The big splash

When you've lived in the kind of world that I was thrust into, looking for opportunities to earn becomes second nature.

Nigerians are born into a disadvantage from the beginning because we have a system intentionally set up to keep us down.

Despite this obviously mitigating circumstance that inhibits growth, you'll often find millions of Nigerians doing the most to get ahead, and succeeding as well.

Just like opulence, I've always thought of poverty as a tool used by the political class. A lot of time, it feels like there's this barricade separating the rich from the poor and part of the politician's job is to ensure the barricade stays.

That's why politicians often fight against some no brainier solutions to fixing poverty. It is also important for the silly hierarchical system that's based on whatever silly metric that they use to measure it.

In Nigeria, where corruption is the order of the day, the only thing that matters is the loudness of your money. It is not about being rich, it is about making a big splash, forgive my digression.

Despite this need for the loudness of money, poverty is still the order of the day.

Now like I pointed out, this poverty is a tool but on the flip side, it is also a motivational factor that drives hunger.

Let me put it this way, the fear of being poor, especially because you were born into it, motivates people to get out of it.

The unfortunate thing is that a healthy chunk of internally generated funds is through some illegal means. This doesn't mean we're all criminals here, it just shows a moral decadence in the system.

Is there a quick fix somewhere on the horizon? I think not. The prevalent poverty is intentional and somewhat institutionalized across different strata.

In your family, school, church or just immediate environment, there are people doing the most to make the big splash and then return to obscurity. This big splash of money could be from ill-gotten wealth but in a place where there almost no laws preventing them, they can get away with it and even dial up the self praises.

This need to make a big splash is something that I don't quite understand. In a place where money and basic amenities is so scarce, the idea of making a big splash doesn't sit well with me. Then again, it doesn't sit well with me completely because of my low key nature.

However, I think the reason why people feel the need to make that big splash is embedded in the prevalent poverty I spoke of.

After spending a large portion of their lives in sadnesses and omnipresent poverty, touching a little money could be intoxicating. Never mind the wastage; encouraged by family and immediate society, this is their moment under the sun and it may never come again in this lifetime.

That's the thinking process that goes against the business mindset that focuses on steady growth and reinvesting any spare. It's something that has kept us down for a long time around here and if you buck the trend, you'll find yourself ostracized or called "stingy" for not showing out.

That's the societal pressure I was talking about. However, I hope more people will see the light and grow out of it.

This is not only in Nigeria my dear, but in Africa in general. I have visited Africa, specifically Egypt.
And many villages about African wealth and treasures.
But learn the bright side that "need generates innovation" and this is what will happen in the future. Citizens will rise by themselves.

I honestly hope so. I hope we can cancel some culturally instituted wastage

sound almost the same in my country. as the corruption is the biggest enemy for all of the people. NAd yes, getting a big splash of money in no time, is also looking cool, as you can get rich just in a flick of fingers. Forget about the law, as it is also a means for corruption.

Find a way to move out of the country as soon as possible. Nobody should accept such government that works against its people by all means. If it wasn't for crypto I would have been out of the country again.

I'm working my ass to get enough to relocate to Ghana. It's crypto friendly and inexpensive.
Would have liked Europe but customs will give me issues about finances to survive

Sadly what you detail is the same in most countries. Few, if any, governments, are working for their populations. Poverty is a weapon for politicians. They politicize everything for their own personal gain. No matter what the party, what the country, they are all the same. It is only a matter of who they are in bed with.

Freedom no longer exists with governments and bankers. We need to take that back and that is where crypto comes in.

That's why they really hate crypto. Even the so called crypto friendly countries would rather delete crypto all together, if it were possible.

Crypto have the voiceless a voice and now we have our own space, free from their manipulations and whatnot.

To them, it is all about control and keeping people in check

Governments, both politicians and bureaucrats, are all about control. So anything that attacks that is likely to be met with resistance.

That is why we are not asking permission. We simply need to take the power back. That is vital in this process.

People who want to run to the government for regulation are turncoats. We simply need to take what we want like pirates.

Governments are the status quo. We are the ones changing the game.

I feel like we'll have to find a way to beat them at their own game to win this battle.

We might need turncoat infiltrators to work things out on their turf, while we do our work on chain.

people who were born into money know how to act when they make more but the revise is the case with does who aren't. Like you mention poverty is a tool used to keep people in line and also is the big-splash mentality that drives most black communities.
The idea is counter-intuitive and no real wealth can be sustained this way.
