Introduction to Rising Star Game for Beginners + EGO: Effects and Solutions

Hive is a large ecosystem of projects, applications (Dapps) and communities.
Splinterlands is the most popular game built and developed on the Hive blockchain right now and it's also my favorite blockchain-based game but there are other games developed on the Hive blockchain and among my favorites is also Rising Star.

About two months ago my friend @coccodema asked me for advice on how to cancel the effects of Ego in the Rising Star game.
Every promise is a debt and must be kept, so the main topic of this post will be Ego.
In this post you will also find a short introduction to the game for those who do not know Rising Star yet.

Brief Introduction to Rising Star

What is Rising Star

Rising Star is a fun and easy to play game.
The purpose of the game is to create a music band and become a music star.

image.png

Rising Star is a game that I have classified as "No Risk" (Free to Play) because it does not require any kind of initial investment!

Rising Star is an NFT game and in order to advance faster within the game and to earn more rewards it is possible to purchase cards from the Rising Star marketplace but purchasing cards from the marketplace is not necessary to start playing and is not necessary to start earning game rewards.
In fact, the player who registers on Rising Star can immediately carry out the first mission of the game, which is called "Illegal Busking" and which allows him to receive as a reward a quantity of STARBITS tokens (the native tokens of the game).

Requirements and How to Login

image.png

STARBITS tokens

The native tokens of the Rising Star game are the STARBITS tokens.
Rising Star players receive STARBITS tokens as a reward for completing missions in the game.
STARBITS tokens are also second-level tokens on the Hive blockchain and can be transferred, bought, sold from the following sites:

image.png

Today November 20th the value of 1 STARBITS token is:

  • 0.00027 SWAP.HIVE (Highest BID)
  • 0.00028 SWAP.HIVE (Lowest Ask)

image.png

Dollar value is $0.00029
1000 STARBITS tokens = $0.29

image.png

In the following image you can see the STARBITS token chart (November 20, 2021)

image.png

The Missions

Missions are the main part of the Rising Star game because they allow you to earn STARBITS tokens.
There are missions that do not earn STARBITS tokens but are important for unlocking new missions or obtaining game cards.

You can access the Missions section of the Rising Star game in two different ways:

  • from the Rising Star Home Page by clicking on START A MISSION as indicated by the arrows in the following image
    image.png
  • by clicking on the chronometer symbol at the top left if you are inside one of the game sections as indicated by the arrow in the following image.
    image.png

Mission Requirements

Most of Rising Star's missions have 4 requirements to meet, and some missions in more advanced areas also have an additional requirement (possession of a specific card).

A new player can immediately play the first mission of the Home Town zone, which has the following requirements:

image.png

  • image.png minimum number of Fans.
  • image.png Minimum Level to carry out the mission
  • image.png amount of time needed to complete the mission
  • image.png minimum amount of energy.

Energy

The first mission requires 15% energy.
The energy available in the Rising Star game is indicated by the energy bar (image below).

image.png

The energy is recharged by 1% every 5 minutes.
This means that it takes 500 minutes (precisely 8 hours and 20 minutes) to fully recharge from 0.

The Zones

In the Mission section of the Rising Star game there are Zones.

image.png

There are 4 different Zones: Home Town, Local Gig Circuit, County Tour and Country Tour.

image.png

Each zone has a list of missions that you can perform and each mission has different entry requirements.

In each zone, as the mission requirements increase, so does the reward you can get.

The more missions you complete, the more STARBITS tokens you will earn.

image.png

The more missions you complete, the more experience points (XP) you will earn and your level in the game will increase.

image.png

The more missions you complete, the more your EGO score will increase.

image.png

I take the Saturday Headline mission from the Home Town area of the Rising Star game as an example.

image.png

The player who completes the Saturday Headline mission receives:

  • a random amount of STARBITS tokens within the following range [min 350 - max 1425].
    image.png

  • an amount of 127 experience points (XP)
    image.png

  • 14 EGO points
    image.png

STARBITS tokens and XP points are rewards, but EGO points are not, because EGO is an element that only brings negative effects and must be kept under control.

