What is quality content?

Since I've joined this blockchain more than 3 years ago, I have always been confronted with one question: What is a good post?

In my experience, I think that this question isn't that easy to answer and I believe that it's not just black or white. There is a lot of subjectivity involved and we are very curious to know how you would define what a good post is.

Liotes Mission

By taking part in the Liotes missions, you can win credits that will help you to increase your score and your title in the Liotes Ranking.

Today's challenge

How would you define what a good post is? What are the reasons why you vote on certain posts but not on others?

Just write down your answer in a comment below this post.

You will get 2 credits for taking this challenge and 3 additional credits if your answer is more than just the bare minimum. We are very grateful if you enter the challenge within 24 hours after the post is published. We will try to count entries up to 36 hours after publication.

For me a good post needs to meet a few different criteria.

  1. Well written. The writer should show that they spent the time to make sure the grammar, spelling, and punctuation are correct in the post. I’m pretty forgiving of errors here since I know English isn’t a lot of people’s first language, but you can tell when someone just typed something out and hit submit without a second look.
  2. Original. I don’t care how well written your post is. If it has already been written about 100 times, and you aren’t adding anything new to the conversation then I probably won’t read it.
  3. Well researched. If you are talking about something you aren’t completely familiar with you should do your research before posting. Especially if your post is recommending people make particular investments.

The length of the post doesn’t really matter to me. As long as the person is getting their point across effectively. You guys always do a good job at hitting all of these, so thanks for that. !LUV 1

While I was reading your fantastic comment, I was thinking about how we don't always do a good job... :) As English isn't our first language, that barrier is one of the hardest to "cover". Of course, we (or anyone else) can't know everything about a certain topic, but you are right about making at least an effort to research and bring something new... If nothing else, even a personal view is a good start... ;)

Thanks for the comment!

You both do a great job with your English. Every once in awhile there will be a word or phrase that doesn’t quite fit, but your posts are always easily understandable to me. You do much better then a lot of people here in the U.S. who only speak English haha.

For me it's pretty simple but it's going to be different for everyone.

  • If it provides development, adoption or helps growth it gets my highest vote
(Currently I feel development needs to be priority around here)

  • If it's a post I gain information from it gets my second highest vote
    (I enjoy learning new things)

  • If it's a post on a popular topic and it gets promoted on other socials it gets my next highest
(Promoting your own content on other platforms helps bring awareness)

  • If it's a post that's well written but is more of a light hearted post it gets my lowest vote
(Idk to me just writing about your day etc is ok but it's not really providing any value in my opinion)

  • If it's flat out spam you get no vote

Since hive itself is a article marketing site I only really go for 300 words+ anything less will have issues ranking in search results.

Thank you for this detailed answer... I can agree with most of the things that you said, and we have to be aware that not everyone can write "masterpiece" here on Hive, but there are some minimum requirements that should be met...

Personally, I want to see that author has made an effort to write the post... That shows that he/she cares for others, and for the platform in general...

A "good" post is something that you can tell the author put some effort into. When posting myself, I know how long it takes to get images, and headers, and emphasis, and links, and other things to present your information in a way the reader can enjoy reading. It's not just a wall of text.

It also needs to be something you can tell the author composed themselves. If it's just spouting out facts and information I can find myself without putting your own personal spin on it, it will rarely get my vote.

Oh, I like your answer... It's kind of a perfect combo...

Confusion:

At first, I drew a blank. I was not certain I could define a quality post. The quality of a post is subjective, but when you consider rewarding that post with some value, a definition became warranted. So, I find my reasoning to be similar to many others in this comment section.

Subjective Criteria:

There has to be some standardization across the board regarding a post's quality, or the rewards system doesn't make sense. A consequence of this would be a lack of engagement and value in the system.

  1. Good grammar and writing structure
  2. No plagiarism
  3. Personalized content

Bases

Items #1 & 2 should be self-explanatory. No one likes it when an author copies/pastes someone else's work as their own. I think we can all agree on this point. Additionally, it serves as a good foundation for everything else that's judged. If the reader can understand a presented topic, they can ascribe some baseline value to the post.

Personalized content is what drives me to reward. Do you have a different take on a topic discussed frequently? Can you report on a topic and then deliver your message?

Posted via proofofbrain.io

I always have some bells inside my head that are saying: "Don't judge others!" And I know that it's not a good thing to do, especially not in a way that some people are doing, but we are doing that a lot of times during the day... Maybe not judging people, but judging things, or maybe better said, "evaluating" them...

