Growing not Mowing

I am sure this isn't exclusive to state parks in Michigan, but in the recent years they have picked up the motto "Growing not Mowing". Basically, they have decided that certain areas of the parks they are going to allow to grow wild. They usually have some kind of fence or barrier setup and a sign with that motto on it.

Even landowners have started to adopt this saying as well. My parents have a small piece of land behind their main lot that we used to play in as kids. Now that we are long moved out, it is just more work than necessary for them to keep it up, so he has adopted that motto as well.

Some of you might get where I am going with this, but if you don't, I think there can be a lot of parallels between your account(s) on Hive and this practice that many state parks have adopted.

Hive was actually the first thing that I thought of this past weekend when I was at a state park along the shores of Lake Huron in Michigan. Being along the lakeshore, the erosion can be pretty significant. Usually it happens more on the west side of the state due to the gulf stream and all of that meteorological science stuff.

As you can see from the picture above, specific areas have been cordoned off and allowed to return to the wild. By keeping individuals off these sandy dune-like areas, it allows the grass to take root and sort of cement the soil in place.

All too often, I think people see Hive as more of a faucet and less of the thriving ecosystem that it could be. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying taking profits is a bad thing. We all have to do it at some point. I just think it is a bit short sighted to continually power down and cash out.

I think we need to adopt a conservation mentality. These land areas that they allow to grow wild draws in a large number of insects, plants, and wildlife. In a time when the bee population is struggling, and species are disappearing from the planet, it is important to do what we can to keep them around.

The same is true of Hive. Again, I'm not saying don't take profits, but at 50/50 rewards why not leave that 50% that automatically gets powered up and just take the other 50% as profits. Is 50% of what you are making per post really worth waiting the 13 weeks for it to power down?

I really think you are shooting yourself in the foot if you are not allowing your account to experience the growth it deserves. Even small increases in your account add up over time. Just like year after year of not mowing draws in more and more wildlife.

I think a lot of us simply think of our Hive accounts as a tool or a means to an end. I know I used to feel that way. We need to shift our thinking and realize that our accounts are more alive than we realized. They aren't simply inanimate digital storage for words and pictures. They are living breathing outlets for our creativity, wealth, and curiosity.

Growing, not mowing... That's the key!

Also here in Belgium there is a no mow movement. In the month of May specifically.
This would give nature the chance to grow, which is great for the bees among others.

Still have to mow my backyard for the first time this year. The weed is getting too high :)

Good luck with that! I have mowed my lawn about six times now this year. We have woods just beyond our chain link fence and I usually let that grow a little bit. That is cool they are committing to letting things grow wild. We certainly need more honey bees!

Many state road and highway systems also adopted a plan where they would only mow once or twice a year. The reason was that it would hide all the trash that was thrown out of cars and they could save money by not mowing and not picking up litter. Also might apply here.

In most cases this is the DNR, so I don't think that is the case here. We actually have the adopt a highway program where companies and community organizations "adopt" a section of highway and do their part to keep the litter to a minimum. Michigan already has a fair number of car/deer accidents on the expressways. I can only imagine how high it would be if they let the grass on each side grow wild!

Cool analogy here. I think that in many areas of life we need to adopt this mentality. It doesn’t make sense to constantly mow and cut when you see an inch above what you cut it last time. Same thing with crypto, other assets. You have to let them mature a bit before you take from them otherwise you are selling it short.

For sure this definitely encompasses many aspects! Great point!

Terrific analogy. It is true, the idea of "mowing" all your hive down does not make a lot of sense. But then those are the same people who will likely be complaining in a year or two at how the larger accounts ignore them.

Daily activity and powering up/staking really helps. I think it is an ideal system to develop long term wealth.

Before I started doing more on Leo I set a goal of 5000 LP by the end of the year. I immediately realized that might have been a little too aggressive. Now that I have been taking the time to engage and powering up all of my earned Leo, I think I will probably hit that goal easily. It is amazing how investing in your account makes such a huge difference!

