nVidia or AMD .:. Help Me To Pick a GPU For My Future Rig

Before you start to criticize GPU mining and saying that this is the worst time for starting something like that because of Ethereum going to full staking "soon", just to clarify that that is not a topic of this video nor a post... I have decided on creating another rig despite that fact and I'm aware of the risks that I'm taking by creating a new rig in "these times"...

As I said, I'm aware of the risk, but I will not ignore that information in deciding which steps to take... I'm in GPU mining since early 2017 and I know plenty of things about hardware and GPUs in general... I have always preferred ATI (now AMD) over nVidia and I'm not hiding that... It was a love at first sight when I bought ATI 9550 cards for my PC Playroom and they have worked flawlessly... Until now, ALL the cards that I own in my mining rigs are AMD, from RX 570, through RX 580, and finally, RX 5700XT that I have bought and built a rig last year...

But... I don't want to ignore the current situation with GPU markets and GPU performances on different algos for mining... It is a fact that nVidia cards work better with other algos which serve for mining other coins than ETH... For example, Ravencoin or ERGO... That makes them more competitive when ETH goes full staking... But... New nVidia cards have implemented lock for Ethash algo (serves for mining Ethereum) which unlocks only 50% of mining potential for ETH... Yes, there are some software solutions (through mining programs) that can unlock up to 70% of the hash rate, but that is still under what AMD cards can do...

On the other side, AMD cards don't have any limiters (yet) and you can mine with "full capacity" with them, but they have weaker results in mining other altcoins than nVidia... Regarding prices, they are always well balanced so there isn't too much thinking about that...

So which one would you pick if you have a choice? And why?

Help me to pick a GPU for my rig and check out the video for more pros and cons about cards...

Thank you for your valuable time,

~ph~

I've always preferred nVidia for various reasons. Primarily because nVidia seems to do a better job with Linux drivers. But I'm not willing to pay the absurd price cards of either GPU type demand right now.

Thanks for your opinion! I'm also leaning more toward nVidia this time... And regarding drivers for Linux, they are more less OK... I remember the time when I was installing those old Sapphire ATI 9550 on Linux... and then was really bad regarding anything with Linux... lol...

Well the prices seem a bit too crazy for me but if I had a choice, I would probably choose Nvidia. I think they are growing but they are also expanding and trying to merge their competition so I think AMD has potential to be better in the future if they improve.

It is true that prices are crazy in the past couple of months... I remember buying my RX 5700XT for $500 in the last December... From then, those cards were at almost $1500, and luckily, they are slowly going back down...
With nVidia launch of their LHR cards, the availability and the prices are doing much better... We will see what will happen in the next month or two...

No idea about mining at all. Good luck with the most suitable GPU.

I do not mine or very knowledgeable about computers but I was always told I had good problem solving skills. First some assumptions: 1) Since you state the ETH mining is getting to its end, I am assuming this is months and not years from now 2) I assume the GPU is interchangeable and does not require other purchases of specific equipment for it to work in your computer mining setup. 3) I assume the prices are stable but to change from one set up to the other would be costly and at this time you can only purchase one of the two types of GPU and it would be a few years before you would be able to switch to the other type.

Based on these assumptions, I would pick the GPU that could be used to mine the largest amount of Altcoin after the few months that ETH can no longer be mined. This would provide current mining ability and maximize the long term ability to mine without any down time to set up another system. One assumption I did not reflect above was the price of ETH vs the other Altcoin that could be mined. I would assume the Altcoin would have a price of around 75% of the ETH and that the prices for the mined coins appreciate at around the same rates.

Wow... You did a nice break-down, but unfortunately, there are more than 3 variables in the whole story... :) Anyways, I have a similar thinking as ETH mining will (probably... nobody knows the future) not last more than a year, but the profits by mining ETH instead of others are a bit less than double...

But, I do plan to use my equipment for more than just 1 year, so I will probably buy nVidia GPUs as they should mine more other coins... Again, a quantity of coins doesn't mean that they will be better than some X coin who is maybe better supported by AMD... But, probabilities are those that are working for nVidia at the moment...

Thanks for a great comment! Appreciated!

I like NVIDIA, but that's just emotion, not knowledge talking. Do you know any place where a non-techy newb who wants to become the biggest GPU Shitcoin Miner in Laramie County can go to learn the basics? Like risers. What the heck is a riser and why would I need one?
