrics look like in a few weeks after these changes...
Yeah when it first got introduced...I hated it. I thought the casual gamer won't enjoy the experience and might move on to something else, and that very well may be the case. However a few days after really putting in the work to grind for more chests, I completely understand how it's set up and to hook players into investing more time (and potentially money) into this game.

I'm still not sure. I'm in the lower Bronze League so it's always been a slow slog to earn rewards. I'm bummed about not playing for daily rewards. I am definitely a casual gamer so this new system does make time in game more important. Which makes my lack of time to be in game a problem.
What I do like is that I can earn a tiny tiny amount of DEC when winning during focus matches. So, the game play is still rewarding. I also like that each day's points adds up for season rewards.
I'd say the jury is still out. I'll miss some of what made the game easy to play and predictable. But I also like this new model that has me on my toes. Only time will tell. Happy gaming!
That's a point I never realized until recently...THose daily points stack for total season points too. And never go backwards for your rewards!

With a few strategic rentals, I am at 6-7 chests per day and season chests are at 35 already (I would have gotten 22 chests at the end of season in the old system).
I'm on track to 80 or 90 chests. That would be four times of my old earnings. I'm content :).

I like it though I am puzzled why it is easier to increase the number of DF chests in the Bronze I league than in the Silver III. I like it for the DF chests rewards in Bronze I are like prior 3 EOS rewards combined. Curious if there is really anyone who can do 30 DF chests per day and 150 chests for the whole season. The rewards change is insane. 🤣
I’m on pace for about 50 rewards but the end of the season. But it’s around what I would get normally. The daily has gone down a lot.

Really? The change has a different result in Bronze 1 League. Before the three Bronze accounts that I am playing, I just let them cross until they reach the 9 guaranteed chests for the season and then I would stop playing for the DQ chests are not worth the time spent. So usually, I was just focusing on my Silver III account. But now, it's different. The rewards in the Bronze I league jumped up several times. It's also good that the credits are removed.

i start with a novice account and i blog about the daily progress. Day 5 I got 26 daily chests. I of course can hit 30 but that would drain a lot of the ECR. The chest requirements for EOS grow exponentially. You can see my blog to see the progression.

At first I was quite disapointed with the new system. I totally saw why the changes were relevant but I saw my income potential drop drastically. I played about 30 minutes with my main account to get one single Champions Chest and was not very happy about it... until I opened it and got 24'000 DEC in one signle chest lol.

Good stuff @jongolson it is the same as any time spent on anything if you get value out of it then it is worth spending time on for you.
If you are making an income too then that is even better.
I play every now and then but i could not justify spending the time needed to really get anywhere in the game it takes me too long to win.
Not even sure the game is my cup of tea to be honest, i like games that are a bit more button bashing.

I like the potential of the new rewards. I am earning more in ranked DEC rewards with each match than I did in the past. The daily rewards was always a challenge for me until I got up to about 1200 in rating. I found the daily focus to be the same way. I could win matches but just not enough in the daily or focus splinter. The first few days I received only 1 chest every other day. Today is the first day that I will receive more chest in the daily focus than I received from the daily quest. I am hoping these chests prove to be better rewards. Also, I have already earned more chests than I would have earned for the season end under the old reward system. So if nothing else, I will have many more chests to open each season. I am very impressed that the development team keeps pushing and provides players something new each month or two. It keeps game play very interesting and I do not get bored with this game at all. Congrats on the legendary!
With me being a Silver league player, I have learned two things in this new system. I have to rent the starter cards I was using before so that I earn my full rewards for each win and if I want to win consistently, I need to rent a few level 2 and level 3 cards, as well. So far, I have been able to earn enough each day to cover these rentals, but it's a juggling act finding cards what fall within what I earned from the previous focus and what will help me win in today's focus. Point being, not only does it take more time to play the game, it takes more prep time for each focus. On the flip side, where I was winning 2 - 4 chests each day with the Daily Quests and 9 - 15 for the season, I now win 6 - 8 Focus chests each day and I've already earned 20 chests this season and it's not even half over. Moral of the story, I have to spend more time playing (is this a bad thing?), but the rewards are greater (which means my collection grows faster). So far, I am leaning more on the side of it being a win.
I got that nice legendary the other day, it would be nice if that was the rewards each time lol

I think they are positive changes but you're not going to see the results of it right away it's going to take a little time. Those chests should become worth more and more as time moves on. My rentals have actully been higher and I might soon pull them all and rework the numbers as well since DEC is trading at it's peg again compared to before.
The things I don't like are it tells me I can earn up to 30 chests a day but in reality that's not possible and doesn't even come close. I pick up about 4-5 a day. To me that's like a demotivational factor and I'm wondering if it is for others as I feel like I'm doing something wrong not coming anywhere near the 30 a day.

I am dealing with the same thing as far as capture rate goes. The problem is they use capture rate as part of the calculation in focus points. I haven't been too impressed by the rewards so far, but I honestly think I am not in the right league. I think I was playing above my level as far as my deck is concerned. I've been in since the kick starter and I really wish I would have held onto some of my older cards that I sold before the big boom. Came here via Listnerds!
Apparently, the higher the league or how 'attached' your account is to the league you should be in, the better the rewards. IN gold, I was getting nothing. Now in diamond, i'm getting better rewards.

Interesting. I get about four diamond chests per day and the rewards have been horrible with the exception of one day.
The trouble they had, people would 'sit' in certain leagues and never progress...this makes people, sit in the leagues their accounts should be at.

I am not what you call someone who can invest lots of money to have those awesome cards, I have a silver level account when it comes to collection points. But usually playing the bronze level (I rent out some cards). Playing for credits and at most 1 daily chest was not worth it for me in the bronze league.
With this change, I can have more rewards every day! Yeah, I was hooked again ... I really love it! And yeah, I get it that higher league players need time to adjust, and feel that they took their big rewards away. But for the small players, it's like playing yourself into heaven! Finally, also the small players get rewarded for time and dedication! For a while I felt like "Pay-2-Earn" should be the name, now again I feel like "Play-2-Earn" is back.
The biggest win for me, is seeing those season totals rise. And they never go backwards. So you just wanna keep stacking chests for the entire season.

The new reward system focuses more on how often you win now. In the first few days, I think I was getting like 3-4 chests, but the chest number is up to like 6-9 chests for around 40 matches a day for me.