What is Ego

The Ego is a negative element in the Rising Star game because it has the power to reduce the maximum number of STARBITS that can be earned from each mission.

image.png

Rising Star cards can have one to a maximum of four of the following attributes:

  • FANS
  • SKILL
  • LUCK
  • IM

For example, the R4 Female Rapper card has the following attributes:

  • FANS: 50
  • SKILL: 200
  • LUCK: 4
  • IM: 3

image.png

Each Rising Star player has an EGO score that depends on the total FANS attributes of their cards and the total number of temporary FANS points (FANS drunks) gained from completing missions.

More precisely the EGO value is given by the sum of the total number of FANS (sum FANS attributes of the cards + sum number of temporary FANS obtained by completing missions) plus the total number of EGO points obtained by completing missions.

EGO = Total FANS (fixed FANS + temporary FANS) + Total EGO points from missions

You can view your EGO score within the Missions section of Rising Star.
The EGO bar indicates the negative effect EGO has in percentage terms.

image.png

For example, I have an EGO of 18%, which means that the maximum reward of all my missions is reduced by 18%.
If you place the mouse pointer on the EGO bar you can see the EGO Score instead.

image.png

The negative effects of Ego

The EGO is an element that comes into play after registration and therefore does not affect new players initially.

In fact, the EGO is activated when a player

  • reaches level 15
  • obtains a total number of FANS greater than or equal to 1000.

Note: one of the two game conditions listed above is sufficient to activate the EGO.

image.png

The EGO and the importance of SKILL points

The negative effects of the EGO are measured in percentage terms and can be viewed from the EGO bar within the Missions section of Rising Star

image.png

In order to neutralise the EGO and cancel its negative effects, SKILL points are very important.

If the EGO score is higher than the total SKILL points then the EGO will produce its negative effects, otherwise not.

Total SKILL POINTS >= EGO score = No negative effect.
The EGO bar will display a value of 0%.
image.png

Total SKILL POINTS < EGO Score = Negative effect: reduction of maximum rewards of all game missions.
The EGO bar will display a value greater than 0%.
image.png

My EGO

In the following image you can see my game statistics and my EGO bar.

image.png

My EGO score is 9466 points
I have a total of 7719 points SKILL

EGO Score - SKILL Points = 9466 - 7719 = 1747

My EGO bar shows a value of 18%.

image.png

I have a problem to solve because all the maximum rewards of my missions are reduced by 18%.

For example, if I complete the Saturday Headline mission, I can receive a maximum reward of 1183 STARBITS because I have an 18% EGO, while with a 0% EGO, I could receive a maximum reward of 1425 STARBITS tokens.

image.png

With an 18% EGO if I complete a Saturday Headline mission I will earn:

  • In the worst case 350 STARBITS.

  • In the average case 941.5 STARBITS.
    [(350 + 1183)/2] = 941.5 STARBITS

  • In the best case 1183 STARBITS.

With a 0% EGO if I complete a Saturday Headline mission I will earn:

  • In the worst case 350 STARBITS.

  • In the average case 1062.5 STARBITS.
    [(350 + 1425)/2] = 1062.5 STARBITS

  • In the best case 1425 STARBITS.

Considering only the most likely case (the average case) after 10 missions I would have the following estimated gains:

With an EGO at 18%: 9415 STARBITS
With a EGO at 0%: 10625 STARBITS

With an EGO at 18%, for every 10 Saturday Headline missions completed I lose an average of 1210 STARBITS tokens (10625-9415).

The above calculations show how important it is to cancel out the negative effects of the EGO.

Solutions to cancel the effects of EGO

To cancel out the negative effects of Ego, it is necessary to balance Ego points with Skill points.

EGO = EGO Points - SKILL Points = 0.**

There are two solutions to nullify the effects of EGO:

  • Solution #1: Buy cards that have a higher number of SKILL points than the number of FANS points (SKILL points - FANS points > 0).
    image.png

This is the solution that requires an investment in STARBITS tokens or SWAP.HIVE tokens.

  • Solution #2: Complete the Music Lessons.
    image.png

My solution to cancel the EGO: the Music Lessons

(practical case)

My EGO is at 18% and I need to increase my total SKILL points by 1747 to cancel the negative effects of the EGO.

