Scarecrow Trails & Woodland Walks

It's half-term here in our county in England and Halloween is coming up this weekend. With that comes the traditional trick or treating, carved pumpkins, and ghostly tales. But before we get to the weekend, we have another wonderful 'ghoulish season' bit of fun: the scarecrow trails.

We hadn't been on one for a couple of years but we saw one being advertised by a local primary school about a 20-minute drive from us. The local residents had decided to get together to do a fundraiser for their school. So we drove down to their local village coffee shop, stopped in for a hot drink, and purchased a scarecrow trail map. The donation covered the map and a little Halloween sweet for the kids.

Then off we set on foot around the neighbourhood. The trail did a circular loop through most of the residential area and up some pretty steep residential roads, as the village high street is in a valley, and the village is built up from there up the hills on either side. The backend of the trail took us through some lovely woodland that also appears to have been the setting for a family fun run a few weeks prior as we found an old poster that they forgot to take down. There were some really imaginative creations on the trail with a lot of effort put in by the residents 💗 The kids were able to let off some steam and get rid of their energy in the woods, albeit it was quite slippery from the recent rainfalls.

My eldest's favourite was 'The Beekeeper'. We came across this scarecrow near the end of the trail. The lady who lives in the house is a beekeeper and bottles the honey from her hives. Of course, my boys saw her sign and wanted to buy a jar! I'm always happy to support local small businesses, so my 10 year old popped down to her front door and rang the bell, handed over the cash, and the deal was done. We came home, one jar of honey heavier, £7 cash lighter lol. I am the only vegan in our home, so I won't have any, but the boys have enjoyed it on toast and cereal already. Apparently, it came 6th in a contest out of 50 odd beekeepers.

Hubby, our youngest, and I all loved 'ET and Elliot' the most! Although it was close for me between that and 'UP' (see the last pic!)

We finished off the day by stopping in at the shops and buying the kids a large pumpkin each for carving this weekend.

We had planned to go to a Pumpkin Farm to pick our own pumpkins, but the allure of the scarecrows for the kids was too much to pass up.

I hope you enjoyed this little walk with us for @tattoodjay 's weekly Wednesday Walk.

I think they are all so creative but I think I am with you and would give my vote to the UP one

Thanks 😊we had a lovely couple of hours as a family doing this, and that made it extra special and fun. It's a great idea for a fundraiser if you know of any charities, schools, hospitals etc that need support. Just needs the community to get involved. I had no idea this little fundraising contest existed so close to us but it was definitely worth supporting 😍

thank you @funshee 😍I don't get to take part each week as I am balancing a ton of stuff IRL and on Hive lol, although I should certainly try to do so more often as I always enjoy writing them up and putting them together! Happy Halloween to you too.

I had no idea that you guys got into Halloween so much these days too.

I remember when I was young and it was just an American tradition, now it's everywhere.

Well it looks like you guys had a hugely fin day out!

Thanks so much for sharing.

ha ha ... yeah some of the houses go all out here although most just have lit pumpkins outside with a few scary decorations and have bowls of sweets on hand for the kids who call in their Halloween costumes. There is one house round the corner from us where the guy sits outside his front door as still as can be in a chair and he looks like a Halloween figurine ... until you get super close and reach for a sweet and he comes alive! My youngest almost died of fright the first time it happened. He was 6 at the time and he ran screaming down the middle of the road. Hubby had to chase after him quickly to make sure he didn't get run over by a car. Some houses entire fronts become Halloween houses and front yards and that's pretty cool.

Wow that's pretty mindblowing. How long has the UK been swallowed up in that phenomena?

Yes, I remember growing up here in the 70/80s and occasionally we would dress up for halloween, but only in primary shcool for a lark, it wasn't done anywhere else, just a day in Primary school, and not in the older classes either and America was always referenced as the beginnings of it...

Thank you. I don't usually post pics of my kids online but for some reason this felt ok. I think those from whom I would want to protect my kids are highly unlikely to be present on Hive. We did have a fabulous time. !PIZZA

We don't celebrate Halloween here, but we do have the tradition of carnival, the season of fools starts in November, but the big street parades take place in February. I grew up in a carnival stronghold, the peculiarity was that we held our parade a week before everyone else. I loved dressing up as a child and teenager. As I got older, the music tents were definitely part of the adventure in the evening, where we went to the champagne bar or drank cheap beer and went wild with dancing and flirting. It was always bitterly cold, of course, but that didn't bother us then. The individual wagons with the themes sometimes took weeks of preparation to decorate and to process the cardboard and costumes. I never took part in the big projects myself, but preferred to be free and unattached with my girlfriend or a secret friend on the streets and squares. Here, appropriately enough, is a finishthestory story about it. If you feel like it, I'd be happy if you read it.

You live in a beautiful area, thank you for this insight and the photos - what neat sons you have!

Thank you for stopping by @erh.germany. I do hope to attempt a completion of one of your stories soon. I will take a look at this. My plate has just been super full this week with half term and curation efforts. I still haven't finalised my word of the week entry...ouch! That's gonna make it a late one tonight 🤣Lol it seems like Germany loves its beer whatever the occasion😀💗It sounds like you have a lot of fun there nevertheless. Thank you for sharing these insights. My husband's cousin lives just south of Munich, about 1/2 hour by train and we are hoping to go and visit her once covid restrictions relax a bit more. She suggested February but we need to see if it ties in with our kids' half term. !PIZZA !LUV

All is fine. Don't put it on the to do list, if you don't feel like it or have no time. I honestly put the story in here because I thought it fitted the theme, in a way ;-)

I have just read it and added a comment. Really enjoyed it. The visuals were intense and drew me into the sea of closing swirling bodies. !PIZZA
