I think a day to celebrate is fine but I agree that there is way too much emphasis placed on the monetary/consumerism aspect of some days of celebration. I try to show those that I love and appreciate gratitude on a daily basis if possible.

It took me a lot of years to get past the indoctrination you speak of. I am much happier being present and thoughtful each day rather then waiting for specific days determined by others with possible monetary type reasons to tell me when to celerate. Like you said though, to each their own. :)

I am glad I am not the only one who went through this process ... and remember how difficult it was and now look back and nostalgically think about the lost time ...

I also agree 100% with giving and showing affection without waiting for a certain day, we learn that when we understand how difficult life can be and you want to take advantage of every second and squeeze the best out of it.
