Is $250 per day actually enough?

avatar
(Edited)

So I was thinking out loud earlier and posted on a tweet that I honestly doubted was going to get any attention. It turned out to get more attention than I intended and in the process gave me some clarity about life.

For what it's worth, I'm firmly focused on migrating to another country that is preferably outside Africa. Europe is my preferred destination but if that doesn't work out, I'd be glad to relocate to somewhere like Canada with my wife and kids.

Since one of my short-term goals is emigration, I have been asking questions about different countries and deciphering the potential that might exist in different parts of the world.]

This my inquest about the type of life and cost of living in different parts of the world led me to post a specific question about a specific amount of daily earnings.

image.png

The question is if you earned $250 per day, would that be enough to lead a normal life in your locality?

Well, according to my replies, it is possible to lead a normal life in virtually every part of the world with that amount.

Culling from the replies, I can say that for people in Nigeria and Africa as a whole, that amount will be enough. According to @jaraumoses, this amount will be more than enough in Uganda. He offered an interesting view when he said the following with an image attached through a tweet;

Did you say $250 a day? That is way beyond the average monthly salary here and people raise families on that already hehe.
image.png

Outside Africa, it turns out that $250 per day could also provide a sustainable value of life in other parts of the world. In Asia, Tokyo to be specific, $250 per day might put you on a favourable end of the earner's spectrum. In fact, for people like @selfhelp4trolls in Japan, this might even be a dream come true as the user had this to say in a Tweet;

In Tokyo that is a bit above average. More than enough to live comfortably If I could make that being self employed it’d be a dream come true. If i had to work full time with all the overtime hours nah. I wanna build stuff.

Outside Asia and Africa

In other parts of the world, it is more of the same, with different people identifying how living on that amount per day will be enough to survive in their country. Amongst the numerous replies, I also got one from @taskmaster4450 stating that;

Yes it is although a small family.
It will not be the Waltons.

Basically saying that $250 per day is good enough to raise a family in America, presumably where he resides but you shouldn't expect to lead a fancy lifestyle like the Waltons.

In Europe, it is pretty much the same thing, with user @markkujantunen stating that;

That's €6,225 per month. Yes, you can comfortably raise a small family in Finland. A couple each earning $125 a day can do it even better because of progressive taxation. I don't think there are many locations in the world where you couldn't raise a family with that.

This view once again points at the fact that perhaps making this amount per day is enough to do better than survive in virtually any part of the world.

Is it possible?

Well, considering what we've seen around Hive blockchain, I like to think this is quite possible for an efficient content creator and Hive user.

If you put everything into a melting pot and squeeze out all the value from liquidity mining on Cubfinance, post rewards on all Hive front ends, and curation benefits, it is very possible to earn $250 per day.

So does this mean that it is safe to say that daily earnings on Hive can sustain life in any part of the world or am I reaching?

I think $250 per day is more than sufficient in most parts of the world, even in the first world countries. Luxury is subjective. For me, it's not living in fancy hotels but going out to a picnic with my family by the lake where we can barbecue with a full setup. And with that money, you can still enjoy a more luxurious lifestyle once or twice a year. Please consider that you will see growth in your job/business & investments with time. So it's a great starting point!

Btw go to Thailand man. Close your eyes and put your finger on its map (coastline, please). Go to that island & I assure you that you will live a pretty cool life by the beach. :D

I like this idea. I really just want to lead a normal and quiet like somewhere in the world.
If I could get my earnings up to $250 per day, I'll make a decision and Thailand is definitely going to be in my plans

You could have a GREAT LIFE in Portugal our AVERAGE salary is $1156... You would be considered super wealthy by our normal standards.
How the heck are you "squeezing" $250 a day? I'm considering going full time into crypto but the max I can make per day is around $20. I gave myself until the end of 2021 to make it or break it...

PS: Remember we're on a bull market, those $250 could turn into $80 a day very quickly

Yeah using bull market to guage isn't a good barometer. However, judging by responses, even with the adjustments, you'll be fine in most countries.

I'm not getting $250 per day, but I was just fantasizing, you know?

Ah ok, I also like to fantasise about having my crypto paying me enough to have a great life without having to work 😁
Someday that fantasy will become true

Lol I just need to earn that amouny for just 6 months and I probably would not need it again in the sense that I would have invested enough to be a mini-they-call-me-dan here in Nigeria. $250 a month is even decent for many households here in Nigeria.

Tokyo life is more expensive than many parts of the US, maybe not the bigger cities though. Entertainment here is crazy expensive (drinking and eating out, performances and events, sports and music etc.), while things like rent are slightly cheaper. Food at the market is similar but the 100 yen shops make most simple household items (from soap to cups to stationary) much cheaper than the US.

In America, health insurance and education just keep going up to the point where it's getting difficult to think about the future. I'm sure if you work online and live in a low population area it's easier, but visas are always annoying.

$250 a day is a lot anywhere I think....there may be a handful of countries where it's not, Scandanavia? Maybe? But even there I'm sure it's enough to live and eat and afford stuff you need.