EGO Score - Total SKILL Points = 9466 - 7719 = 1747

To achieve this goal my choice is to complete the Music Lessons.

Music Lessons and Skill Points

The Music Lessons are a special type of missions that have a certain number of SKILL points as a reward instead of an amount of STARBITS tokens.

Music Lessons reward = SKILL POINTS

The number of Skill Points that can be gained from a music lesson is not the same for all players, but depends on the instrument type cards that each player owns.

There are 7 different Music Lessons:

  • Basic Singing Lesson
    image.png

  • Guitar Lesson
    image.png

  • Orchestral Lesson
    image.png

  • Production Lesson
    image.png

  • Piano Lesson
    image.png

  • Drum Lesson
    image.png

  • Road Crew Lesson
    image.png

The size of the reward for each Music Lesson is influenced by the possession of a particular type of card: Instrument cards.
The Instruments cards are the cards that permanently increase the number of Luck points.
The reward of each Music Lesson is only affected by a subset of the instrument cards.
For example:

  • the reward of the "Basic Singing Lesson" will be increased only by the "microphone" instrument cards.
  • Guitar Lesson" rewards will only increase with "guitar" type instrument cards (bass & acoustic included).
  • ...

Instrument cards allow you to earn more Skill points from completing a specific Music Lesson.

In the following images you can see all instrument cards divided by music lesson.

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

How to choose the best Music Lesson?

Choosing which music lesson to complete is simple: the mission with the biggest reward.

For example, I have a lot of microphone cards in my card collection, so I do the Basic Singing Lesson mission, which allows me to receive an amount of SKILL points in the range (min 21 - max 43) SKILL points as a reward.

image.png

Since each Basic Singing Lesson mission will earn me in the average case 32.5 SKILL points, in order to cancel out the negative effects of the Ego, I will have to do 54 "Basic Singing Lesson" missions (1747/32.5).

If I want to reduce the number of missions I have to complete, I have to buy more microphone-type instrument cards that will allow me to increase the reward of the "Basic Singing Lesson" mission.

How to choose the best instrument cards to buy: the LUCK points/$ ratio

Instrument cards have only one attribute: LUCK points.

The more LUCK points an instrument card has, the more it increases the reward (SKILL points) of the music lesson in which it can be used.

My buying strategy is as follows:

  • I buy the tool cards for sale on the Rising Star marketplace that have the best LUCK POINTS/$ ratio.

The LUCK points/$ ratio indicates the number of LUCK points that can be earned for every dollar spent on the purchase of a tool card.

In order to choose the most cost-effective tool cards to buy and suitable for my game objectives, I constructed a simple table with my spreadsheet.
For each microphone card on sale on the market, I calculated the LUCK points/$ ratio and sorted the table by the highest LUCK points/$ ratio.

image.png

Input data for calculating the LUCK Points/$ ratio

The input data for calculating the LUCK Points/$ ratio are as follows:

  • LUCK points of an instrument card
    image.png
  • the dollar value of 1 HIVE
  • the dollar value of 1 STARBITS
  • the HIVE value of 1 STARBITS
    image.png
  • the sale price of the instrument card in STARBITS
  • the sale price of the instrument card in SWAP.HIVE
    image.png

The best microphone-type instrument card to buy (November 20, 2021)

With the input data listed above, I calculated the value of the LUCK/$ (using SWAP.HIVE) and LUCK/$ (using STARBITS) ratios for each microphone-type instrument card being sold on the market.

image.png

The best purchase to increase the reward of the Basic Singing Lesson mission is the R114 Gold Mic card.

image.png

In fact, the R114 Gold Mic card has the highest LUCK/$ ratio (34.32).
Each $ spent on R114 Gold Mic cards will earn me 34.32 Luck points.

image.png

How to calculate the LUCK/$ ratio

If you want to calculate the LUCK/$ ratio yourself, you need to enter a simple formula in your spreadsheet.

