A spectacular place with many good memories: Tapia de Casariego (ENG-ESP)

Hola,

Hi,

During my recent Christmas holidays, one of the activities I have done has been to make small trips to places that in one way or another have marked my way of being and thinking.

One of the places I have visited is the town of Tapia de Casariego (Asturias-Spain). Tapia de Casariego is a small village located on the Cantabrian coast and, like all the small villages of this marvellous coastline, it has beautiful beaches, steep cliffs and a charming fishing port.

As I had mentioned, my little trips this Christmas were focused on visiting places that had left their mark on me. One of these marks in my memory is that I studied here for four years at the Marque de Casariego secondary school.

This small secondary school is located in the heart of Tapia de Casariego, in front of the town hall square, where a large sculpture of Fernando Fernández Casariego presides over the square. He was a nobleman at the end of the 19th century who gave his name to the town and later to the secondary school.

San Esteban Church

On the right side of the school is the parish church of San Esteban, which on occasion was also used as a classroom for religion classes during my years at the school.

As a curiosity, a large stone statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is placed on the top of the church, which can be seen from different points away from the church because it is one of the largest buildings and because the church is located in the highest area and at the same time the furthest away from the port area.

Aguileiro Beach

After visiting the school and the church, the next place I went to in Tapia de Casariego was Aguileiro beach. This beach is one of the largest beaches in Tapia and during the spring months we had our physical education classes there, consisting of running and also playing beach volleyball. However, because it is a sandy beach with very shallow water at high tide, the sea literally engulfs the beach as you can see in the following pictures.

Surfing tradition in Tapia

Surfing has been one of the most popular sports on this Aguileiro beach for several decades. In fact, during my visit, a group of teenagers equipped with their wetsuits and boards entered the sea through one of the accesses that lead to the rocks on the side of the beach and, without hesitation, they went into the sea to do their pirouettes on their boards, riding the waves.

An Australian surfer's great love story for Tapia

I am proud to tell you that for the last 30 years an international surfing competition has been held on the Aguileiro beach in honour of the Australian surfer Peter Gulley who, together with his brother Robert, introduced surfing to Tapia 50 years ago.

Peter Gulley Open

According to information on various websites, the introduction of surfing in Spain began in the years when these Australian brothers began to visit the town almost every summer. Peter Gulley's relationship with the town of Tapia was so strong that when he passed away in 1991, his ashes were thrown on the Aguileiro beach in accordance with a wish he had previously made to his brother.

Today, the entire coastline of the town's beaches is connected by a promenade named after Peter and Robert Gulley and a monument has been placed in the middle of the promenade in honour of the much admired Peter.

Paseo Maritimo Peter y Robert Gulley

Peter and Robert Gulley promenade

Then, after watching the teenagers surfing, I made my way back to the port of Tapia along the promenade and along the way I came across several beautiful places, many of which did not exist when I was a student.

The first place where I stopped to take some photos and which is a place I didn't know is a small viewpoint that has been built near the Aguileiro beach that gives direct views of another small beach called Playa del Murallón.

Murallon Beach

On this beach of the murallón, as the sea did not cover all the sand, I decided to go to the shore and leave the HIVE mark on the sand in case someone curious saw the name and did a search to find our beloved blockchain.

For those of you who are enjoying this area of Tapia de Casariego, I would like to point out that this town has numerous tourist flats for weekly rentals. Some of them are right behind the Murallón viewpoint and from the outside they look impeccable.

Sundial

Continuing my walk along the promenade, I came across a sundial. This kind of clocks have always caught my attention when I have come across them because of their simplicity and complexity. At first glance we see a series of marks that correspond to the hours and the shadow of a mast that marks the exact solar time. However, it is crucial that the orientation of that mast is correct with respect to the south pole and its inclination is dependent on the latitude at which we find ourselves.

Additionally, from the location of this sundial the Murallon beach looked stunning.

A house in the shape of a ship

Continuing along the path I had marked out for myself with the aim of reaching special places that I will soon tell you about, I came across a spectacular house overlooking the sea in the shape of a merchant ship that struck me and that I would like to know who the owner of the most peculiar house in the whole of Tapia and part of western Asturias is.

Ribeira viewpoint

The next place where I stopped during my walk was the Ribeira viewpoint. This small viewpoint gives access to the beach of Ribeira and from it you can contemplate the entrance of the sea in the beaches previously mentioned, you can see the beach of Ribeira, also some sculptures in the shape of surfboards due to the great surfing tradition of this locality and some beautiful rocks next to the cliff where the sea was breaking with force.

A seawater pool

A few metres from this viewpoint, I came across an unusual construction that I had never seen before in Tapia de Casariego. It is a seawater pool that used to be accessed by a path along the cliff and was only protected by the large rocks.

Nowadays, they have made a reform to improve the access so that it is not dangerous. At the same time, they have further protected the pool with a concrete wall and I imagine that it is an ideal place for young children to learn to swim in the summer months.

At the same time, as you can see, it is a perfect place to take pictures of reflections on the water.

My first kiss of love

Continuing with the memories of the past, the next place I visited on the promenade was the viewpoint of the canyon. I have a great memory of this place as it is where I had my first kiss of love during my adolescence on a warm summer night.

This place presents a cannon as a symbol of the defence of the town during the attempts of foreign incursions in the 18th century and in turn it represents two of the lighthouses of access to the port of Tapia.

In addition, a large anchor that is part of Tapia's heritage is on display at this viewpoint, as it belonged to one of the large ships that defended the port of Tapia and its surroundings during the 18th century.

However, the most beautiful thing about the place, apart from the memories I have of my youth, is being able to enjoy the views of the Cantabrian Sea from this viewpoint, the large lighthouse at the entrance to the port and the fishing port with its many houses hanging from the cliffs near the port.

Port of Tapia de Casariego

Afterwards, I continued on my way to the fishing port, but due to the beauty of the port and its houses I had to stop every few metres to contemplate the village and photograph it for all of you.

Sculpture of the drowning fisherman

Finally, once I arrived at the port I came across a touching sculpture representing a fisherman rescuing another fisherman who is drowning, which is a tribute to all those sailors who have lost their lives doing the hard work of a fisherman that sustains so many families in Tapia.

Finally, with the promise to return soon to this place that brings me so many good memories and at the same time is a visual delight, I say goodbye to all of you.

Have a good week
