Growing Cherry Tomatoes, Lemon And Mango

avatar

I must warn you that what you are about to see might not be pretty. You see, for the first time in my life, I'm about to grow some plants! On LeoFinance we always put a disclaimer like "this is not financial advice...", so this is definitely not gardening advice. Instead, every comment telling me what I'm doing wrong would be highly appreciated.

So here goes nothing! I am planting lemon, mango and cherry tomatoes. Right now they are in very different stages. Tomatoes have surfaced, lemon hasn't yet emerged and mango seed is in the closet.

Cherry tomatoes

I don't know what "brand" they are but they were more of an orange color than red. After I ate them I took about 8 little seeds and planted them in one pot. I made about 2 cm deep holes with my finger in the soil, covered them, and gave them some water. Then I put this thin plastic foil tightly to cover the pot and made small holes into the foil to create a greenhouse effect.

This is a picture taken about a week and a half ago when I had just removed the plastic foil. If you look closely you can see that some of them are still emerging from the soil while others have already opened their leaves.

This one is taken today. I took three of them and moved them to their own jars. At first, it seemed that they didn't survive the moving process but after some sun and water they cheered up. I think it's a bit ironic that one is in the pizza sauce jar. In a jar where maybe its grandparents ended up.

Lemon

I think I planted maybe three lemon seeds in this pot. I googled some tips and there was some advice to put the pot somewhere in a cold place out of the sunlight for a week or two. I also made the plastic foil thing for this one. I'm very excited to see if it will start to grow!

Mango

Believe me, it was a really tough job to get the mango seed out of this shell. It was like an oyster or something like that. I had to cut one end off the shell and twist it open with a knife.
Finally, I got my hands to the actual seed and was told by google to wrap it in a wet paper and put the package in a plastic back, and put the whole thing somewhere dark and cold. So I put it in my closet.

I took it out only for the photo session and tested that it was still moist. Sorry about the bad and shady picture by the way! I'm really not sure about this one... or that color. We'll just have to wait and see so it's back to the closet for a week.

I think I'll do a follow-up post, let's say in two months, to show you how they have grown and which ones have survived. All in all this has been very relaxing so far!

Thank you for reading!

Thank you! I'll take good care of them. I was thinking about the glass jars, they are probably not the best because of their form...

It’s interesting to see your planting journey.
I’m not so good at planting so I can’t give some advice 😅

Does it take so much time to plant and take care of it?
The mango tree... it's kinda regretting but maybe next time you'll know what to do?

Tomatoes grow really fast but mango and lemons are slower. I haven't yet given up my hopes on mango... but I think I might have damaged it when I was opening the shell. But yeah, next time I'm wiser.

You are off to a good start. It won't be too long until you have tomatoes but it will probably be a few years for the lemons and mangos. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! I read the same about lemons. Few years. As for the mango, it won't bare any fruits because I live in Finland...LOL! Well, that's what I read but we'll see.

Best of luck with your little garden. Home grown tomatoes are my favorite. I wait less than patiently for the end of August for them to be at the Farmers' market.

HEY @brando28

Love this, I'm excited for your update. Please keep us all posted on them.

I used to grow everything when I was a kid. I was a little obsessed with it. But need to start again now, but I have been travelling lots, so once more settled I definitely will.

I have followed you, to stay updated on these. 😄
