Christmas City Lights of Almería .:. Late Night Wednesday Walk

avatar

You have probably noticed that I didn't publish too many posts lately and as a matter of fact, I think that I made the longest "break" between two posts ever! It was exactly 1 week between my two PH-Pool posts, and I know that I didn't skip any of the #MyHiveGoals posts... But, I have a good excuse this time! For a long time, I had a vacation where I didn't hang on my computer...

I will try to create another series of posts from my latest road trip, as I have used my phone camera heavily... lol... My trip began on January 1st (is there a better way to start the New Year?) and finished on January 8th... It was a kind of round-trip (literally round) through Portugal and Southern Spain...

01.jpg

On our route, we (I went with my family) had multiple cities where some of them weren't even in "calculations" before the trip... In the end, we visited Almería, Malaga, Tarifa, Huelva, Lisbon, Porto, and Salamanca! As I like to do things in order, I will share these posts as they were happening... So, our first stop is Almería!

02.jpg

Before the start, I would say that the timing of this trip was perfect... As it was right after the New Year, almost all the cities that we visited were still decorated with lights and the streets were busy... Outdoor markets, entertainment parks, and other different events all around...

03.jpg

Why Almería? To be honest, I picked that city as it was at the ideal distance between our homeplace and the next "stage"... We couldn't go early in the morning on the trip, so I have limited "driving" time for the first day... But, Almería wasn't a disappointing choice at all!

04.jpg

The city itself is popular for many different things, but there are 2 main things that "stand out"... It is one of the main sources of fruits and vegetables in Spain, which wouldn't be a surprise if you look at the number of sunny days during the year... But, if you take a look at Google maps, you will notice that the whole area is colored red, which means that there is a lack of water...

05.jpg

... and that leads to the second "attraction" to this area... As it looks like a desert, it has been used as a land for recording dozens (or better said hundreds) of movies! For huge filmmaking companies, it is cheaper to record movies in Spain than to "re-create" and rent Hollywood studios... So, here were filmed all-time classics such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962) or A Fistful of Dollars (1964), but also newer movies like Terminator: Dark Fate or Game of Thrones (2016 season 6)...

06.jpg

07.jpg

But, as I said, we didn't have time to visit those locations (there are guided tours if you are interested), but we had a nice long shot to the city center and walked through the streets from our hotel and back...

08.jpg

These nice Christmas decorations were situated on the main square around the city town building...

09.jpg

10.jpg

11.jpg

This was another city square, but this time, it was in front of the old cathedral... As it has been so nicely decorated, many people were taking photos, including myself... 😃 As it was late in the evening, Cathedral was closed, so we couldn't get in to take more photos...

12.jpg

13.jpg

14.jpg

...but, we did get closer to take a look at the statue of the Almerian bishop, and also, to buy tasty chestnuts from the local girl that was selling them... 🍽

15.jpg

16.jpg

Interestingly, every street in the city had different decorations...

17.jpg

...and then we bumped into something that I have never seen... Such a great idea how to create a "dreamy" environment using simple tools like ordinary lights, laser lights, a bit of "disco smoke", and a good sound system... All that, used in a perfect location... The local park that has these trees with long branches...

18.jpg

What you can see in the photos was followed by the child's narration of a story about the sea and the creatures living in it...

19.jpg

20.jpg

21.jpg

Another huge city avenue is a perfect place for a big noria that was built 2 years ago and I suppose that these lights were added as a Christmas decoration... If you want to check out the views from it, you can visit this post...

22.jpg

23.jpg

Another perfect place for taking photos with your family or friends was this "Christmas bell", which was right behind that teddy bear from the beginning of this post...

24.jpg

25.jpg

As tradition says, when it's Christmas time, you have to have a Christmas market! It's not like those German markets, but you can find many interesting things that you can use, or keep as a memory of this great city...

26.jpg

27.jpg

Of course, a lot of candies for the children, pancakes, hot beverages, etc...

28.jpg

Thank you for your valuable time,

~ph~

I had to show my wife this as she lived in Cadiz for quite a few years and visited there a few times
They sure make it look pretty with the decorations they are so cool but live the light display in the forest

Thanks for joining the Wednesday, its always fun for me to visit the walks from all around the world, getting a feel for communities where people live and what they see on their daily walks

The whole trip was great, but I have to say that Cadiz was the most beautiful town/city... Maybe because it's an island town with a lot of history, or because of its narrow streets, but I liked it a lot! In one of the next posts, I will share my photos from there!

After visiting Cadiz, we went down to Tarifa, the closest place to Gibraltar... Got some photos from there too for some future posts! 😃

As I love sunny days, Almeria would be the perfect place for me. 😊 Beautiful evening photos, it seems like a lively place.

Such a charming town. Beautifully decorated with lights. I love the christmas market.

It is charming! The most interesting fact is that we had no idea what to expect in the city center... We just went for a walk and saw many different "events" by accident... :) If we have planned, we wouldn't see all that :)

Great photos, I am surprised at how busy it is there! How was the weather overall? Was it reasonably warm?

I was driving most of the day and we walked when it was already night (as in these photos), or in the morning... But, in general, it wasn't warmer than it is at my home... This means maybe 8-12 degrees in the morning and night, and maybe 17-18 degrees during the day...

Oh how lucky are you to be able to go to such a beautiful and historic spot.

They really did well with all of those beautiful xmas lights didn't they!

Sooo much better than Melbourne!

I look forward to seeing more of your sensational Spain soon!

I'll send this link to my friend Joe who's in Alicante too!

I'll send this link to my friend Joe who's in Alicante too!

Oh, he is my neighbor then... :) Is he a Hiver, too?

The blessing and the curse of this road trip were that we visited most places by night as I was driving during the day... But, with Xmas lights, it wasn't that bad at all... 😃

Cheers!!!

Yes @nexus22 he's from Melbourne but is living in Alicante and I got him signed up a while ago, but unfortunately life keeps interrupting him...

Yeah that's the shame of driving- especially if you're the one doing the driving, the most scenery you end up seeing is the road.😄.🙄....but a great time to go to see those places at night with the xmas lights though...

I have been on a mission to get to Alicante myself, but then covid, now finances...someday I will get there and go driving myself to see all of Spain!
