Trading Places: a Christmas comedy that makes you reflect

Like every Christmas Eve, it has now become customary for me to watch the movie Trading Places, which has been broadcast on TV for a couple of decades now and I have never failed to watch it. This tradition stems from a passion that has amassed me and my friends for 80's comedy and Eddie Murphy has always been an actor I've always liked, making files that are certainly not as intense as pathos but extremely relaxing and fun, and that's exactly what it is. that I look for in the movies, lightheartedness.

As I was telling you, when we were younger, about 20/25 years ago, we used to get together every night on Christmas Eve to watch the film together and we kept this tradition until a few years ago, when then our lives got a little 'away to dedicate ourselves to our new families. Yet we have kept the tradition of continuing to look at it with the same enthusiasm as many years ago.

The film tells the life of two men, deeply different: Louis Winthorpe III, a wealthy broker employed by a large company of the Duke brothers, and Billie Ray Valentine is, instead, a homeless man, moreover insolent and cheater. One day the two clash in a trivial and fortuitous street clash and the Dukes decide to bet 1 dollar that by reversing the roles even a poor beggar can be successful. And so in a few hours the Duke brothers organize everything in mini details and promote Valentine as a broker and Louise plunges her condition and loses all her wealth, having as her only friend Ophelia, a young prostitute who had been hired to further discredit him, and who now, feeling partly responsible for what happened, she takes a liking to him, helping him to extricate himself from the slums of society.

It is not long before both Louis Winthorpe and Valantine discover that they are victims of the Duke brothers' bet and thus study a revenge that will cost the bankruptcy of Duke & Duke, the billionaire company created by the brothers and become a reference for all the big investors, will bring back in vogue the talented broker, accompanied by his former beggar partner but who has proven to have skills in the financial sector, supported by Ophelia and the inseparable butler Coleman.

Why did the film become a Christmas cult? The whole story takes place in the middle of the Christmas period and the film, although it is a comedy, really leaves a lot of food for thought on the capitalist society of the 80s but I think we can easily expand the concept to today. Valantine's story teaches us to never give up even when the situation we are experiencing is dramatic and sad, life sooner or later offers you a way out, you just have to be ready to exploit it. Louis's story, on the other hand, reminds us of how essential it is to be modest, even if you are in high social positions, because life can be really mocking and can suddenly plunge you into the deepest darkness.

It is also essential to surround yourself with true friends, those who love you regardless of your social condition because in times of need they are the ones who can help you get out of the darkest times

Come ogni vigilia di Natale, è ormai diventato consuetudine per me guardare il film Una poltrona per due, trasmesso puntualmente in TV da ormai un paio di decenni ed io non ho mai mancato di guardarlo. Questa tradizione nasce da una passione che ha accumulato me ed i miei amici per la commedia anni 80 ed Eddie Murphy è sempre stato un attore che mi è sempre piaciuto, realizzando file sicuramente non intensi come pathos ma estremamente rilassanti e divertenti, ed è esattamente quello che cerco nei film, spensieratezza.

Come vi stavo raccontando, quando eravamo più giovani, circa 20/25 anni fa, ci riunivamo ogni sera della vigilia di Natale per guardare assieme il film e abbiamo mantenuto questa tradizione fino a qualche anno fa, quando poi le nostre vite si sono un po' allontanate per dedicarci alle nostre nuove famiglie. Eppure abbiamo mantenuto la tradizione di continuare a guardarlo con lo stesso entusiasmo di tanti anni fa.

Il film narra della vita di due uomini, profondamente diversi: Louis Winthorpe III, un ricco broker dipendente di una grossa società dei fratelli Duke, e Billie Ray Valentine è, invece, un senzatetto, per giunta insolente e imbroglione. Un giorno i due si scontrano in un banale e fortuito scontro in strada ed i Duke decidono di scommettere 1 dollaro che invertendo i ruoli anche un povere mendicante può avere successo. E così in poche ore i fratelli Duke organizzano tutto nei mini dettagli e promuovono Valentine come broker e Louise precipita la sua condizione e perde tutte le sue ricchezze, avendo come unica amica Ophelia, una giovane prostituta che era stata assoldata per screditarlo ulteriormente, e che adesso, sentendosi in parte responsabile dell'accaduto, lo prende in simpatia aiutandolo a districarsi nei bassifondi della società.

Non passa molto tempo quando sia Louis Winthorpe che Valantine scoprono di essere vittime della scommessa dei fratelli Duke e così studiano una vendetta che costerà il fallimento della Duke&Duke, la compagnia miliardaria creata dai fratellie e diventata un riferimento per tutti i grandi investitori, riporterà in auge il talentuoso broker, accompagnato dal socio ex mendicante ma che ha dimostrato di avere abilità nel settore finanziario.l, supportati da Ophelia e dall'inseparabile maggiordomo Coleman.

Perché il film è diventato un cult natalizio? Tutta la vicenda si svolge nel pieno periodo natalizio ed il film, seppure sia una commedia, lascia davvero molti spunti di riflessione sulla società capitalista degli anni 80 ma credo si possa tranquillamente espandere il concetto ad oggi. La storia di Valantine insegna a non arrendersi mai anche quando la situazione che stiamo vivendo è drammatica e triste, la vita prima o poi ti offre una via d'uscita, bisogna solo essere pronti a sfruttarla. La storia di Louis invece ci ricorda quanto sia fondamentale essere modesti, anche se si occupano posizioni sociali alte, perché la vita sa essere davvero beffarda e in modo repentino può farti precipitare nel buio più profondo.

Inoltre è fondamentale circondarsi di veri amici, quelli che ti amano a prescindere dalla tua condizione sociale perché nel momento del bisogno sono loro che potranno aiutare ad uscire dai periodi più bui
