Ecency! | Data On Posts, Comments, Users | Dec 2022

avatar

Ecency is probably the most comprehensive Hive dapp with web site, desktop application and phone app. Its phone app is the most used app for a general Hive experience with notification system and all. They have a relatively easy build sign un process and creating Hive accounts with just a mail verification.

Ecency has been around for a long time, and it has went trough a process of rebranding when the Hive fork happened from its previous version eSteem. Ecency has been building for years with no hype around the app, but just providing a nice experience, especially on the mobile side.

Let’s take a look at some of the data.

https://ecency.com/

Here we will take a look at the activity on the platform, the overall number of posts and comments, and the number of users. The top content creators for the last month will be presented as well.

The period that we will be looking at is from the creation of Hive, Apr 2020 till now.

Posts

First let us see the number of posts coming from the Ecency.

Here is the chart.

An overall downtrend in 2022 in the numbers of posts, especially in the first half. We can see that in the summer there was a small increase in the numbers of posts and a drop now again.
The year started with almost 1000 posts, a drop to 600 in May, then an increase to 800 in September and a drop to around 700 now.

We can say that from the summer we have almost constant numbers of posts, that is good having in mind the continuous decrease in the prices in crypto.

Comments

The chart above was only about posts.
What about comments?

Here is the number of comments made per day from Ecency.

This is an interesting chart. The number of comments has been going up in 2022, opposite than the number of posts.

At the start of the yeat there was around 5k comments and now there is 7k comments. Almost 50% increase in engagmet.

Posts and Comments`

When we combine the posts and comments on one chart we get this.

The overall activity is up. Even with the number of posts declining, because comments are growing strong, the overall activity is up.

When we plot the numbers on a monthly timeframe we get this.

A similar trend as in the previous charts with a clearer representation of the growth in the year.

Authors

How about the numbers of the authors on the Ecency. How many accounts are posting?

Here is a chart for the monthly numbers of accounts posting.

The number of MAUs for Ecency has dropped but mostly in the first month of the year. Since then, the numbers are almost constant.

The numbers of MAUs have been at 5.8k in January and in November it is at 4.2k.
Note that these are accounts that have posted or commented, meaning both activities included.

Next the number of unique authors that posted from Ecency. These are authors that posted directly through the frontend.

The number of unique Ecency authors is showing continuous growth.

There is a total of 23k unique authors that have used Ecency to post. In the last months there has been more than 650 new unique authors trying the frontend for the first time.

Authors That Posted The Most

Here is the rank of the authors that posted the most in November 2022.

The top accounts have posted almost 100 posts in a month from Ecency.

Overall Ecency is holding quite well during the bear of 2022. The number of posts has dropped but the number of comments has increased, resulting in overall growing activity. The number of monthly active users MAUs has dropped in the first month of the year and since then has remained around the same level with around 4k accounts making post or a comment per month.

All the best
@dalz

Interesting data and analisys as always!
Your data perfectly reflect my use of ecency
For writing posts I use Peakd which is in my opinion the best editor for writing articles.
Also for wallet operations I prefer Peakd although in the last few months the ecency wallet has improved a lot and the functionality to request SPK tokens is very useful
For writing comments I mainly use ecency from both desktop and smartphone.
Also for comments there is the incentive of points that can be used for the Boost feature that other front ends do not have.

What's missing in Ecency editor that you would like to see?

Hi @ecency

First of all thank you for creating ecency which is my absolute first choice for mobile and interacting on Hive blockchain even from desktop.

In the past I happened to accidentally delete parts of the text of a post I was writing and on ecency I had to rewrite the part of the post .
In Peakd there are undo and redo buttons, which for people who write posts that are often long like mine posts are very important, because if I misplace a link or accidentally delete something I can go back.
Adding the undo and redo keys would be a great addition and that is why I never use the ecency editor to write posts.

I did not expect to be in this ranking, I am very happy because it means that I am growing well here on Hive. I use ecency because, apart from being able to take advantage of the ecency points, I like the platform itself.

I came across your post almost by chance, having found it in the hot topics section. I noticed that you didn't tag users, I have a question which is more of a curiosity: is it your choice not to tag users?

Thank you anyway for pointing out this activity of mine, I am very grateful :)

Ecency is truly the most convenient to use for hive activities... I can open the app more than 10times a day😂

I like the interfaces that Ecency provides, but I am feeling frustrated by the Boosting system. It rejects most of my efforts to boost my content and there never seems to be any reason why. It makes engaging through Ecency seem pointless to be honest. I am disappointed about this, but must admit that my interest in the platform is pretty proportional to how many of my posts it allows me to boost (which is nearly 0 these days).

Other than that, it is a nice dashboard and seems more reliable than Leo at picking up notifications. I just wish they could fix the boosting futility.

Ecency curators balance out the amount of boosts that we give out with the amount of voting power Ecency has. With the low price of Hive, we are not able to give out as many boosts as we did when the price was higher. Hope the price goes back up soon, ask for minimum boosts, and keep trying!

Thanks for trying to help, but I think I do not understand. Are we both talking about boosting my posts, for example, with my Ecency points? When I select boost for my posts, a curator then provides that boost? It is not automatic?

All posts boosted on Ecency are reviewed by curators. When you boost your post goes into a queue to be reviewed. If you do not receive a curation vote, your POINTS are refunded after 24 hours

I had no idea that was how it worked. My poor little posts are not worthy :( haha jk
!MEME we are not worthy

It's not automatic. There is an approval process. Think of this as a manual curator. Lately I too have a hard time getting it to work when I use too many points, try using less. 😉

Thanks! I will! I also will write a quick post about this, because I am only just now understanding a bit about how it works :)

It is really interesting to see the data laid out this way! The Ecency Leaderboard keeps track of the who is making all those comments each day it's fun to see who is racing their friends to be at the top!

I use ecency everyday for my comments because that way i earn ecency points to boost my content to get more visibily, that is a great incentive for engagement, i guess that's why in the charts we see more comments than posting

Congratulations @dalz! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain And have been rewarded with New badge(s)

You received more than 39000 HP as payout for your posts, comments and curation.
Your next payout target is 40000 HP.
The unit is Hive Power equivalent because post and comment rewards can be split into HP and HBD

You can view your badges on your board and compare yourself to others in the Ranking

My previous @v4vapp proposal has expired. I have a new one which is running but unfunded right now. I'm still running @v4vapp and all my other services but I may have to increase the 0.8% fee to 2.0% if I continue to be unfunded.

Please consider asking your friends to vote for prop #244 or consider unvoting the HBD stabilizer explained below.

For understandable reasons in the current crypto climate it is harder to get funded by the DHF, I accept this so I'm asking a wider audience for help again. I will also redraft this proposal with more details (coming soon). I'm also looking for other funding sources.

Additionally you can also help with a vote for Brianoflondon's Witness using KeyChain or HiveSigner

If you have used v4v.app I'd really like to hear your feedback, and if you haven't I'd be happy to hear why or whether there are other things you want it to do.

  1. The bar to be funded is set by the HBD Stabilizer, the more votes that has, the more votes @v4vapp needs to be funded. If you want to reconsider supporting that proposal and unvote it, that would also help me (and others so you have to weigh this choice.)