For the LUCK/$ ratio (using SWAP.HIVE) the formula is as follows:

Card Luck Points / (Price in SWAP.HIVE of the card * Value of 1 HIVE in $)

For the ratio LUCK/$ (using STARBITS) the formula is as follows:

Card Luck Points / (Price in STARBITS of the card * Value of 1 STARBITS in $)

Calculating the value of 1 STARBITS in $ is even easier:

Value of 1 STARBITS in HIVE * Value of 1 HIVE in $.

If you want you can also calculate the LUCK/HIVE ratio and the calculation is even easier ;)

The purchase of selected cards

Having chosen the cards with the best LUCK/$ ratio I proceed to purchase them on the Rising Star market.
During the purchase I was lucky because the user @tatou66 put on sale 10 R114 Gold Mic cards at a lower price than the price I had entered in the table: 4500 STARBITS tokens instead of 4949 STARBITS.
I decided to buy all 10 cards for sale on the market.
To make the purchase, I used the NFTMart site (https://nftm.art/buy/star), which speeds up the purchase process compared to the Marcketplace section of the Rising Star site.

image.png

NFTMART immediately confirmed my purchase.

image.png

I have spent 45000 STARBITS tokens but now it is much cheaper for me to complete the Basic Singing Lesson.

Before my purchase I could earn a minimum of 21 SKILL points and a maximum of 43 SKILL points from completing the Basic Singing Lesson mission.
After my last purchase the minimum gain has more than doubled (21->47) as has the maximum gain (43->97).

image.png

What is your strategy against EGO?
Do you prefer to buy cards with a positive Skill-Points-Fans-Points difference or do you prefer to focus on completing music missions?

Rising Star = Free 2 Play = Play 2 Earn!

I hope you liked this post and I thank you for reading and taking the time to read it :)

image.png
Image owned by @libertycrypto27- Font used is Open Source

image.png

I token STARBITS

  • 0.00027 SWAP.HIVE (Highest BID)
  • 0.00028 SWAP.HIVE (Lowest Ask)

image.png

Il valore in dollari è di 0.00029$
1000 token STARBITS = 0.29$

image.png

    image.png

EGO = Total FANS (FANS fissi + FANS temporanei) + Total punti EGO dalle missioni

Totale Punti SKILL >= Punteggio EGO = Nessun effetto negativo

image.png

Il mio punteggio EGO è di 9466 punti
Ho un totale di 7719 punti SKILL

Punteggio EGO - Punti SKILL = 9466 - 7719 = 1747

EGO = Punti EGO - Punti SKILL = 0.

Punteggio EGO - Totale punti SKILL = 9466 - 7719 = 1747

Music Lessons e Punti Skill

Ricompensa Music Lessons = Punti SKILL

  • Basic Singing Lesson
    image.png

  • Guitar Lesson
    image.png

  • Orchestral Lesson
    image.png

  • Production Lesson
    image.png

  • Piano Lesson
    image.png

  • Drum Lesson
    image.png

  • Road Crew Lesson

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

😍 Come dire... WOW! Eccoti qua!

Another suggestion I have is to do a variety of missions. After all, the more times you do a mission, the more ego it will give you. So mixing things up will help you get less ego.

Raramente, Busking with License.

Thank you for the in-depth review of Rising Star. I'm still new with two or three weeks under my belt, but I love it.

I try to balance my ego in the way, that I have a buffer of approximately 200 skill points without drunk fans, so if all goes to plan, I never even have 1% of ego. One music lesson per day with a few cards of luck and you can reign in your ego too :o).

Really great game and an excellent review.

Grazie libertycrypto,

I had the same hunch as you with the luck/$ ratio, but I never did the math and wasn't sure, if equal cards can stack. After your in-depth-analysis I bought another R114 Gold Mic. I only have two now, but the information, that these cards stack is worth its weight in gold. :o)

Thanks for this! I'm a newbie Rising Star and recently hit the ego-wall. I decided to play without investing any money and so I'm level 19 and still haven't bought any cards yet! Almost at 10,000 starbits when I can buy mny first pack - that will be a bloomin' exciting day! The Ego issue has slowed my progress considerably though. I've been smashing out music lesson as much as possible but it's a massive energy investment. I'm hoping for a new card with hella load more fans!! Really great article. Cheers 🙏😁
