Fan Ho, the mastery of photography to the east of the planet / Fan Ho, la maestría de la fotografía al este del planeta

Fan Ho

Since I was little I was always curious, I had a stage in which I wanted to be an archaeologist, and well my mother told me that I was going to starve to death with that profession. While the others wanted to be actresses, I wanted to be an archaeologist, and my mother was right, I studied computer science and that is what opened up a whole field of knowledge that encompasses much more. Then digital photography arrived and with it computing helped me find that creative spark. But I did not give up my dreams, although I did not study archeology, because I went for research for simple personal knowledge. I had a teacher who told me that he was not going to show me how to think, only the facts so that I would know how to think for myself.

Photography showed me an immense amount of characters, because yes, photographers are half characters, each image is a part of our vision of reality. For example Fan Ho, many talk about the use of geometry, and they talk about how the master of patience is. However, I have tried to observe beyond each image, the person behind the camera. Fan Ho was born in Shanghai in 1931, and they gave him a camera and he started when he was 14 years old, and I feel that he had it clear from day one. Many of us feel obliged to leave a memory, as we are the ones who capture the reality of a second in a world full of seconds, but that present moment is unique and special.

Fan Ho

The culture in Asia is very different, they have a history that has been recorded for millennia. Each language, way of reading, the daily coming and going, all this affects creation in a good way. I feel like Fan Ho had his eye trained by his own culture, it was there that he created his own street photography taking it to a philosophical level. Behind each creator there is a person, who perhaps questions the world from there, or perhaps asks for help like so many. I am someone who but connects with the creator, the work does not interest me.

Fan Ho

Fan Ho died in 2016, his work was mainly from his 20s to his 28s, but in 2015 he had a project and it was to extend his book "Thoughts on Street Photography" from 1959. He felt that before leaving he needed to leave that documentary testimony, and his daughter who only knew him as a father managed to meet the artist. With it we can answer what Hong Kong was like before the skyscrapers, before you couldn't see the sky with so much pollution.

Fan Ho

Although he used black and white as the main technique, he knew how to experiment with color. The thing about Fan Ho is that I fell in love with the high contrast, and couldn't believe how wonderful it is, that magical and mysterious atmosphere that is sometimes used to hide decadence. They say he was the Cartier Bresson of the east, but it is disrespecting one artist to compare him with another, for me Fan Ho is him and no one else and my respects for him wherever he is.

Fan Ho

Fan Ho

Technique in art is important, but it is more important to those lacking in talent, who use it to censor or undervalue the work of others. Talented artists question everything and experiment. Learn to unlearn.

Fan Ho

Fan Ho as part of my art

Beautiful stuff! I had never even heard the name Fan Ho before reading this, and now I would say he is one of my favourite photographers EVER (although I couldn't tell you the names of two or three others). I appreciate you turning your spotlight towards him for a moment... now I know! ;)

The first thing I got to do in photography school was download the school's image bank. Once with that catalog, I began to study the folders one by one. It is amazing what can be learned from the history of photography. I try to post a lot about it. If you want to stop by my blog from time to time and find some other inspiration. Thanks for reading and enjoying. Have a nice weekend.