Its the reason why I leave my author rewards as half HP and half HBD. At least this way my HP grows over time and the rest can go towards either games or other passive income tokens.

I think that is a really smart way to to do it. If you do things that way you shouldn't need to worry about powering down.

(Edited)

You are right on point. I set a goal of having my LEO account at 10,000 staked this month and that is where it is now. I did the same with my overall HIVE stake.

So now I am a HIVE dolphin and I guess I am somewhere between a dolphin and orca on LEO? I can now give good upvotes even though prices are down. By staking I have shown that I believe in HIVE and LEO.

I understand those that have very small incomes and their HIVE rewards supplement their living expenses. I do not begrudge them for taking profits. Yet, building one's account is paramount to earning even more in the HIVE ecosystem. It takes money to make money. That is just how things work.

Congrats on the power ups. That is awesome! I agree with you, some people do need to supplement their expenses but you can do that while still powering up.

Nice LEO growth.

I am at 5000 in the soonverse. lols.

I'm liking how fast my HIVE is currently growing. I was once told that once I surpassed 10,000 HP the growth would be "palpable" and it is. I used to wonder how long it would take me to grow to 500HP and now I easily gain about 100 per month (when I work my account).

Well said! It's sad that a lot of people don't really see things like that... they are missing on a really great opportunity and will probably regret it in a few years

I agree, I think they are really putting themselves at a disadvantage for a small short term gain.

There are projects in the UK to let road verges grow instead of just mowing them all. It provides a good sanctuary for wildlife. We leave some areas in our garden fairly wild for the same reason.

We do need a thriving ecosystem on Hive too and that's what I was getting at with my last post. There needs to be posts and communities that people enjoy and not just a concentration on maximum profit. The developers give us the framework, but it is down to us users to make it welcoming to newbies. When people do sign up we need to help them out. We should also be leaving on comments on posts. That can count for a lot even if your vote is small.

I really like how Leo has put a strong focus on engagement. There are some larger accounts over here that pretty much only vote on comments. If not exclusively, they put a large portion of their manual curation into comment voting, not post voting.

I vote up comments on my own posts to encourage it. Just have to watch for those just fishing for votes. Had one today who was copying comments by others and editing them a bit. I noticed as they quoted my own words back at me! I checked their posts and some was total plagiarism. They have been warned.

That is too bad. I always kind of hate when a comment just regurgitates what my original post was. If you are asking a question cool, but if you are just trying to make it look less spammy... lame.

That sucks!

I upvote people who comment on my posts too, that was my first HIVE goal, to have enough upvote power so my upvote wouldn't be "dust."

I have been seeing lots of introduction posts through the listnerds channel.

Have been visiting some accounts and giving them some follows.

I think it is great that we all help grow new accounts, but sometimes I feel like simply going out and supporting all of us who are "still here."

I think for most people they need to make Hive fun as they may not make much or be able to give big votes. I like getting decent comments and not just people fishing for votes. Being sincere is the best policy.

Living near the shore, I too see a ton of replenishment projects and also those geared toward slowing erosion. Dune grass can take the salt air and thrives in the sandy, dry, windy environment.

All too often, I think people see Hive as more of a faucet and less of the thriving ecosystem that it could be.

True! I have since day one been at 50%. Then I power up or invest in another branch of Hive. I think that if one continually powers down and essentially leaches the system everyday, then they either have no clue about how investments work (or not allowing the investment to work for them in it's full capacity) or they don't have any long term faith in the system. I have faith and like to imagine that the potential and risk are worth it. All it takes is a little faith. 😁

I agree with you. It would take an insanely high price for me to ever consider powering down any of my stake. Like $50 per Hive might get me close, but even then I would likely be making so much weekly in curation that it would be silly to even touch it!

Hope you all have an awesome weekend!

Nice analogy.

Here in San Diego we do "No Mow May" but ... well, I changed my mind about participating because I am having a party tomorrow and I didn't mow for some of april so it was looking nuts over here.
