Can I get a job in your country?

For virtually my entire professional life, I've been a freelancer. In fact, I only have one month of post-university work experience in a registered institution, if you exclude NYSC.

Prior to finishing university, I worked in a bunch of places including logistics, and laptop repairs, and maintenance but none of it was in an official capacity, so I don't have the "papers" to back it.

For what it's worth, I consider myself competent enough to work in various capacities and I'm a fast learner, so I can adjust to new technology and whatnot.

In the last three months, I even shelved doing freelance writing jobs because the stress isn't equivalent to the amount of money I earn. So in essence, I've depended entirely on crypto earnings since then and it's going to be that way for as long as I'm in Nigeria.

No crypto documentation

The problem with the system is that there's little or no documentation with regard to crypto activities. In fact, other than when you're registering for a Central exchange, there's actually nothing else that requires any form of documentation.

This sort of makes it difficult for someone like me to switch to the "corporate world". Virtually all my qualifications and proof of talent/work are based on trust; You have to trust that the links and copies of the word document I send as my applications are real.

For what it's worth, the results haven't been too bad. When I still did freelance work on Fiverr, I use to pitch some clients with my other jobs and they liked it enough to use my service.

Outside Fiverr though, job recruiters haven't entirely been too open to the idea of taking me on. Locally, I'm glad I didn't get employed because it enabled me to explore other opportunities and I'm pleased to say that I earn far more than I'd have made from a salary in Nigeria.

The problem

So the problem is that I'm starting to search for job opportunities in other countries because that's a nice way to migrate. It's a completely new position to be in and despite all the experience and quality I have, I often feel disadvantaged because of my lack of official documentation.

I know I should be buoyed by the fact that I've actually worked for clients in countries like Australia, USA, UK, Canada and many others but again, there's no paper work to prove it. I keep asking myself why someone should employ me and invite me to their country simply based on the fact that I told them I wrote an article.

Perhaps I shouldn't be too negative, but this feeling is just based on the number of times I've been rejected. It sort of makes me feel downcast whenever I think of getting employed.

Sadly though, for now at least, there's no way around it. My current source of income is global, so I and my family could afford the basics in some other countries but crypto has no documentation and I don't think it's something I can depend on, especially when I just get to a new country; thus the job.

Y'all got jobs?

Right now, I'm open to jobs that don't necessarily need qualifications. I and my wife are both open to working and between the two of us, there's the capacity to work in a variety of fields.

For me, it's about settling in, finding our feet, and then working our way up from there. It doesn't have to be white-collar or glamorous, just something to get by while we sort ourselves out. Are there jobs like that available in your country?

Well, I do relate to your story. The closest I have gotten to a proper job is my current internship (as a content creator) which ends in a couple of weeks. My only solace now is that my partner, @blezyn , works in a corporate setting (as an underwriter). So we are the perfect blend of both worlds. We also plan to migrate and thus searching for opportunities abroad.

I am seeking a different career path as a programmer, which I believe will allow me to work abroad, plus I love tech.

Nice. You got a lot of stuff going on and with those skills, you're going to be in demand. Were you learning online or offline?

Mainly online. I got some beginners courses online and a paid one on udemy but I will do something more serious next year in computer science. I need the degree as well

Starting all over from BSC scratch or just doing some courses?

Basics. I want to understand the theory as well as the practical aspect of programming mainly because I am more interested in backend stuff.

You guys seem to be in the same "get out of Nigeria" club. One of the things people in similar situations did was to apply to university in Germany. Another was a seasonal worker. I know some places in the countryside here do hire foriegn workers but it is tough.

To be honest it can get really shitty here. The only average people like us have is that we are out of the system. Plus we earn international. But that doesn't make us totally immune to the system

One of the things people in similar situations did was to apply to university in Germany.

I have an uncle in Germany but we are not in close contact. Plus, I am not sure I want to live in Germany.

Lol hook us up!

I will look around and let you know what I find. There is a large Nigerian community here but I don't think that's the way to go. I will send you a PM tomorrow.

I would start here in Linked in:

https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/jobs-in-korea?position=1&pageNum=0

Also do some research.

https://www.internations.org/go/moving-to-south-korea/working

I don't have a direct connection to someone hiring now but I will let you know if I do. Also feel free to ask any question.

There are also plenty of head hunters:

https://www.glassdoor.com/Job/south-korea-foreigners-jobs

This is also a facebook page for factory jobs in South Korea

I also took this weekend off to rest. Feel free to ask about language and or double check a company for history... Some are worse than others.

If you don't might hard labor, you should always be able to get a job in a storage unit or something similar.

You also need to check the crypro tax for the country you want to move to, to see if you earn enough.

If you earn enough via crypto you could employ yourself :p

lol I've thought about that but crypto is too seasonal. I want to have the option of going back and forward whenever I want to. Right now, I could probably survive on crypto in many countries but you know, nothing is certain and plan B is important.

Look into investing or opening a business to gain residency. Up until last month you could have just put 5k into a bank account in Panama, and you could have residency. In Ecuador you just have to buy a house or land for 40k. In the USA all you need to do is have a house/asset worth 1m+ to get a E2 visa to stay permanently. If I were you I would not spend 20k on residency in Canada right now, I would spend 20k on Bitcoin. Stack Bitcoin and chill. Half a Bitcoin will get you in any country with the red carpet laid out in 8 years.

Sounds like a solid plan tbh. I just don't want to spend 8 more years in Nigeria. I feel like that's quite a lot of time to spend just hiding my head and surviving. Plus, I'll still stack Bitcoin regardless of the situation because Bitcoin is inevitable.

Are you from Nigeria?

That's the problem with freelancing. I do it too, due to the fact I'm still studying and thus can't really work full time. But it's really unstable and if you don't get any offers then, well, you're screwed.

I luckily got a big and well paying job for next few months, so I'm fine, but after that it might be hard...

Good luck with getting a good job! I hope you will be okay!

The way the digital era is eating up so many jobs, you probably won't need one. You can always try porn though, you'd probably do good, but delete this comment before your wife sees it :))

I totally understand what you are going through in my country, the situation is not very different, I even think that at this moment it is more dramatic than in Nigeria. But the opportunities with cryptocurrencies are expanding and it is only a matter of making an investment that guarantees stability. The future is here with cryptocurrencies so it is time to change our mindsets.

When I saw this..
It felt very familiar.
Everyone just needs to equip themselves with one skill or the other, mostly digital as it can be the bread bringer soon.
Most degrees in Nigerian Unis are getting totally useless.
