THE CONCEPT OF EARNING AND LEARNING AS A STUDENT || A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

It would be interesting if students in schools have the ability to get rewarded as they learn. It would so much make learning fun and encourage students to take learning more seriously. Do you know why? because most students of today are distracted by the quest for funds for survival and give little priority to what they are being taught in school. So if their learning process is capable of paying for their daily bread, why would we not have more students who would pay more attention to lessons taught in classes?

This has been one of my dreams before I joined Hive, and since my encounter with Hive, my dream becomes clearer and a reality day by day. I want to develop a school system where I can reward every one of my students for doing well in class thereby encouraging them to do more.

Imagine a school where every time you are given an assignment, you only have to do the assignment and publish it on Hive and then the whale account of the school comes in to appreciate those published contents based on how well the student performs. If a student doesn't get many votes today, next time, he would want to put more effort into his practical assignment to get more support.

Do you get my point now? this way every student would want to pay so much attention to what they are being taught and try their best in every assignment they do because they get rewarded for it based on their performance.

"This is one of my reasons for wanting to grow my account, so I can fulfill this dream."

That is because today, I went out to teach a friend how to play the guitar. She had been on my neck to take her lessons and I chose to use today to teach her. I started with the basics of music in general because it is not easy to learn to play guitar without knowing some general music terms.

Meet Olamide, a childhood friend

One thing about guitar compared to the keyboard is that, on the keyboard, without having any prior understanding of music or even knowledge of how to play the keyboard, one can go towards a keyboard to play anything and end up making nice tones from it but compared to the guitar?

From the moment you carry the guitar to making a single strum on the guitar, it is very easy to sense that this person does not know how to play the guitar. That is how complex the guitar is when you are just starting to play it.

That is why I had to teach her the general basics of music which would make it easier for me to explain to her how to read the guitar neck easily. I was so much happy with the way she understood easily how I explained to her everything without holding a book and biro.

I was lying on her bed, while she was sitting across on her notepad while I was talking to her explaining everything and giving examples. As a norm, every time I have to explain to people, I would need to take a biro to write them down so they can understand but the fact that she could understand me easily made me happy.

I asked questions and she got them right. Mind you, she had zero knowledge of what I was teaching her. I was teaching her the complete basics from the total number of keys all the way to chords. she understood everything without me holding a single shit on paper.

It got to the point that every time she answers a question right, I credit her account with $2 because I was happy she was understanding me. I needed something to encourage her to do more. She was happy that she was earning money from me as she was getting the questions right.

The fact that she got rewarded for passing each question and test I gave her, boosted her interest to learn. I was happy seeing the smile on her face each time she won $2 from me.

I bet by now, you already understand the perspective of being able to earn as you learn. It makes the students see the fun in learning and boost the morale of wanting to learn. Since it is an all-win case.

I told myself that minute; If I was to be a teacher in real life I would go wreck. why? Because I would end up spending my whole salary on the students because I find joy when I give a student assignment or ask them questions and they give me feedback. I love teaching to some point but at the same time, there is a very frustrating part of it.

It is fun to see that you groom up people but at the same time, the process can be tiring and tasky. It only takes patience and practice to be a good professor.

So #Learn2Earn ? 😁😁

Well, it's a wonderful idea. A reward system is great for learners but I don't think it's sustainable. It's just like people reading to pass, once they see they got good grades, they're satisfied not minding if the knowledge sticks or not. Money is not so much of a motivation for many. True motivation comes from within and no amount of cajoling will help a person that's not motivated.

People already know the monetary benefits that come with being on hive but some still are not motivated enough to be active on the platform.

Yeah that's true. But looking at it in the educational system where everything student only needs hive to submit their assignments..

It just not only come as a way of motivating students but also supporting them as well.

Your theory sounds nice, it would have been nice if what u suggested could be implemented.

There will be more focus and less distractions, student will have less excuse for poor academic performance. And it will increase the standard of education.

These days education feels like a maze.

These days education feels like a maze.

Exactly… it’s hard to find direction. We are distracted from the main focus and end up loosing passion for our field of study.

But with a concept like this, there would be fewer distractions as you said earlier. As people of nowadays are distracted by the quest of money.

You're damn intelligent mehn!

I've reasoned about this before but not so deep. If this is possible for students to earn while learning we will have more of them interested in being literate especially in typical rural regions of the country where illiteracy is rampant like sachet water.

Except someone with a rotten brain will not be interested in earning while learning. Even someone who is not a student will be willing to do so because I feel it is how the human nature is wired. We tend to put more efforts in doing something when a reward is attached to it.

Exactly, we would have more students being literate! Why I agree to this is that many of us in school feel as why are we stressing ourselves in school when we would still end up looking around for money.

So many would just give up completing their education to learn a skill.

But with a system like this developed, we would have people to see reasons why they should further their education!

Sharing School Assignments on hive sounds really a great idea, this way other students can learn and assignment publisher can earn as you said whale accounts will come to appreciate the efforts sooner or later. Good idea indeed. I appreciate your idea or concept. You also appreciated by some whale accounts as I can see, congratulations!!!

You get the Idea! Thereby makes things easier for the students. But for this case it’s best if the school have their own whale account than depending on other whales. That way, students can be easily appreciated!

This is such a brilliant idea you have.👍

In a world where survival is sought after rather than learning, the inception of the thought of earning while learning would greatly improve 🤌interest and a keen approach to learning.

It is imperative that one finds substantial passion in any form for whatever is being learned to efficiently boost the learning process.

I know for sure that I would have been doing much better if this idea of yours had been applied all these years in the education system of our country.😌

Making students learn and earn.

Wow, this concept of earning $2 for any question answered correctly sounds so tempting oo🤔, seems I would book for my own guitar learning. What do you think? 🤩🤩

Oh yes, I got the sermon! Reward motivates learning, don't know for others but it works for me, for whatever I found interesting to do or learn , I do them with passion and when reward is involved, I go extra mile to achieve a better result.

I've also thought of something like this before even till tomorrow. For me it is just right that you get commended for a job well done more often than you get condemned. I can imagine the smile on Olamide's face for first getting the answers to the questions and also the extra prize.

You did really well Starstrings. All the best on achieving your dreams, I believe you can is just a matter of time.

Your idea and methodology is nice, I just hope schools could adopt it, it would go a long way boosting the morale of students to learn more, wanting to know more because they know they would get something in return, the popular slang in town "school is a scam" is trending and somehow real because there are so many graduates out there jobless and still living in abject poverty while illiterate are making it big time, but imagine you earn right from when you're in school virtually everyone would sit tight simply because they know a reward is attached and won't just learn for learning sake.

Thanks for sharing.

Hello @starstrings01 I've been a teacher and I can really relate to the joy and feeling of fulfilment a teacher derives from seeing his/her student understanding the lessons. You applied a good encouraging mechanism to your student too.

On your focus for the post which is rewarding students for doing well, it's a good one. Back when I was a teacher I remember gifting students who answered questions correctly or dressed neatly to school with writing materials. It encouraged them to keep on and motivated others to do better. It's a really good idea.

If this was the actual way school system worked I'll be so happy to be a student 😓

First, Olamide is beautiful.
Secondly, I agree with you on earning and learning. During some of my lectures in school, I would be imagining myself being a professor teaching a whole class and rewarding intelligent students with cash prizes or data because our professors sometimes aren't great teachers despite their tons of degrees and thought that if I would be one someday, I'll raise intelligent and passionate students. 🙂

Earning while learning will really be a good exercise which would help students to improve more on what they are doing.
Nice write up ✍️
