A Cycling Tour of Paramaribo, Suriname ๐Ÿšด Clevia to Welgelegen ๐Ÿ™๏ธ

Greetings Hivers, I finally cycled across the breadth of Paramaribo and captured it all with my new GoPro handlebar mount.

Cycling around a city is always a good way to see the local people and surrounding, and although cycling in Paramaribo is not very convenient or common, it's still a good way to take in the sights and sounds. On this trip I cycled from our apartment in Clevia to a friend's house in Welgelegen, a journey just under 20 kilometers.

Note that we're in the midst of a Code Purple Lockdown here, so traffic is actually much more congested that it would normally be during a weekday like this. There are less than a million people in the whole country of Suriname, and Paramaribo is easily much smaller than just about any favela in Latin America.

The lack of a sizeable population and many vacant homes and businesses gives the city a very rural feel, and I think you'll notice that in the video. The signs of the economic crisis/depression are very evident in this video, but somehow the majority of this country have still managed to avoid downgrading to mainly bicycle and motorbike transport like you'd see in many Southeast Asian or African countries.

That's quite a ride. Looks a tad dangerous but I guess you're used to it by now.

It is exhausting and never gets any easier. I just tune everything out and put in my earbuds, but I do miss all the random conversation with strangers I used to have while cycling in Cambodia.

It's just a completely different world here, and there are days where I cycle 30 miles or more downtown and see less than 50 other cyclists. It also feels safer in Cambodia when cycling because you are usually part of a swarm of other cyclists numbering 20 to 100, so cars tend to respect the flock. !ENGAGE 10

Woo-Hoo! I am truly honored. I don't think I'll make a video this long ever again becuase the amount of attempted uploads are nearly uncountable. !ENGAGE 10

0:00:58 seems like you need to tie down the brake cable
1:04:23 scares the crap out of my pee hole

I skipped most of the middle part of the video. But I do realized one thing, why is there so many uphill? It feels like most part of the video you're pedaling hard. Or was it the type of off road wide profile tire.

On another unrelated note, I would like to sit for this type of video a little longer when, the camera is mounted on the chassis rather than the handlebar. Handlebar video - lots of head spin and puke. Chassis video, you can even fast forward it, normal speed on highlights and make the video looks super cool(I know there's a term to describe fast forward video and slowmo at the highlights, but am too lazy to find one, but that's the wordy idea).

There are always some close calls here when cycling here. I think because Suriname is mostly cars, people don't watch out for bikes and motos like they do in Cambodia or other similar countries. It seems like I'm climbing because when I cycle I am always trying to push the pedals my hardest, and when editing the video I noticed it doesn't make for smooth footage.

I learned a lot on this trip, but my RAM and software cause video editing to be a long process, often small errors aren't noticed until after the file is saved, which took three hours in this case. I originally wanted to do a slo-mo, but when I sped this footage up it got even worse, so I figured I'd just upload in full and let people click around and jump through the video.

You're right about the handlebar mount, a good idea in theory but not as smooth as a motorcycle handlebar footage would be. I think bicycling is too wobbly, so I'm experimenting now with a mount behind the rear seat, footage is already much more engaging. I think if I capture smoother footage the editing technique you mentioned will look really good. !ENGAGE 70