The world is a big small place, I'm sure there are many places you'd like for different reasons. Japan isn't the easiest place to live, tiny houses... sometimes I think about moving to Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, Portugal or Spain.....but I really feel like myself in some parts of Tokyo and I feel my personally fits here, I'm an alien to them, but not a typical foreigner and not difficult for the local people to relate to. We will see in 2-4 years when we are thinking about possible making little people.

Time will tell but Tokyo really seems like a nice place, judging by your description.

I'm open to an adventure myself and my relocation is also heavily dependent on how crypto is perceived in the country.

$250 a day is $5k a month(assuming working 5 days a week/4 weeks a month). As a student that'd be awesome to make. I'd be able to pay off rent in 3 days and the rest is all extra for supplemental things.

$250 AUD per day works out to be $1,750 per week, or a yearly salary of $91,250 AUD - A number that is very close to Australia's average salary.

Just for some context, Australia's welfare payment (called the Job Seeker allowance), is $310 AUD per week.

You really don't want to slip through the net...

Interesting angle. Also interesting that $250 USD translates to roughly 322 AUD without transaction fee. 🤔

Earning that as Daly income should be enough to lead a normal life with a small family right? Nothing fancy though, just the normal stuff.

In St.Louis you can live well on 250$ a day, American Union Tradesman doing construction make @ and over 250$ a day, what they don't say is the American dream doesn't start balling unless you have two incomes pushing you close to the 6 figure mark. I make over your magic number, but when the economy tanks and Tyrants shut down the global economy I sink like a rock without a second house hold income. The American Midwest has a low cost of living and a decent pay scale in some cities. I am hoping to escape all this Centralized Predatory Madness with Hive!

For real? At $250 a week, you can cover mortgage for a small house with a small family?

depends where you are located but yeh, I reckon. You might have to have got the mortgage first of course which would mean having full time employment to pass all the checks and stuff....I dont know how easy it would be to get a mortgage here based on crypto income? probably not possible.... but often a mortgage will work out cheaper than rent here once youve actually got it.

If you're mindful with your spending and don't go big on the lifestyle inflation, I think you'd be able to sustain a small family pretty much anywhere. Still the number will always be personal as everyone has different needs and wants, but if you don't care about "my house/car/wahetever is bigger than yours" 250 will go a very long way!

It is, but I also understand it isn't always as easy to do. Marketing shoves all these ideas and fancy products in our faces and there's always the social pressure of keeping up with your peers. Thinking for yourself and figuring out what you REALLY need and what makes you happy or helps you forward helps a lot in that regard, or at least that's what I think.

It is enough for most countries for sure !

It depends also on the taxation as it could really hurt your finances in my country (France).

Are you close to this goal?

Upvoted! ;) I wish you really good luck on your journey. Agreed that $250 should be fairly enough to live comfortably anywhere in the world. Perhaps an advice: Insist that people should consider monthly fix costs when they tell you that $250 a day is enough in their place. In most cases people tend to forget (indirect) monthly costs of living like health insurance. People start to consider these costs when not talking about $250 a day, but $6k+ a month...

$250 is considerably huge here in the Philippines. In fact, some workers only make around $250 in a month, and they have to live through with such money.

$250/day
$1750/week
$7000/month
$91000/year This amount varies depending how you get to a year.
If you hustle and you set goals
you can do a lot with that amount
in the US. You have to be discipline.
I was going to say if you can earn that amount where cost of living
is lower, you should be a champs.
Hive can provide this amount if you are constant in your practice
and hope everything turns green for you.

In Canada, where I live, $250/day (5 days a week) Is $5000 per month. You are then going to be taxed and take home $3800 or so.

House for rent or mortgage (1400)
Utilities (400)
Car / insurance / gas (600)

That leaves $1400 / month for food and incidentals.

250 USD per day is a dream income for most of the people in my country. About 60% population survive on less than $ 2 per day in India.

In Venezuela it would be more than enough, but that would attract a lot of attention if you are not a politician or a businessman, since crime is horrible.

But in my country, with $250 a day you can live more than quietly, I live with $7 a day for 2 people and it is better than most, so with $250 is well above average.

I live in the US and here in Ohio you could easily raise a family on $250 day (in the rural areas). I live on less than $70 a month income because I live in a rural area and never started a family.

I can't help thinking that if I earned $250/day, I would not have to move anywhere. I live in South Texas where our cost of living is not as high as in other parts of the USA. My wife and I earn less than that. Yet, we are better off than many in our community. However, if we did earn $250/day, we would have more money to save for travel. But, even with respect to travel, there are plenty of motels that charge less than $100 a night. We could easily travel around the USA for weeks and have money left over.

No where specific but it shouldn't be too cold and too expensive. In Nigeria, we don't have the basic things like Electricity, internet and all that stuff, so I want to get myself to somewhere decent, quiet and economical to start life there with my wife.

250$ a day is more than enough in most SEA countries with Singapore maybe an exception. If I were making that much a day, I'd move to Eastern Europe, Greece or Italy(the cheaper part). The most important factor when choosing a country to relocate for me is the weather basically :D what's your determining factor to move other than the price?