The same goes for the posts here on Hive... And it is a very subjective thing, but most of the comments here have pointed out the same fact that is probably the most important... Like you said too, personalized content, different approach to the topic, and YOUR view about it...

Thanks for taking part in this discussion!

You're very welcome! Thank you for inspiring the conversation. I enjoy the curation though, I admit, it gets daunting at times. I find enjoyment through engagement. One day I hope to make profit from it too!

Posted via proofofbrain.io

I'll add to the contents of a quality post given recent conversations I had. There's a lot of angry posts out there for one reason or another. I mean, people need to vent, right? Higher quality posts should delve into the reasoning for the anger.

Did a DV make you mad? Let's talk about it. Is it against someone in particular? Well, why do you think they downvoted you, and is it for a behavior that you or they could change?

Talk about the reasons for your posting rather than just complain and ridicule. If it's a legitimate and well-communicated concern perhaps the community and work to mitigate it.

Content is King. For me a good post addresses an item that is on my mind, a problem I have been experiencing or is interesting and entertaining. I have seen some post that get lots of upvotes that are just a lot of show with flashy screenshots but does not provide me any value. Yes, sometimes I will be drawn in by the show but I do not always vote for them because I did not get any value. I always lean toward function over form but that is a personal preference.

The question and the topic are subjective and personal... There are no good or bad answers, but different points of view about it... And, there is a lot of "screenshot posts" without that personal touch inside... That will explain those screenshots and make them more personal...

You aren't alone with your point of view... A lot of us like to SEE the person behind the post while we are reading/watching it...

Thanks for taking your time to comment!

First of all, I would say that we have a saying here - "every eye has its own painter". So, so-called quality content is a subjective view. Something that I like, say some music, or a painting, is not necessarily something that you will like.
So what are we going to do now? Again, we are faced with a dilemma - that those who have some kind of power in a certain environment determine what is quality and what is not. This is still quite evident here on Hive. Well, elsewhere, on other networks, it's even worse. Well, that's my opinion on quality.
Personally, I have to be impressed by a piece of content, whether it's text, image, audio, or video. If I'm impressed I'll comment and vote here on Hive, share it on Twitter, say thank you in a comment (although I've read from the "smarties" here that it does not comment "it's great", "thank you", etc., it's spam).
I'm involved in a couple of curation trails but mostly I do everything - comments (if I like something then I vote, too) manually. I find that this maintains a kind of social interaction, albeit online...
... my five cents ... 😎

I have to agree with you here, and some people really don't know how to "handle" that power... Especially adding downvotes and unproperly use of them, but that is another topic...

but mostly I do everything - comments (if I like something then I vote, too) manually. I find that this maintains a kind of social interaction, albeit online...

This is 100% true... I was doing heavily engagement past years, and the direct result was that... I had a lot of social interaction and I met some great friends here... Lately, I had a lot of other works on my back and I didn't have too much time for reading posts and commenting... But, I'm slowly coming back and results are visible almost immediately... ;)

The most important is truly to care about others and treat them as we treat ourselves...

Thanks for the comment!

On the Hive blockchain, what "quality content" is in part depends on where you post your content. I just scrolled through some new posts on CTP Talk and found one that was simply a photo (actually, quite an attractive photo) of some flowers supported by a single line of text. The publisher is clearly hoping to pick up some quick and easy CTP tokens without worrying about the relevance of the post to the purpose of the CTP community.

However, the same post could be considered "quality content" if it had been posted to relevant hive communities (assuming the photo was actually taken by the person who posted it). So context and relevance are clearly important factors in deciding what quality content is.

In the context of the CTPTalk community, I look for posts that are well written and focus mainly on how the publisher is building their business and what they have learned along the way. I also enjoy a good story so I am happy to read or watch stuff by people who are reporting on other aspects of their life as well. A good example of this would be the content put out by @pixiepost who shares amusing stories and posts proverb-memes, musings about the tarot, astrology and so forth, all of which are part of her "personal brand".

So I would say that for me, "quality content" is unique, informative, entertaining, and relevant in some broad way to the community in which it is posted.

Very nice point of view, David... I like your view about posting to the "right" community... But, in the end, even that photo should be "special" and show some effort of taking it... As someone said here in the comment, it is subjective, especially if we look into different post-types, like arts, photos, poems, etc...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this topic!

How would you define what a good post is? What are the reasons why you vote on certain posts but not on others?

For me, a good post is either informing the readers about a topic from different perspectives of a situation or a post that is merely for consciousness-raising. While these are the main criteria for an upvote, format, plagiarism and depth of info also play critical role.

I upvote posts that are enriched by the comments of the writer. When I see a specific section for personal thoughts and/or experience, I always upvote and leave a comment if I believe I have an idea. I think my upvoting process is quite simple ^^ An endeavor is enough for people to be appreciated by others 😏

Yeah! In some way, the post should be intriguing, challenging... To make us think, and hopefully, to learn something new...

Thanks for the comment! Appreciated!

A good post is good because you see the effort put into it. You see tons of posts on hive where people don't even bother checking for their facts and write without "heart" . A lot of posts I see are one shitty photo and a few lines written without thought. And to see these posts making 2 or even 3 figures hurts.

A quality post begins with preparation, choosing an interesting topic and then writing about it with passion. Passion is a key word here, without you putting your passion into the post the post will lack in quality.
Of course sometimes you write about things you are not passionate about but then you have to use the passion for not being your passion.
Research is also important, checking facts and numbers is almost as important as checking your post for spelling mistakes.
At last if you used a source to write your article then you also have to state or quote the source.
Formatting is something I want to get better at and some peeps should also do a basic course in how a reading brain works.
!invest_vote

Wow! That was an awesome comment and you said something that I fully agree with... Passion is the key! I have caught myself when I'm creating a written post, or vlog, and speak about that is my passion, I could write 5K words or speak for hours... lol... In those moments, I have to control myself and take care of the viewers' time... lol...

Some people think that quality must have at least a certain number of characters. Others think it must contain a fully researched response. I think neither one is required. A quality post must contain relevant, original content that is well though out and easy to understand. It must support your position/opinion in a way that is truthful and not argumentative or attacking. Basically, be honest...be nice...be clear...be real.

I think it ends up subjective since it ends up being random to me.

For me in general, I vote on content that I think is written well and I could understand what they wanted to get across. I don't particularly care if you it isn't as long if it gets the point across but if it is too low in length, I will give it a lower upvote.

At the same time, I do not condone any plagiarized content. I will not vote anything like that. I also like good posts where I actually learned a few things as well. Sometimes just a different view is enough to open your eyes and view things in a different light.

A good post adds to the discussion at hand, or at the very least provides a detailed response to a question being posted. Ideally it's well written, but I'm not sure that's a hard requirement. Usually anything that's only one word replies or simple sentences probably doesn't qualify.

A good post adds to the discussion

This is indeed the magic question about what is a good post. It shows effort, is polite, clear, respectful of others' time, is clear, somehow adds value. These are all things that are very subjective, so it's hard.

To me, it's one of those things that's hard to define, but you know it when you see it. I'll also say this. Things are not always fair. Putting in a lot of effort and delivering a quality post doesn't always get due attention. And the cat rapping on the moon gets a ton of upvotes. I've always thought...just do your thing and be yourself and let's things fall where they may.

just do your thing and be yourself and let's things fall where they may.

That's a pretty good philosophy I believe. Quality is really subjective especially in such a contexte. I think if you are true to yourself and you write what you are passionate about then you produce quality in your own eyes. I'm sure with consistency and engagement, there will also be other people who will see it that way.

Thanks for taking part!

I'm an artist and craftsman, so I view it like I view selling arts and crafts.

The first art I sold was sign art. I found it difficult to name a price, but I found other artists pricing their craft by how much they want to make an hour. Is your craft worth $20 an hour? $30 an hour?

So when I vote, I take this into consideration. I upvote all my artist friends. I know a good amount of time and effort and creativity was put into a piece of art. If the word count is low, that's okay because the art was the work.

For written posts, I do the same. If I can tell a good amount of time was taken to research and write they get a full upvote.

I admit, when considering how many upvotes I get a day, especially on POB, I tend to favor the smaller accounts because I want HIVE to be filled with a lot of smaller accounts as opposed to a few large accounts.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

I'm not very good at arts, but I do have a very good friend who is an artist... He has the same problem when he has to "put the price" on his artworks... As it is very hard to do because of multiple factors that have to be calculated to that price...

It's not just how it looks, it is the story about the artwork... How it is created? What experiences have implemented the author? Sometimes the artwork takes a lot of time to be done... There were obstacles, which ones and why?....

The same goes for posts here on Hive...

Thanks for sharing your view about this matter!
